セカンドライフは既に禁句なのか　その2

2008年4月初のVirtual Worlds Conference2008で唯一セカンドライフが脚光を浴びたのは、なんとあの米国を代表する伝統企業ＩＢＭとのコラボレーションでした。
「セカンドライフ・グリッド」と言う動きですが、一部のマスコミは3Ｄ世界のオープン化、標準化への具体的な動きとして注目しています。果たして「セカンドライフ・グリッド」はセカンドライフの救世主になるのでしょうか。

　「セカンドライフ・グリッド」の直接的なポイントは、セカンドライフがいよいよサーバーの第三者への開放に踏み切ったと言う点でしょう。その結果、各企業はＩＢＭなどからサーバーを仕入れて、十分なセキュリティを確保した「自社のセカンドライフ類似環境」を自由に持てるようになったと言う点です。でも重要な点はそれだけではありません。

　セカンドライフ側からの視点ですが、ＩＢＭとの共同事業ですね。今回のVW08でセカンドライフが唯一スポンサーしたのがこのプロジェクトでした。伝統企業などがセカンドライフで現実世界のビジネスをする場合、「安全な閉じた世界が必要」と言うわけですね。


ファイアーウオールの中にあるＩＢＭの自社開発仮想社会プラットフォームがセカンドライフに繋がることになります。

The Second Life Grid is a platform that enables organizations to create a public or private virtual environment using Linden Lab’s 3-D online virtual world technology. This marks the first time a portion of the Second Life Grid will be deployed behind a corporate firewall, with the goal of creating a solution that businesses can quickly deploy to get work done in a new way.
IBM plans to pilot a solution internally which, at that time, will be designed to allow IBM employees to explore the Second Life mainland and seamlessly cross over into IBM’s custom-built world behind the firewall without having to log on and off. This is similar to using the same browser to access corporate intranet pages as well as non-secure Internet sites. The goal is to allow IBM employees to access public spaces and private spaces within one Second Life client interface while privatizing and securing portions of the Second Life Grid behind IBM’s firewall.

★ 「セカンドライフ・グリッド」の特徴は何か

1）　インターネットの中の閉じた世界の必要性
　皆さんは「イントラバース」「エクストラバース」と言う用語をご存知でしょうか。

　−「イントラバース」はイントラネットに相当する。つまり企業内の遠隔地会議用、ＳＮＳ用などの仕組みです。

　−「エクストラバース」はエクストラネットに相当する。つまり企業の代理店やサプライヤーなどとの交流の仕組みです。


　　
　また消費財企業などがイベントを顧客向けに行ったり、生産財企業がユーザー会を仮想社会で行う場合にも高いセキュリティ、閉じた世界を必要とする場合があります。
　


　現にセカンドライフで実験を行っていた米国銀行のウエルスファーゴやオランダのＡＢＮアムロ銀行は、セカンドライフのセキュリティが不十分な為、「閉じたミーティングに不向き」として、別の仮想社会サービスであるアクティブ・ワールドのプラットフォームを自社用に導入して、閉じた仮想社会サービスを自社行員と顧客のために立ち上げました。しかしこの方式だとセカンドライフと企業の独自仮想社会サービスとは全く切り離されてしまいます。



　ＩＢＭとリンデンラボとの共同事業はそれへの反撃の第一弾と言う訳です。


顧客企業はサーバーを自社で調達して、ＩＢＭなどからセカンドライフに接続可能な独自プラットフォーム用システムを導入して活用すれば良い。またそこからアバター姿でファイアーウオールを越えて、何時でもセカンドライフに入っていけると言う訳ですね。

This time the World which Must not Be Named was presented, by Ginsu Yoon, so Second Life was mentioned here. No big surprises here. Virtual Worlds can be used to help homeworkers to stay in the loop, to have meetings with dispersed employees or for outsourced projects, to prepare meetings, for training etc. And yes, the technology is not yet completely there to make everything possible inworld what could be done in 2-D. It would be nice if one could implement semantic bookmarks to search archived meetings, to give but one example.

　セカンドライフグリッドは、一つには社内の仮想チームやＳＯＨＯなどの社員のために使われます。


★ 3Ｄのオープン化、標準化の元型へと発展するのか

　さてセカンドライフ3Ｄ時代が到来した時、生き残れる可能性があるとすれば、「3Ｄのオープン化、標準化」に極めて熱心であると言う点でしょう。今回、クライアントビューアだけでなくサーバーをＩＢＭのようなサードパーティに開放しました。更にＩＢＭが開発した独自の仮想社会サービスとセカンドライフをシームレスに繋いだ点です。


ウエルスファーゴ銀行などは、セカンドライフのセキュリティの問題にぶつかり、顧客コミュニティと行員の為に独自に仮想社会サービスを立ち上げました。オランダのアムロ銀行も同じです。


でもセカンドライフ・グリッドを活用すれば、自社の立ち上げる安全なファイアーウオール内の独自仮想社会サービス（セカンドライフとは異なるプラットフォーム）とセカンドライフを接続できます。これは大きな進歩です。



明らかにこの動きはリンデンラボとＩＢＭが主導権をとり、既にグーグルやソニー、オランダのフィリップスなど20社を巻き込んで進む仮想社会サービスにおけるアバターなどプラットフォームの標準化の動きを加速するものです。その中でリンデンラボがその主導権が取れるかどうかにセカンドライフの将来はかかっています。
