UNT wins Best School Award in national design competition

DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Communication design students from the University of North Texas College of Visual Arts and Design earned scholarships and cash awards totaling $19,775 at two conferences in March and April including the Best School Award this weekend at the Dallas Society of Visual Communicators 4th Annual National Student Show and Conference.

The $1,000 award went to the university whose students exhibited the highest quality of overall work. Eighteen UNT students also won 23 individual awards and scholarships, competing against 2,200 entries from 52 colleges and universities in 28 states. Altogether, UNT students and the communication design program received $13,875 in awards and scholarships at the DSVC conference.

"UNT would not have won the Best School Award if it were not for the achievements of its students," said Eric Ligon, UNT communication design program coordinator and associate professor of visual arts. "The College of Visual Arts and Design is immensely proud of our students' hard work at both conferences, and we are glad that their dedication and hard work throughout the year have paid off." 

  • Barret Fry, junior from Plano, Dick Sloane Portfolio Prize, $3000, and Fossil Scholarship – Best Use of Imagery, $10,00
  • Ben Barry, 2007 graduate from Austin, won an all expense paid trip to the How Conference, approximately a $2,000 value
  • Mallory Grigg, junior from Allen, Fossil Scholarship – Best Use of Imagery, $1,000
  • Caroline Latawiec, senior from Houston, Clampitt Paper Scholarship for Best of Paper, $1,000
  • Ashaun Ervin, junior from Lewisville, DSVC College Tuition Scholarship, $1,000
  • Patrick Enstrom, senior from Rockwall, DSVC Jump-Start Scholarship, $2,000
  • Ryan Bailey, junior from Longview, $500 Coveted Memorial Ralph Award, $500.

Ben Barry, $250 Thomas Theal, junior from Houston, $250 Soyoka Yamamoto, junior from Tokyo, Japan, $250

Best of Category awards of $125 per award at the DSVC Conference: John Graziano, junior from Lewisville, Best Logo; Caroline Latawiec, Best Letterhead Packages; Christopher King, senior from Watauga, Best Magazine Covers/Spreads; Micah Wimberly, senior from Greenville, Best Annual Reports and Best Broadcast Advertising (two awards totaling $250); Barrett Fry, Best Print Advertising; Brittany Fleitman, senior from Houston, Best Broadcast Advertising; Michelle Carpenter, senior, Best Illustration; (Jay) Mikohl Minkler, senior from Kincaid, Kan., Best Broadcast Advertising; Sean Leonard, junior from Allen, Best Animation; Jason James, junior from Dallas, Best Animation; David Pappenhagen, 2007 graduate from Duncanville, Best Total Campaigns.

At the 23rd Annual Creative Summit, a student conference and design competition attended by students and professionals from across the country March 28 and 29 in San Marcos, UNT students from the Communication Design program were awarded a total of $5,900 in cash prizes.
