Olympic farce: Former Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq lashes out at 'robotic' Chinese torch minders

Former Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq has attacked the mysterious "robotic" Chinese army of Olympic torch minders who brought bully tactics to London.

She said the henchmen barked orders at her to stop and start and made her to hold the flame higher as she ran through the capital.

Britain has been accused of importing Chinese police state tactics by allowing the "goon squad" to barge their way through London with the Olympic torch during Sunday's relay.

'Robotic': Konnie Huq has lashed out at Olympic torch guard squad

A political row blew up after the security guards were seen shoving members of the public and even police officers out of the path of their prestigious flame.

There was a spectacular display of buck-passing as nobody could explain, let alone take responsibility for, the behaviour of the Chinese protection squad.

Wearing blue tracksuits, the 14 minders surrounded the flame at all times, pushing anyone who tried to get near, as it was relayed from one end of London to the other.

Miss Huq, one of the 80 torch-bearers at Sunday's chaotic event, said: "The men in blue perplexed everyone. Nobody actually seemed to know who they were officially or what their title was."

She told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "They were very robotic, very full on, and actually I noticed them having skirmishes with our own police and the Olympic authorities before our leg of the relay, which was confusing.

"They were barking orders at me, like 'Run! Stop!', and I was like, 'Oh my gosh, who are these people?'

"They kept pushing my hand up higher when I was holding the torch, so they were...interesting."

Miss Huq was nearly knocked to the ground when a Tibet protester tried to snatch the flame from her. It was one of dozens of ugly episodes in which thousands of human rights campaigners disrupted the procession through London, demonstrating against China's human rights abuses and the situation in Tibet.

Police fought running battles and made 37 arrests, progressively stepping up security until more than 50 police officers were forced to jog alongside the torchbearers - obscuring the flame to supporters lining the 31-mile route.

The relay - supposed to have been a showcase of British sport - was turned into a humiliating farce. Yet it was the role of the Chinese guards that caused consternation. Apparently there to 'protect' the torch, they seemed happy to get stuck in to scuffles.

Matt Whitticase, of the Free Tibet Campaign, demanded: "Who authorised them? They should have no jurisdiction whatsoever on the streets of Britain.

"It is a very creepy snapshot of Chinese security coming to London. The whole thing looked utterly oppressive and reminded people of what policing is like in China."

None of the British authorities wanted to take responsibility for the Chinese security guards.

A spokesman at the Greater London Authority, which co-organised the event, said: "We didn't bring them over here. They were brought over by the Beijing organising committee. They were the responsibility of Beijing."

He insisted it was the British Olympic Association (BOA) that was responsible for dealing with Beijing, but the BOA's spokesman said: "They were nothing to do with us. The relationship they had with the Met and the GLA was the responsibility of the GLA."

The Met said the Chinese guards had "no executive powers" in Britain and were simply there to protect the torch.

Asked about them, Met Commander Bob Broadhurst said: "We were protecting the torch and the torch attendants and what we saw were a large number of determined people making several determined attacks on the torch.

"We saw them attacked with fire extinguishers, we saw people grabbing the torch and trying to wrestle it away from people - those are crimes, we had to deal with that."

He denied claims that officers were heavy-handed.

He said: "We didn't misjudge it at all. We always anticipated there would be a large number of people on the streets.

"Our role was to ensure the safety of the torch. It got there safely and on time. We also said we would allow lawful demonstrations which we did."

But privately police were said to be furious at the way the event panned out. Officers were made to look ridiculous jogging along in cycle helmets and holding hands to form a chain around the running torch-bearers.

MPs said the fiasco, beamed around the world on TV, made Britain a laughing stock on the international stage.

Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell said: "I don't think it made us look bad at all. The police did the very best job that they could. The point that's important to accept is that Olympics are a global movement.

Tory leader David Cameron, speaking at his monthly news conference, said yesterday's events were "not an edifying spectacle" and that lessons should be learned.

The curse of the torch descended on the French as mayhem followed it across the Channel to Paris for the next leg of its worldwide "peace and harmony" tour.

Security officials extinguished the Olympic torch four times as chaotic protests against China's policies on human rights and Tibet turned the Paris relay into a jarring series of stops and starts.

In Britain, as the fallout from the chaos continued, Prime Minister Gordon Brown defended the actions of the police.

The torch relay has continued in Paris, where protesters forced police to extinguish the flame amid heavy demonstrations.

Officers in jogging gear who had been escorting the flame put it out and took it on a bus, apparently to get it away from the protesters.

The flame, which started out at the Eiffel Tower amid tight security, was being carried down a road next to the Seine amid demonstrators carrying Tibetan flags when the relay was stopped.
