NetHack

Press Release Embargoed until: 2008/04/01
From: Dungeons of Doom

The NetHack Development Team, in keeping with its decades-old policy of not announcing schedules, announces the upcoming

Web Integration Release

addressing the trend of moving applications from the desktop to the web and thus continuing our tradition of folding the latest, greatest, and unproven technological trends and buzzwords into NetHack.

We are pleased to announce the new nethack: protocol, allowing us to embed NetHack directly into your favorite browser. Initial availability will be as a plug-in for Mozilla Firefox. Check addons.mozilla.org for availability.

No more confusing command lines!  Just use easy to remember URLs such as these:

nethack:///new
Start a new game.
nethack:///new?pettype=cat
Start a new game with a cat for a pet.
nethack:///restore?player=HeroName
Restore an in-progress game.
nethack:///scores
Check the high score list.
nethack:///config
Enter the configuration editor! No more .nethackrc files.
nethack:///config?pettype=cat
Directly change the configuration.
nethack:///docs/index.html
Access online documentation.

No more cluttering up your hard drive with abandoned games. By saving games as cookies, the browser will simply expire any game not played recently. (Note: don't clear your browser cache if there are games in progress.)
And don't worry about leaving your game at home or work - just migrate it with our new Gmail integration feature!
And of course we have real time chat with other players through our r.g.r.n. chat system.
Here's a sample of what you will see:

Remember, the NetHack Development Team never discusses future releases, so please don't ask! Yes, we're working on it - that's all we'll say.
