YOUTH FLYWEIGHT

Chatchai is new WBC champion

EDWARD THANGARAJAH

Young Thai fighter Chatchai Sor Thanayong, who excelled as an amateur and in Muay Thai, is the new WBC Youth Flyweight champion.

The 21-year-old Chaiyaphum born fighter, bagged the vacant WBC title impressively, with a fourth round technical knockout win over Wan Jun Hui of China, yesterday, at the Wat Bungthonglang Boxing Arena.

Watched by a large crowd of fans, he launched an all out attack against his tall opponent from Kunming, China, smothered his long-arm defence and won all rounds until referee Noppharat Sricharoen stopped the contest in 2.53 of the fourth.

"He could not absorb the power punches the Thai threw, that's why I had to step in and save him from further humiliation. Twice his eyes went up and that was scary," said Noppharat after the fight.

All ringsiders agreed with the referee's decision.

Wang tried to attack Chatchai in the first round, but the Thai who counter-punched, was too fast for him.

Later Wang tried to use the full area of the ring, by running away from his opponent, but even that could not stop Chatchai. He moved fast and punched furiously.

The Chinese fighter took a mandatory count in the third round and in the fourth, after receiving a flurry of punches before the fight was stopped.

At the end of the contest, the WBC belt was presented to Chatchai, by the chairman of the fight, Mr.Dhanuporn Punnakant M.P.

On the under-card, world strawweight champion Oledong Sithsamerchai registered a fourth round technical knockout win over Indonesia's Serga John.

The Indonesian boxed bravely for three rounds but took a strong straight-left to his solar plexus in 1.30 of the fourth and couldn't continue.

Dennapa B.M.Service, who had boxed for a long time in Australia, suffered a similar fate against former, WBA super-featherweight champion, Yodsanan Sithyodthong and lost 38 seconds into the sixth round.

In the final bout of the day, a 110-pound round contest, Liampetch Sor Veeraphol registered a third round TKO over Weerayuth Tor Painboonchoke.
