Chartchai Sor Thanayong of Chaiyaphum will bid for the vacant WBC youth flyweight title which has been rendered vacant as champion Panomrunglek Krathingdaeng is vacating the honour because he is overage. He celebrated his 24th birthday on March 16 and plans to bid for the world flyweight crown. He is currently the second ranked contender for the world title.
Pongsaklek Wonjongkam, who bid for the world title 12 days ago in Tokyo, was held to a draw by the current champion, Naito Daisuke, in Tokyo.
At a meeting held at the Prince Palace Hotel yesterday, chairman of the fight Danuporn Punnakant announced that Chartchai will fight Wang Jun Hui of China for the vacant WBC youth title on March 28 on a card which starts at 3 p.m. The fight, along with four others, will be held in an open-air ring at the Wat Rungthonglang School premises in Lardprao.
Chartchai was a former well-known amateur fighter and his opponent Wang has better experience as a professional, having fought 14 times, won nine, lost three and was held to two draws.
Hence it should be an interesting contest, said the promoter of the fight Piyarat Vachiraratanawongse.
Mr Danuporn pointed out that more youth champions must be created in boxing-rich Thailand in order to build a strong base for future world champions.
