My 1972 Italvega Special (mid-range bike) weighs 26 1/2 pounds. I suspect it might be about mid-range for early 1970's road bikes.

1973 Fuji - "The Finest" - a shade under 23lbs.
1975 Fuji Professional: 21 lbs
1974 Raleigh International: 21 lbs without fenders or rack.
1971 Schwinn P13-9 Paramount Road Racer: 22 pounds
Which bike...? My lightest steel frame bike is about 18.5 pounds; an '82 Cellini (Columbus KL tubeset). Lightest bike is right around 17.5 pounds; a '78 Speedwell TitaLite (Ti frame).... But the daily rider is around 26# with the saddlebag (steel Colin Laing).
1988 Miyata 215ST - 27lbs
All these years I never knew, and this year alone I've done 7 centuries on it. Stupidest thing I've done in a long while was to bring it to the LBS last month and toss it on a scale .... :(
What a bunch of Nancy-boys; ain't gettin' no exercise pedaling those flyweights. :p
'68 Raleigh Grand Prix: 30 lbs. (includes steel fenders & dyno light set)
'83 Centurion LeMans 12 mixte: 30 lbs.
'76 Motobecane Grand Touring: 32 lbs. (fenders, rack, dyno lights)
'70 Raleigh Superbe: 40 lbs. (hey -- it's the All-Steel Bicycle, dammit)
That '40 Schwinn Spitfire I had last month was just about 50 lbs.; if I'd kept it, I would've had to move into a downstairs apartment.

Or lock it to your car bumper to keep your car from being towed or stolen! Wow. :p
My Bennett super sports 29lbs but dunno the year ?

I've never weighed my bikes... I'm afraid to. What is the preferred method?
I don't know,
My Reus is 19.5 (or was it 20.5?)
the RIH I'd estimate at about 22 lbs.
the Serotta about 21 with brooks saddle!
my trek is 22 lbs?
we're cranky & vintage, not weight weenies. maybe this should
be a road forum question!

I dunno about the preferred method, but probably the easiest is to get on the bathroom scales and weigh yourself, then pick up the bike by the top tube and check the weight again. Subtract your weight from your weight holding the bike. Eureka!
I was up at the TheCahill's today working on the schwinn and let one of his neighbors and fellow BF member (I'll let him chime in if he wishes) pick up the old gas pipe beast - the look on his face was priceless. I haven't weighed it - but by my estimate I'd guess it still on the high side of 30lbs.
my Trek is 28 lbs with the heavy gel padded seat

Digital fish scale is what many bike shops use.

I can't afford a digital scale fish so I've devised my own method, but it has a serious downside. I stand on our bathroom scale and weigh myself, then I pick up the bike and stand on the scale again and subtract my weight. The downside is, I find out how much I weigh and have to eat a bowl of ice cream to overcome the shock.

You have the same reaction my father does. Of course, you actually get some exersise to work off some of that icecream, and he's diabetic on top of it all.
I need to take my Schwinn by the shop to have the headset looked at, so I'll see if they can get an offical weight for it when I'm there. I'll report back with the offical weigh in.
Motobecane Mirage Sport = 206#
OOPS - that's me plus the bike!
26 lbs with Road Morph pump and plastic toe clips.
Does anybody think that's light for a bike made of 1020?
I've weighed it several times on sevral scales and that's it. It was 27.2# before I took the kickstand off...
My lighest vintage bicycle is a 1974 Scapin (Columbus, 58 cm) at 18.5 lb. However I have a modern Pinarello Prince that is even lighter.
That seems about right for the Mirage. Maybe 2 or 3 lbs. light, but who's counting?
'82 Romani frame (Columbus Zeta) and 531 fork with assorted Campagnolo and Shimano parts (including a mix-of-both mtb triple) and a Team Pro saddle: 11 kgs.

03 Fuji Marseill Steel with Flightdeck, saddlebag full and pedals and 2 cages@ 21.64 lbs. Not bad for steel.
I don't have a scale, but I do have a 1973 Schwinn Suburban. Dunno how much it weighs. Quite a lot. About the same as my 1996 Trek 800 mountain bike. There's a whole lotta steel in both of those bikes.
My Miyata 210, last time I weighed, at the end of the summer, was closing in on 32 pounds. That's with two racks, a kickstand, toe clips, a Topeak Road Morph pump and a water bottle cage. Stock (just the rear rack, no bottle cage, no pump, no kickstand), I would guestimate that it weighed around 27 lbs. I can't think of a way to drop ten pounds short of making it into a singlespeed, but I'm not complaining. It makes me stronger!
My other bike, a Sears Austrian three-speed comes in at least 40 lbs, so my Miyata is the nice "light" bike when I want to treat myself.
PAhhhh!! Nancy Boys indeed. My tricked out Raleigh Twenty Weighs 28,6 LBS. STEEEEELLL!! STEEL!!! EVER LASTING COMFY COLD, SMOOOOTH STEELLL I Tell YA!! I'll Drop you all!! 6000 Watts!!! ;)
Um,.. yes allright i'll take my chill pill now.
BTW, does a Raleigh Twenty qualify as 'Vintage'.... or.. are the Terms 'Shopper' and 'Vintage' mutually exclusive? :). Before i modded it the Tweny was 35,3 LBS ha ha ha, and that's for a Twenty inch bike!
Here's my two most
1971 Schwinn Continental: 42 lbs
Various '70s Raleigh Sports from my collection: 35-37 lbs
1984 Raleigh U.S.A. Competition 20 lbs, on-the-dot. (can't beat a 20 pounder for $40 bucks!)
Take care,
-Kurt
my italvega is just over 20lb"s. my gut is just over 5lb"s.

Speak for yourself - I'm a vintage weight weenie!
I put together a Favorio from Ellis Briggs of 531 EL, and 2nd gen super record, last summer. No other weight saving measures, and it is 19.2 lb. I think this may be the lightest steel bike I've ridden.
Patti's de Rosa is 19.5 with mostly SR, but it is a little EdBd bike...
The Pinarello Record that I've been messing with has almost all of the OMAS kit on it now, and weighs about 19.5 lb.
Vitus with mavic and Rovals - 18.4 lb
Trek 170 is about 20 lb with Kingsbury/Mavic Aero wheels...
I'd weigh the Team 753 Raleigh, but it seems to be all apart again.
My late 1970's Marinoni with 531 DB and Campy Nuvo Record components tilts the scal at 23lbs.
I used to have a 7 pound ride. It only had one wheel though. :p

My 1995 Trek 800 has not been changed since it rolled out of the LOB by it's original owner (not me). It weighs in at 30 lbs. It does not have a kickstand or light etc. Thought you might want to know.

Sweeeet! I reckon the Suburban weighs a little more than the Trek...maybe another 5-7 lbs-ish. I think that would be about right for an early 1970s electroforged Schwinn.
My 1983 Holdsworth Mistral weighs 13 lbs. - - - w/o seat, wheels, and chain.
I've been wondering though, how much does the bike size effect weight - both of my bikes are tall (62 cm c-to-c).
Cheers.

I have a '73 Schwinn Varsity and a '74 Schwinn Suburban. (Those are, by far, my two heaviest bikes.) I don't know exact weights, but I've heard/read those bikes are in the 35-42 pound range! They certainly feel like they weigh that much when you pick them up! (I think my MGB might weigh less!)
This '70 I sold this summer came in at 42 pounds. Sure wish I'd kept it.

I attached a fish scale to a joist in my workshop. I added a strap to the hook. It weighs things up to 50lbs. Works great. I also have a smaller digital scale that weighs (parts) in grams or ounces. But I'm not a weight weenie and readily recognize the best way to lighten the load is skip those heavy dinners.
1974 Zeus competition, all Zeus componets, sew ups, right at 21lbs. Wish I still had it.
1977 Motobecane Grand Touring, lugged steel, 25 pounds.
1978 Schwinn Paramount P10-9; 63cm. 25 lbs.
Suburban looks good in black. I guess the 10-speed didn't have the chainguard?
Mine's got a wider pieplate--'tis original and blingy. I envy your rear rack. I need one of those for my Schwinn!
82' Chris Pauley Tierra Frame with 70's Campy and Silica pump: 22 pounds

I love that Suburban - stunning, simply stunning.
Now you've got me interested in hunting down a black & gold men's Suburban for myself...!
Take care,

1972 Schwinn Super Sport - 32 lbs (CrMo)
19?? Astra (Motobecane) Tour de France fixie - 28 lbs (gas pipe)

My wife tells me the same thing about those nightime snacks. I told her the bike had to go on diet (while holding a Coors Light in my hand). Actually, I took up biking again because I was putting on too much weight and sure enough, since I started riding my bike regularly I've put on about 5 lbs. Maybe I should try the dieting and bike riding.
coors light thats a good start

OK, I weighed my bikes yesterday. Without my aerobars (with just the regular drop bars) and without the seat, my Calfee weighed 15.2 pounds. Once I got all the stuff on there, including the new leather bar tape...and saddle bag.... It weighed 19 pounds. My Trek 5200 weighed in at 19.4 pounds.
(These are not exactly Classic bikes or vintage bikes, but I thought I put this in here anyway since I weighed them yesterday.)
my 76 huffy is about 28-35lbs without the short fenders
so i have been working on a "New" vintage bicycle, like some of us were discussing last winter. I ran into a killa deal on a Don Walker (with a dent) and built it up as close to vintage style as I could. It is steel, it has tubulars, it has bar end shifters (the frame bosses are brazed on such that downtube shifters can't be used). I used Brew Lite brakes (single pivot sidepulls, I think diacompe before they ground 'em down and refinished 'em), with campy record brake levers. mostly newer campy record stuff otherwise.
The brake levers, the front fork, the bars, and the seatpost are carbon (but they all look sort of vintage). The frame is made with Columbus Life (Niobium drenched, whatever that means) steel tubing, tig or fillet. Wheels are Cane Creek Aerohead Titanium tubulars, with Ritchey WCS tires.
Without pedals, the bike weighs 17 pounds. I won't ride it until all of the sand is off of the road - when I do, I'll post some pictures and give a road report.

How do you like the leather tape? I have been lusting after some since Brooks came out with it...
