THAI CHALLENGER
KITTIPONG THONGSOMBAT
A fit and confident Pongsaklek Wonjongkam is vowing to beat Daisuke Naito and reclaim the WBC flyweight belt in Tokyo on March 8. Pongsaklek, who suffered the first loss in his 18 defences to the Japanese last July, said that he felt upbeat on his chances of regaining the title that he originally won in March 2001.
Having been sparring for more than 100 rounds, the Thai former champion feels both physically and tactically prepared.
''My chances of beating him are 80%. I was beaten last year because I underestimated him.'' said the 31-year-old boxer after a medical check up at Paolo Memorial hospital yesterday.
''I am very strong. The cold weather will not be problematic.''
Regarding the fight plan, the Nakhon Ratchasima native (67-3, 35 KOs) said that he would go on all out offence but employ his footwork and timing and speed punches.
''I am going to make use of my speed to beat him.''
The 33-year-old Naito (32-2-2, 20 KOs) defeated compatriot Daiki Kameda in his first defence last October. He just flew back to Japan after a brief training stint in the Philippines.
The fight initially planned to take place in Thailand last month will be held at the Ryogoku Sumo Arena in the Japanese capital.
