The First Daft Punk

Of all the bomb records I’ve hawked for crack or rent, this is one of most rare and most important. It's a good thing MP3 file sharing has allowed it to drip back into my ears. Fuck vinyl.

Again I find that I am astounded every time i listen to it. It goes something like this: I play it, check the date, 1994, shake my head...repeat. This EP is the first time anybody had heard of Daft Punk, their first release on a usually dancey and fluffy Italian label called UMM. It was also, in my opinion, the beginning of an absolute thrashing of what music is and would become. Daft Punk changed everything, most people will disagree that few albums since HOMEWORK have done more to redirect music as a whole. We bow down to them. The tracks I am about to post were composed when both these guys’ age ended with teen :|

Daft Punk THE NEW WAVE (Full Length Version)

Daft Punk ASSAULT

And one of my favourite Daft Punk tunes of all time.....

Daft Punk ALIVE

Here's what discogs had for them: Paris natives, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, met at Lycee Carnot in Paris in 1987. Taking their name from a Melody Maker reviewer’s description of an earlier project fronted by the duo called Darlin’, Daft Punk was born in 1994 when they released their debut 'Alive' on the Soma label.

In 1996 they sign with Virgin Music and release 'Homework' in 1997 to critical acclaim and commercial success. Both also start their independent house labels Roulé and Crydamoure during this time.

Playfully shunning the limelight the pair were often interviewed but their faces are concealed in photographs. In September 1999, Daft Punk reinvents themselves as robots, playing the game of the famous 1999 bug: "We did not choose to become robots. There was an accident in our studio. We were working on our sampler, and at exactly 9:09 AM. on September 9, 1999, it exploded. When we regained consciousness, we discovered that we had become robots."

'Discovery' is released in 2001. Its lighter and poppier sound marks a departure from the more orthodox house sound of the first album. It features collaborations from vocalist Romanthony, DJ Todd Edwards and DJ Sneak. In 2003 the full Discovery album is the soundtrack for Leiji Matsumoto's DVD 'Intersella 5555', an anime/mango space opera.

2005 sees the release of 'Human After All'. The third album release is diverse and fresh whist retaining their trademark Daft Punk sound. However, criticism is less tender regarding this opus, made in 6 weeks, and builded around musical improvisations. Their movie 'Electroma', inspired by the 'Human After All' experience, is released in France, but projected only a limited number of times.

10 years of cult hits and rarities are released in the anthology, 'Musique Vol 1 1993-2005' in April 2006. This compilation ends their contract with EMI.
