Double Podcast - Corporate responsibility explained
Is it a rock? A trick of Martian light on the eye? Or Osama Bin Laden waving from his barren hideout 300 million miles from planet earth?
NASA scientists have been puzzled by the peculiarly life-like image which has been beamed back to earth by one of their two robot rovers that are currently trundling about the surface of the red planet, on the hunt for clues of life on Mars.
It will delight spacewatchers who have been so far disappointed by the lack of images of little green men captured by the twin vehicles on their four year mission.
The alien figure was pictured at the far left of one of the panoramic photographs taken by the exploration rover, Spirit, from the top of a low plateau in late 2007.
The robot vehicle and its twin, Opportunity, have been roving around on Mars since completing their first successful mission in April 2004. Their principle goal is to hunt for geological evidence of water, that suggest an environment which may once have been hospitable to life.
Having been launched from Cape Canaveral, in Florida, in June and July in 2003, they travelled 487 million and 456 million km respectively to opposite ends of the planet, where they went on to explore the dusty, rock-strewn landscape.
Each solar-powered rover is a sort of the mechanical equivalent of a geologist walking the surface of Mars. The mast-mounted cameras are mounted 1.5 meters(5 feet) high and provide 360-degree, stereoscopic, humanlike views of the terrain.
The robotic arm is capable of movement in much the same way as a human arm with an elbow and wrist, and can place instruments directly up against rock and soil targets of interest. In the mechanical "fist" of the arm is a microscopic camera that serves the same purpose as a geologist's handheld magnifying lens.
The budget for the project is around $820million.
Last week, a similar probe captured the first images from the "dark side" of Mercury, which showed previously unseen hemisphere from 17,000 miles.

Just let Ryanair use it for their next advertising campaign. If someone comes forward and sues them, then... bingo, there is lfe on Mars, otherwise there is not.
Roberto Ruggiu, Roma, Italy
No other life is there and we know that from previous explorations.
Its a combination of poor image quality, shadows in the correct place and a bizarre rock formation.
I bet somewhere down there is another rock formation showing similar colouring and bizarre shaping.
Ricky, Cheshire, Uk
No, it just shows how low the intelligence of life on Earth is!
Stephen, St. Ives, England
What NASA doesn't show us is the cracked camera lens that occurred right after "Bigfoot" threw that rock!
Anybody who truly believes this is some sort of evidence that life in this form subsist on Mars probably wears a Rolex knock-off and claims it's a real Rolex.
Tim, Keizer, Orygun
Some people as NASA will have us too belive that the third planet is "red" but have allmost a bluish "earthlike" atmosphere up there, several sites on internet show how NASA fakes photograps of Mars and the Moon.. So search a little bit and see for your self...
Jhonny, Meråker, Norway
Maybe the dense atmosphere of earth prevents our brains from working properly. If they were placed into the thinner, dryer, colder Martian atmosphere we might be able to understand things more clearly. Is the picture real or is it memorex? Is it a miracle or a conspiracy? Can it be simultaneously both a miracle and just a coincidence of the sand and wind and timming of the picture? Did the picture really come from NASA and can the US government really be trusted any more than a used car salesman? No I mean a politician.
BuddhalovesPaine, Marienberg, Germany
Bummer I hope that somebody saw that!
BuddhalovesPaine, Marienberg, Germany
Is it real or is it memorex? Is it a miracle or is it just a coincidence that the wind and the sand have combined to make such an artistic sculpture? Is it just a coincidence that the rover took the photograph at exactly the right moment to give to give us this very clever image? If the photo would have been taken from a slightly different angle and not appeared interesting at all does that mean a miracle has not been performed? Since a person can see with the naked eye that the person is an extension of the rock does that mean that there are no rock people on Mars? What about the possiblity that some aliens who were depressed after watching humans in the zoo for the past 90 years decided to take a weekend vactation on Mars and create some art work?
BuddhalovesPaine, Marienberg, Germany
Whoever said that we shouldn't be looking for water on Mars is wrong. It is a known scientific fact ALL living things MUST have water to survive. Even bacteria.
Also, it is a known scientific fact ALSO that mars cannot harbor human-like life at the moment. Instead, they are looking to see if it every harbored life.
Herbie, NY, Belgium
thats my dad lol
Louie, ROVER, CA
i would think that if it was something human, and saw this "rover" treking along, wouldn't you think it would maybe be curious enough to want to get a closer look at this thing it's never seen before? or did it just sit there and do nothing.are there other pics of this thing?
gary, burlington, usa/vermont
Everyone stop being so stupid, this really is a martian and those who think it isn't are fooling themselves.
Wally, Liverpool, England
The truth is out there,it is definitly an alien.didnt you all see close encounters of the third kind:)if its not an alien, then for sure, its most definitly bigfoot!!!!!
jana, salem, Oregon U.S.A.
Why is it with all the technology, we can't seem to take a clear picture of anything that might leave a ? mark. Cmon people! Sure theres probably another life form out there, but don't u think someones messing with our head JUST A LITTLE!

In a Universe so vast and filled with galaxies we haven't even discovered yet... How could we be so full of our selves and believe we are the only form of life that exists!
We are just a spec in this galaxy not to mention universe...
Sandra, Jacksonville, FL
Sasquatch lives (on Mars)!
Julie Livingston, Nashua, NH
If humans weren't shaped the way we are, then nobody would think twice about this image. But, because we're shaped the way we are, and, because we tend to assume the entire Universe is made in our image, we see a living (read :humanoid") form in an aggregation of shadows.
It is highly cool, though, that we can see such great photos of Mars..
BTW what's the big deal about there being other life in the Universe? It's just a matter of distance, right?
For instance, ifa Giraffe exists 3,000 miles from where you are, then that's not in the least bit strange. So why would it be strange that another life form, no matter what it looks like, might exist a 1,000 light years away?
We're all in the same Universe, right? What's the big deal?

Why do we go after certain findings like - Will there be water?
perhaps life inhabiting those planets don't survive on what we consider to be most essential. We question the presence of oxygen. Are we sure it is oxygen that makes the survival possible there? America is for ever late in its true findings.

Sorry guys, it was me. Celebrating in style the fantastic spurs win last night. The fact the picture was produed in 2004 is a timeslip anomaly me and my (second string and extremely young and inexperienced) co-pilot are attempting to solve now. Is the object still there or has it moved? The answer to this should help us decide if ET is living on our doorstep.
Lincoln Psaila, Twickenham,
Dude, I have the same bacofoil hat. Not only has it protected me from them aliens like shown by that NASA spy robot, right?! It does also collect cosmic energy when I wear it upside-down. Found out by accident but is really cool! I mean, people should be let known about them things going on in space. But the government don't tell us nothing because they are them. Need I say more? Better not!
Anyone want to buy some cosmic energy? I store it in the dark in an old Ford Mondeo battery and its grade A!
James Taylor, Luton, UK
If you look at one of the bigger pictures, it looks like a baby/toddler below the rock. Has anyone else seen that?

Mysteron658, Valles Marineris, Republic of Mars
Me again. It's a hoax after a party by those Pine Gap Americans. I missed their clues. The rock is in the shape of Australia. Cape York (far north-east) is covered by sand or the present cyclone rainclouds and "Osama" is about to step onto sand-covered north-west. "One small step for a man" and he's at Pine gap. Let's hope Osama hasn't "tapped" into the transmissions and sent a warning.

Linda Riley, London, UK
It looks like an ape in a dress but I have suspisions of it being fake as it has appeared over time that every photo of things related to non proven life forms have always been blurry
Eliot, Bordeaux,
WEll, I'm not sure NASA puts out photoshopped stuff, but just like the famous "face" that later turned out to be a series of valleys and shadows, this is almost certainly an outdropping of rock.
phil, NY, NY
To be honest, they should just leave what ever (if there is anything) is out there, who knows what they could do?? I mean, lets face it, the day E.T come's knocking on my door then I'll believe it.
goverton, London,
Any geologist will confirm that this is a Bernetti Outcrop, formed by basalt-type rock cooling in extrusion and subsequently weathering. There are many similar examples in the Durban area (also in Co Donegal in Ireland).
A more interesting question is why NASA are so desperate for cheap and weird publicity. Is it just a coincidence that the markets collapsed the day this was briefed out? A case of 'don't look there, look here ?'
Tim O'Sleen, Durban, SA
You lot are all so stupid. It's clearly Chewbacca.
And if you look at the zoomed in picture carefully, you notice that Chewy is actually walking behind Boba Fet, lieing on his back in the foreground with his head on the left looking upwards.
Maybe that galaxy wasn't so long ago or far away after all...
Matt Brown, London, UK
its not a road, its part of the equipment...
anon, London,
Clearly Jesus Christ.
robert, richmond bc, canada
What is the brick road, complete with cement lines, in the front of the zoomed out photo..... that is more of a mystery to me - was it built by martian builders!
anon, London,
This 'photo' is made up of about 200 actual photo's taken by the probe(check the nasa website) and the fact that it shows a humanoid shape is nothing but a fluke!
Adam, buckhaven, fife
I think you mean "principAL goals"...
At least employ a few subs, boys...

Lord Lucan lives....
Kate, London,
Looks very much like lord lucan.

No need to get excited - it's only Bigfoot on holiday.
Gareth, London, UK
"no complex life on Mars would live longer than a few minutes" - well complex life such as us you mean... why do we all believe that to live or exemplify life - martian life-form require exactly what humans do, to survive, i.e. shelter (moderate warmth), sustenance (water) and breath (oxygen). Martians could thrive on carbon dioxide and freezing temperatures just as we have learn't to adapt to our environment so too could Martians...
Sally, London,
have you seen the original photo? a simple scaling exercise in relation to the mars rover itself shows this 'humanoid' to be roughly 9 inches in height.
im sure there is plenty of life out there in the universe, just not on mars!
alex, London, Uk
Couldn't have been a humanoid - it would have tried to flog bits of Beagle 2 as souvenirs!
Eric Pritchard, Clevedon, Somerset, UK
Its Luke Skywalker and that's Jabba the Hut behind him.
Cromwell, Leeds, England
Its Lord Lucan, definitely Lord Lucan.
Juan Santiago, Bergamo, Italy
How can anyone convince enthusiastic believers now that there are no yetis on Mars? Maybe the same thing from another angle?
Andras, Budapset, Hungary
It's clearly an advanced civilization trying to avoid us due to our reckless destruction of the environment and intolerance of gay people. As for the Nevada desert comment, hahaha. There aren't any aliens in Nevada!
Chuck, San Diego, CA
Let's hope the Martians know the difference between "principle" and "principal" because clearly The Times has given up on this one!
Steve Rudd, Huddersfield , W Yorkshire
Looks like Jesus to me, or possibly Brian.
Tim C, Southern England, United Kingdom
Max in London, the Martian light is reddish, so the flag will look reddish. You can't just change the pic so the flag looks white and say that's how the colours look on Mars. The light is reddish, the rocks are reddish, and the sky is, well, reddish.
James, Melbourne, AUS,
go back and photograph same area, Nasa must know where it was,if it's still there it's rock if not ...well who knows
bob vaddish, petersfield, uk
Great how you use the word "humanoid" - "human" would have done but it just wouldn't have had that space dimensionoid to it.
Ted, Rome, Italy
Finally, we have found the origin of the Chupacabra.
Steve, Leeds,
What a hoot!
And what about the Pyramid and the "face" on Mars that some unhinged people called "The second coming of Christ"!!!!!!!
gobbledegook, all of it ...
David Michael, London, UK
It's a funny shaped rock people! nothing more, nothing less. And a small rock (like a few centimeters) at that. Besides, read anything about: a) the martian atmosphere, which is 0.001 as massive as that of earth, and mainly consists of carbon dioxide, or b) martian weather, which rarely, if ever, gets any warmer than the freezing point of water. Barring bulky space suits, no complex life on Mars would live longer than a few minutes.
santiago flores, birmingham,
Take any NASA Mars photo, remove the red cast with photo software and you'll see what looks just like the Nevada desert. Go on, try it for yourself.
There was one photo a few years back which claimed to be a 360 deg panoramic, except when you panned it, your eye just knew there was a slice missing. I changed the colour cast till the Stars and Stripes flag was its true colour and there was a clear blue sky that was way too bright for a Martian sky.
Max , London,
theres an easy way to prove this. Take another photo of the same spot. Is the rock still there? If its gone, then it was indeed a living thing. If its there, its a rock, and you could take various photos from different angles to prove it.
for me I think its definitely an alien. its also clear that aliens like wearing green dresses and favour a bobbed haircut.
luke, nottingham, uk
is the remains from the "successful" british mission to mars!
x5wt, london,
The "human rock" is just a quirky angle or reflection, the main view is of Central Australia with one of its many mountain ranges in the background taken near Pine Gap, the top-secret American spy-military communications 15 miles from Alice Springs. Search Google images 'Central Australia or 'Pine Gap'. May be deliberate hoax, maybe just a stuffup. Note this comment from reseacher Timothy Good on his website:"â¦is one of a number of NSA bases located world-wide within the UKUSA network. Pine Gap seems to have a multitude of functions â¦It has been linked to the UFO phenomenon by a number of researchers, and appears to have been the source of the âbeamâ that appeared on the famous STS 48 footage, causing the anomalous objects, caught on the Space Shuttleâs video camera, to veer off in a multitude of directions."
E.Cowham, Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia
It is, to use the technical term, a rock.
James, Wichita Falls, Texas, U.S.A.
Just one minute, here.
Photo 2, the wider view, above and to the left of the solar panel (wing?) shows an anomaly that looks like a square compound with a hut in the middle, and the proportions would be about right, too.
I'm ready to be persuaded that these shots are coming to you from a desert somewhere in the USA (I've already noted the colour cast and the way-too-bright sky)
Max , London,
Um, the thing must be about 4cms high. Little green men, neigh, little green rocks, maybe. Many things can be put down to the human eye.
I remember one paper posting a picture of a cats eye sunken in the road that many people believed to be a monster emerging from a lake. Aliens may exist but the chances of them being on Mars a desolate planet with hardly any atmosphere and a freezing surface is highly unlikely.
David Tucker, Nelson, Wales
There was a chap from the UK who was very upset last week when most posts(bar a couple),were mickey takes about a giant (car driving- it was stood next to one!) -rat.
Ok, could it please be noted that immediate dig taking on this Mars article- could be a little premature? (maybe)
Let's look at the 'facts'-
1. The face on mars- before airbrushing (could be)
2. the 'structures' near it- (maybe)
3. The skull (possible)
This one's for the rodent fan mentioned above-
4. The rat type skull seen on the surface. (Hey, could be)
5. That massive shadow that appeared when the Ruskies sent their probe there- just before it was lost.(you never know)
And to end-
6. what's the odds that in our lifetime we'd actually have data gathering equipment ON a planet that's hit by an Asteriod?
What, zero?
Well, it's 1 in 75.
http://space.newscientist.com/article/dn13129
It's all happening there!
*In no way do i endorse or believe the 'facts' in this posting.*
Jez 'Cosmic Stargazer' W, Cydonia. (near Leeds),
It looks bizarre, it looks thirsty, in fact just watching the picture and this alien has made my mouth go dry.....Going for a drink and hopefully when I get back I will see a real alien on the Times.
Lucy, Birmingham,
Finally we know where Osama bin Laden have been all these years!
Bess, Uppsala, Sweden
Well...Clearly its not a mobile object so if its anything at all its a statue of previous civilization on mars. It's either that or we just found Waldo.
caleb harmon, Ironton, U.S. Ohio
It's a rock! If aliens did exist, then there's no reason to suppose they would look anything like us. After all, if we evolved from microbes, then so did they, so they would have no reason to have evolved in the same way we did.
By the way, look up Pareidolia on Wikipedia. I think this is a case of that.
Izzy, Edinburgh,
Looks like the poor chap was run over!
Bill Glanvill, Horsham, Sussex
Doesn't this image have an uncanny resemblance to that Bigfoot image that;s been making the circuit all these years?
Lighthope, Kettle Falls, United States
It's a Jawa! Quick, somebody get George Lucas on the phone so he can make plans for his next Star Wars sequel.
William F. Slater, III, Chicago, IL
Why do you think all these Martian probes have gone missing?
It's a SCOUSE ALIEN.
Harry Barracuda, Manama, bahrain
Has no one thought it might be the nasa's monkeys! they sent alot up in to space afew might have crashed.........Planet of the NasaApes!!!
AJ, Wallington, Enland
This is no surprise
We already have pictures of sphinxes, trees, pyramids, ornamental faces, strange glass like tunnels and more from the Martian surface
Expert interpretations of ancient texts also suggest a Martian connection with our heritage.
It may sound far-fetched but it's a fascinating subject
Ted Crewe, Leeds,
Interesting
Is it budget time again?
Tim, USA,
its michael jackson with a mask :)
Dan, birmingham,
Can't they get the rover to go back and take a second picture?
If thing is still there, it's a rock, (or a sloth), if not...
A Walden, Whitstable,
It's Osama bin laden, after all this time we thought he was in Pakistan.
Mike, Liverpool,
Why NASA has shown us this picture they never show anything of interest unless its due to a mistake. Now we know were they took Osama Bin Laden and in the second photo Ewan is right it looks like crops. Perhaps they did make a mistake and it is Afghanistan.
If it is Mars and it is a Alien and there is live force there Iam sure it wont be long before Golden Arches opens up in Mars serving such favorites as Egg McMuffin and Big Mac.
mohsen, malaga, spain
Looks like one of the elusive Big Foot photos.
D. Carpenter, Garfield, USA
Looks a lot more like a photo of somewhere in Afghanistan, to me. Are we sure that the pictures didn't get mixed up with someone's surveillance images?
Damian, Torquay, Devon, UK
Yeah it's probably a rock.
RockGirl, rockville, USA
David Bowie was totally right!
Bailey, Phoenix,
I had my 7 and 4 year old daughters look at the picture but told them nothing about what it was or could be. When I asked them what do you see they both said a man by a rock. Out of the mouth of babes.
Cartledge, Canal Winchester, Ohio
Look at the second photo, what are all of those straight lines in the foreground then? Could they be the green mans crops? Uh hum......
ewan, sherborne, dorset
Hum,
It seems to be where the good journalism went.
Blob, aberdeen,
"moving away downhill" hmmmmmmmm!!

It looks pretty clear to me that it's a rock. With the 'Body' being the rock and the 'Head', 'Lower Arm' and front of 'Lower Body' all made up of shadow.
