The bottom of the PlayStation 3

Labels
Sony readies the PS3 for shipment to the US and Canada

Documents concerning the PlayStation 3 have been submitted by Sony to the FCC for approval. The PlayStation 3 must go through several regulatory procedures, especially for those concerning radio frequencies as the console does support Wi-Fi capabilities. Sony's FCC submission also includes the bottom label that will be attached to each console. The interesting bit however, is that there are two versions of the same sticker -- one for PlayStation 3 consoles manufactured by Sony in Japan and one for those manufactured in China by Asustek.

At this point, details are scarce on where the PlayStation 3 will be officially mass produced. Details on why the console is being manufactured in two different places are also vague. At first it would seem as though two manufacturing locations will help meet supply demands, but as DailyTech previously reported, yields on the Cell processor used in the PlayStation 3 are currently below ideal rates.

The good news is that Sony has already commenced manufacturing of the PlayStation 3. Currently, the labels indicate that manufacturing began early this month, which brings hope to the release of the console for the holiday season. The PlayStation 3 has been pushed back a number of times since its first showing at E3 shows several seasons ago. The release for Europe has been pushed back even later than for US and Canada. DailyTech previously reported that Europe will not receive PlayStation 3units until March of 2007.

lol...you give FAR too much credit to the very short and especially when it comes to entertainment products, very forgiving memory of your average console playing American.

Don't by into the empty threats on these boards or faux outrage against Sony that you've witnessed over the past few months.

People do it all the time...some do it to sound tough, but most do it to vent their displeasure....once vented they are fine and go "Cool..let's buy it.".

Americans (and I am one btw) do it all the time...boycott this movie, I'm not buying this console, boycott this boycott that...then what the product/movie is released and it sells in record numbers....lol.

The same will be true with PS3....just sit back and wait you'll see...morons will pay 2-3 times the retail amount on Ebay even for them...

Sounds like you will not buy one anyway.. its much better than having to pay $350 extra for HD DVD player. You don't have to use the PS3 to play movies - you can just play games on it - Blu-Ray allows for most space on disk - which allows for bigger games.

If you don't like it, don't buy one and don't complain about it.

HD DVD is 30gb dual layer, and Blue Ray is 50gb, thats hadrly 10x. I also see no evidence to suport anything else you say about it being 3x faster. It is also non existant int he marketplace so far.

All Sony and the Blue Ray group did was delay hd dvd and keep BOTH out of our hands for the past 3 years while companies aregue over which standard to adopt... I agree Blue ray has better potential, but that is way off in the future, by then, we will have moved on to something else (and Sony will probably have another proprietary piece of crap format to delay things then too).

Argghhh I hate Sony

Now for Mister Thud:

quote:

1)-Blu-Ray's storage capacity is ten times HD-DVD, theoreticaly can reach 200gb(100 each side)

2)-If you ask what that means, it means you can virtually program limitless game scenerios with unbelievable quality, same goes for movies. Your normal DVD can give you maximum 3 hours of enjoyment, Blu-Ray can give you a disc of probably 20 hours.

3)- Blu-Ray can read and write faster, meaning you'll access the content quicker and run installations faster, there's something about Bill Gates talking about the future of this media and saying the times of installation are over where you can play it right off disc, for this to be possible you'll need very fast access, and Blu-Ray is triple the speed of HD-DVD.

4)- The protective layer on Blue-Ray is a lot thicker which means it will last longer, and will be more durable.

I numbered these to make it easier:

1)- HD-DVD is already at 35GB dual layer, so you're already wrong on this point. Isn't HD-DVDs final expected capacity somewhere around 120GB? Also HD-DVD is much cheaper to produce than Blu-Ray due to the similarity of the manufacturing technique.

2)- With games these days not numbering over 5GB, I find myself hard pressed to believe that games will take advantage of the (theoretical) 200GB within the 3 year refresh rate cycle of the console.

3)- You completely go out of wack and lie on this one, makes me believe that you are a complete Blu-Ray seller:

http://www.blu-ray.com/faq/#bluray_vs_hddvd

Blu-Ray Data transfer rate [Data] (1X) = 36.0 Mbps
HD-DVD DTA [Data] = 36.55 Mbps

So please show me the triple speed, this is taken from a Blu-Ray promotional website by the way.

4)- Again more lies:

http://www.blu-ray.com/faq/#bluray_vs_hddvd

Protection Layer Blu-Ray = 0.1mm
Protection Layer HD-DVD = 0.6mm

Also due to the laser head running less than 0.2mm from the disk itself, the disk will get quite hot not just from the turning of the platter (which will be very high on the next HD-DVD and Blu-Ray drives), but at those speeds and heat every CD/DVD/Disk warps a little. It also happens in current drives but there is no real problem with it, however with the laser head being so close there is a very large chance the disk will bump it. And it is not the worry that the disk will get scratched, but that the laser head will be damaged since it is very delicate.

Dear god can't fanboys on either side these days at least have facts to back up their propoganda? Note that I am not getting any console this generation so I have no bias, I just say the technical facts as I hear/read them.

Who even cares. Right now HD DVD is 30, and BR is 50, and the speed is the same. If it wasnt for Sony and thier proprietary tech and stall tactics, we would have had HD DVD 3 years ago, and it would be cheap by now.

i accidentally hit "worth reading" and meant to hit reply... oh well you get a free higher rating.

right now blu-ray is 25gb on the released movies. couldn't get the dual layer discs in production in time. so right now HD-DVD is 30gb and BD is 25gb, HD-DVD is using AVC/VC-1, and BD has been using MPEG2. One of the studios finally switched over to VC-1 and improved the quality on some of the most recent movies.

HD-DVD has won the opening battle... but I think BD will win the war.

quote:

1)- "The 200 GB disc will be protected by a hard coating called DURABIS2. The coating stands up to the industry's steel wool rubbing test and resists dust, scratches and fingerprints"

I did state the potential is greater.

2)-The potential speed is a lot higher, HD-DVD can't get any faster, and 120GB potential HD-DVD? Prove your source for that..

3)-If you don't believe they'll utilize a 200GB disc, as the HD quality gets higher so does the disc usage, not only that but MMO's will take advantage of this tremendously where we won't have to see background pop up as we move towards it, it will all seamlessly be running in real-time.

Again numbered for clarity:

1)- Anyone care to test this on a current Blu-Ray disk if they can find one?

Also that is only for TDK Blu-Ray disks, not for Verbatim which use:

ScratchGuard technology which protects against scratches, abrasion, fingerprints and traces of grease

Not to mention that the hard coating on TDK discs is not mandatory and is optional according to the demands of the consumer.

Also HD-DVD movies last I checked are currently region free, I cannot say the same about Blu-Ray now. So if I wanted to get a Blu-Ray movie I would have to share my region with:

China, Middle East, Russia, and South Asia.

What's my chances of getting the movie in English in the Middle-East? However, assuming it still has no regions, I can get a friend in the US/EU to ship me a box of HD-DVD movies that look interesting to me. Also not to mention the fact that Blu-Ray has far more secure DRM protocols in place than HD-DVD which limits me even further.

2)- What's your source that HD-DVD cannot get any faster?

Also you are correct, the max for HD-DVD now that I check again is a quad-layer 60GB, however double sided makes it 120GB. However as I see Sony having trouble making Dual-Layer Blu-Ray disks at 50GB I am hard pressed to believe that they will have Octo-Layer 200GB (or Quad-Layer double sided) disks before Holographic media or another successor.

3)- Like I said, with MMOs still easily coming in under the 5GB mark today, I would like to see how in gods name they will within three years make any game over 100GB. I mean how many textures can a person put into a game, not to mention that the textures are limited by the speed of the RSX itself and the 256MB of allocated graphic memory for texture space. Also can you imagine at the current read and write speeds of Blu-Ray being released on the PS3, the amount of time it will take for it to catergorize and search during a game for the correct asset?

2) Could you please provide your source for the quad-layer 60GB HD DVDs? I've only been able to find information on triple-layer being the maximum.

Sony is not having trouble producing dual-layer BDs; it is an issue with cost. And TDK has already produced a working 200GB disc (although it's actually six 33GB layers), so it's not unreasonable to expect it to be available in a few years. And don't even get me started on succesors.

3) I believe the PS3's drive will only read up to dual-layer media. But I'd like to add that a spokeperson from Insomniac stated that Resistance: Fall of Man will take up 22 GB.

My pleasure Mr. Kamasutra (cute name):

Could you please provide your source for the quad-layer 60GB HD DVDs? I've only been able to find information on triple-layer being the maximum.

http://www.engadget.com/2005/09/19/blu-ray-vs-hd-d...

So far they have only managed to put out a working 45GB as you stated, however the theoretical maximum for HD-DVD is 60GB.

Sony is not having trouble producing dual-layer BDs; it is an issue with cost. And TDK has already produced a working 200GB disc (although it's actually six 33GB layers), so it's not unreasonable to expect it to be available in a few years. And don't even get me started on succesors.

I believe the cost issue is a sidepoint as they need new facilities to produce the o.1mm disks instead of the standard DVD equipment that produces 0.6mm.

And about the 200GB disk, in a few years as you state we will have other storage mediums for that, such as holographic or protein techology (of which I remember the former has a working prototype).

I believe the PS3's drive will only read up to dual-layer media. But I'd like to add that a spokeperson from Insomniac stated that Resistance: Fall of Man will take up 22 GB.

Can you please show the link to this and to the games homepage, I am always welcome to learn new info. Also keep in mind that 22GB easily falls within HD-DVD territory and for the Xbox360 would take 3X DVD-9 (Dual Layer) disks, as a sidenote they are releasing a Xbox360 with a internal HD-DVD drive as well as a external HD-DVD add-on; a game like you listed might be put out in HD-DVD format as well though I would highly doubt it.

Where's ur few yrs claim comes from? Or are u impling that, ur investment in HD-DVD will become outdated and fade out within just a few yrs? LOL

As a storage medium, with Holographic media claiming a 2009 release last I heard. Also protein media is looking good.

GT4 in PS2 is already harsing the limit of current D9 DVD storage technology.

Then, like with CDs before DVD games became popular, they will put the game on two DVD-9s which will be far cheaper than using either Blu-Ray or HD-DVD currently. For most games this is easily feasible.

Man, Toshiba also having trouble on making Dual layer HD-DVD too. U should mention the fact for both sides or I would belive u are a HD-DVD/360 sales! Don't forget the main driving force for Japanese optical media R&D, the Mitsubishi Chemicals and TDK, supports BD rather than HD-DVD.

Where do you see Toshiba having trouble? All HD-DVD movies so far have been released on Dual-Layer discs, I can't say the same about Blu-Ray if I recall correctly. Also a single 50GB Dual Layer Blu-Ray write once disk right now costs $48 USD MSRP right now, that is very expensive in my book. And like I stated before, I have no interest in getting HD-DVD or Blu-Ray, same goes for a Xbox360, Wii or PS3. I don't have money to waste on these fancy toys, however I do enjoy learning about them.

Look over here as well for the full Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD consortium:

http://www.engadget.com/2005/09/19/blu-ray-vs-hd-d...

Well, but it's a certain that 360 won't have more than 8.1GB for games, which even current Xbox1 and PS2 games are completely utilizing this limit. Where's comes your 100GB claim? What's the defination of so called "Next generation console"?

How is that for certain? Like I stated above they can simply put the data on more than one DVD-9, this would work fine for the majority of games out there.

http://gamesfirst.com/index.php?id=1132

As you can see the following facts:

quote:
Average size for Xbox DVD-9 games:

Average for 2001: 1.81 gigs ( 21% of disc )
Average for 2002: 2.17 gigs (25% of disc)
Average for 2003: 2.47 gigs (29% of disc)
Average for 2005: 3.20 gigs ( 37% of disc )

Total size increase between 2001 and 2005 was: 77%

Over the course of its life, the size of the average Xbox title increased by 77%. If the Xbox 360 size increases at the same rate, and the four 360 titles are representative of the whole, we can expect the average Xbox 360 title in 4 or 5 years to be around 7.40 gigs, and to occupy about 87% of the disc's capacity.

So now may I ask your source for the "which even current Xbox1 and PS2 games are completely utilizing this limit"? While you're at it, throw in the source for the 100GB+ games as well.

HD-DVD can at most reaching 2 layers only

Erm... They already have a working Triple-Layer 45GB prototype.

That shows u are completely a Xbox sales. If we count for Japanese's announced date, Sony's PS2 were selling in Japan since 1999.

For your information, I only own a PS2 and no other console currently, so I wouldn't call myself a Xbox salesperson...

Also the PS2 was released late 2000 in Japan, announcement date doesn't count.

For 10 yrs product cycle PS3(which Sony claims), BD is a MUST!

With both the PS1 and PS2 coming in nowhere near 10 years refresh rate, I highly doubt 10 years would even be practical when your competitor has its 6th generation console out while you're sitting on your third still.

Are u kidding me? That no way for u to compare a 6mm paper with 1mm titanium?

Like I stated, the protective layer is not mandatory for Blu-Ray, and Verbatim doesn't use the same strength material as TDK does on their widely hyped protection for BD disks.

1. Cell is a strange CPU to throw into a console. Utilizing the extra cores on the Xbox 360 (which can handle two threads each, by the way) is much easier than having to create special code for the SPEs. Not to mention that Microsoft's XDK is and should continue being superior to Sony's development tools. Then there's also the fact that Xenon is a 3.2GHz part and who knows what the Cell on the PS3 will end up clocking at...

2. I'm not sure I agree with this either. While I do think that XDR is interesting, the fact that the RAM is not unified is a bad call, in my opinion. ATI's unified memory (and memory controller) gives developers the freedom to partition memory however they consider necessary. The Xbox's eRAM is also very nice, and increases the effective bandwidth of the system quite a bit.

3. Best GPU? Maybe, and that's a big maybe, since they can't be easily compared. The PS3 GPU is basically a 256MB 7900GTX (with 128bit memory width) while Xenos is more closely related to the R600 than to current ATI video cards (that's not to say that it is superior than current ATI video, it's just more similar to the next-generation one). Regardless, though, both systems should close enough in graphic power that it won't make much of a difference, and the Xbox will have been in the market for a year when the PS3 launches at it's insane price point.

4. Huh? Are you referring to Sony's shockless dual-shock controller? Wii is the system with the superior peripherals...

So while I think the Xbox 360 is the better system because it is better balanced, I still believe that Sony will have a software advantage. This may evaporate relatively fast if it can't get enough systems out there, though.

By the way, did anyone notice the 120V ~ 3.2A thing? This may mean that the system will draw ~300W...

Finally the one to take the cake is, sony is still king of all that is multimedia, everyone was willing to shell out whatever they could to get an xbox360 but will deny that, just wait until the week before launch when people start lining up to get one.

1)- The SPEs are terrific if you are planning on doing a lot of Floating ops such as decoding video, however trying to program them for general purpose is a whole different challange.

2)- No comment.

3)- Xenos by the way is called the R500, which means nothing about its performance. The PS3 GPU [RSX] from what I have gathered around is a modified G71 core with I believe purevideo support nixed (I guess it saves on transistor count and power, who needs it with the SPEs around?) with clock speeds roughly that of a 7950 GT or 7900 GT.

4)- No comment

I don't believe the extra SPE is actually disable, but instead reserved for other system activities. I personally believe that the 7 SPE on systems are the main power house of the unit and that the PowerPC portion is only used as a controller of the seven SPE's.

RE: Cell
By ChronoReverse on 9/15/2006 2:13:14 PM , Rating: 2
Those articles mentioned that out of the 7 SPEs, 1 to 2 will be used for system activities depending on the situation.

There was also a big hullaboo about how it's not very deterministic how many SPEs are available at a given moment. This remains to be seen whether it's true or not.

RE: Cell
By Chillin1248 (blog) on 9/15/2006 5:34:25 PM , Rating: 2
Actually the full design of the Cell was to have on PowerPC core derivative and 8 Floating Point SPEs. However Sony automatically disabled one to improve yields for the PS3, so even fully working 8 SPE Cells have been downgraded to 7 SPEs to improve numbers, it is highly impractical for them to program a console where some would be more powerful than others.

RE: Cell
By hstewarth on 9/15/2006 9:14:17 PM , Rating: 2
Just think of this.. not sure if it is true.. but interesting to think about.

Lets say Sony did disable 1 of 8 SPE but it was done in software and not in hardware - no matter what they stated.

And then after the release of PS3, Microsoft releases a couple of games that are faster one day. So if Sony desires to increase the performance of the PS3, they simple make an update to bios/system code on the PS3 and increase power.

I believe that the SPE are more than just Floating point units. What I saw they are extremely fast micro cpus that have internal memory - but can't talk to main system bus memory - that is the job of powerpc unit. I would assume that comunication between the SPE and PowerPC core is extremely fast.

RE: Cell
By microAmp on 9/16/2006 12:47:32 AM , Rating: 3
Wouldn't ever happen. The reason for 7 instead of 8 was to increase the yield of them. Sure some will have 8 good ones but 1 disabled. Others will have 7 good ones and 1 was disabled because of a defect during the manufacture process.

Yes. That's the original concept of "Cell". As a analyst from Lawrance Nation Library, the PowerPC core should be used as a controller inside Cell.

But anyway, it's up to game developers to decide how they are gotta to program. For instance, it is obvisouly that most 1st generation PS3 games only program Cell as a orindany CPU, which gretaly hurts her potential peroformance. Time is needed for software developer to unlock the potential of every new hardware. I would like to point out that most current 360 games have never utilize the 2nd and 3rd core inside her hardware as well. LOL

I believe it was originally supposed to be inside but the heat was too great and they threw it outside., not sure on this.

If you look at the latest pictures of the PS3 unit. You will see a standard power connector and on/off switch - this is like means that the cable goes thought the wall with out a power supple.

On my XBox 360, the power connected to unit from power block is non standard adapter, but the connector from the wall to the external power supple block is very similar to the one that is actually on the PS3 unit.

Also this could explain extra size in the PS3 unit.

My guess is that the power supple is inside the unit. We will know in 2 months time.

What to EXPECT FROM SONY?

Sony says that its first Blu-ray Disc burner, the BWU-100A, should be available in Europe this month at an estimated VAT-inclusive price of €960 (£648) - a figure that strikes us as a complete rip-off when compared to the US price of US$750 (£380 ex-VAT/£447 inc).

What makes the price even harder to stomach is that this buys a 5.25in EIDE drive that isn't yet able to play commercial Blu-ray Disc movies, even if it's fitted into PC that does have an HDMI-equipped graphics card!

But Sony seems pretty unconcerned about the situation. All it says is that it's planning to offer customers a free upgrade service some time "later this year" to the supplied CyberLink PowerDVD player software and that this should allow the drive to handle commercial BD movies - "in a suitably-specified playback environment".

THE above article appears in HEXUS-they at HEXUS,HIT the nail on its head with the hammer.Honest & Frank.
This article should be an eyeopener to all -What to expect from SONY on release of its new products-certainly plenty of disappointments on the way.

May be there is too many fake Sony news "composition" by anti-Sony illiteracies in Europe. The BWU-100A is fully compatable with BD-Video. At least this compatability is proven in USA, Japanese, Australia/NZ and Hong Kong Asia Pacific versions.

Not when the protection will be fully enabled once they get around to settling it.

It'll be interesting to see how consumer response to the PS3 launch. Personally, I think its a state of the art console back when it was announced quite a long while back. But now its specs hace scaled down quite a bit, and pretty pricey. I think I will go the Wii way, and try out the new motion detection controllers instead.

There is no any single spec scaled down of PS3, if u buy the expensive version.

There is only a cut down version for more budget users.

But frankly speaking, none of the 360s can match up PS3's in achitecture analyst conducted by IEEE.

these were my first thoughts exactly. Unlikely, but it would be the perfect end to Sony's storied woes.

Although who knows how much of a setback it would actually cause...

"Yeah, so... the FCC is giving us the test unit back promptly, right? Because uh, we kinda allocated that one to one of the Best Buys already..."

Wrong interpretation?

I don't know how submitting labels and documents indicates that they have already started manufacturing the console. Even if they have shipped (one) working unit of PS3 for the approval process, that is hardly indication that the manufacturing is underway (it is a step forward, however, as the devkits haven't looked anything like the final console until now).

When Sony announced the delay in Europe, they indicated that the manufacturing would start in late September. Up until this point, all their announcements have been basically 'best case scenario' announcements, I don't know how they could beat their own predictions in this regard.
