by Kathy Romita The long-awaited opening of Luthor Hall at the Metropolis Museum of Art will take place on January 15, 2002. The announcement was made by Smallville businessman Lex Luthor, the hall's benefactor, who declared, "It deserves a glittering unveiling because of the rare antiquities the addition will house." No doubt one of the many artifacts Luthor is referring to is the Shield of Alexander, an ancient, jewel-encrusted bronze breastplate that once belonged to Alexander the Great. Luthor remarked, "Its design symbolizes courage and strength--two qualities I greatly admire." The priceless garment will be the most valuable piece in the entire museum.
A 2,200-year-old terra-cotta warrior from Xian, China, will stand like a sentry in the hall along with an Alaskan stone totem pole and a breathtaking Hindu statue. A precious jewelry exhibit, which shows various stages of gem preparation--mining, polishing, cutting and setting--will be displayed prominently in the elegant wing along with some recently acquired pieces. "My family has enjoyed this artwork for so long, we thought it was time for others to appreciate it too. We're not |
the Gettys, but there are some incredible works in our collection," added Luthor. The sleek, new addition features marble floors with steel latticework and glass walls, creating a cool elegance that allows light to travel from room to room. Architect Seth Wein explains, "The best way to view art is by using natural light. The museum maintains a selected level of light with bulbs that illuminate or dim according to the brightness of the outside source. The specially treated glass filters out the sun's harmful rays, thus protecting the artwork." Proceeds of the formal affair will benefit several charities. "I want to give back to the community," Luthor emphatically stated. Metropolis' hottest event planner, Suki, asserts "the gala will be fit for a king--or conquering hero." She has hired Akira, whom Suki describes as "the best sushi chef in this hemisphere," to prepare the feast.
It is rumored that Lex's father, Lionel Luthor, will not attend due to business commitments in Indonesia. But Smallville's wealthiest resident can more than adequately handle opening night duties by himself. "This event will proudly introduce the city of Metropolis to its newest gift," declared Luthor.
