Smallville may have its share of unusual occurrences, but both longtime residents and new arrivals agree that it's still a town where you don't have to lock your doors. But that, like so many other things these days, may be about to change.
A few days ago, a mysterious burglary took place at the Talon, local gathering place for many Smallville teens. Lana Lang lives in the apartment above the busy coffee shop owned by Lex Luthor. She left during the afternoon and, when she returned, her apartment was ransacked. "It was a total mess," Lang told officials. "Drawers were emptied, furniture was overturned...I'm still trying to put everything back the way it was."
Authorities questioned patrons at the Talon, but so far, no one has come forth with any information regarding the intruder. When asked about the safety of the Talon, manager Martha Kent commented, "I suppose someone could have entered through the alley [behind the Talon], but there are always people coming and going in the Talon." She then added, "It is strange that no one saw anything, though."
Still shaken by the break-in, Lang nevertheless seems intent upon discovering the burglar's identity. "I know most people would just like to put something like this behind them. But I can't," Lang said. When pressed to disclose a reason for her insistence, the Smallville High senior paused then answered, "Because something was taken from my apartment, from me. Something important. There was only one thing missing, and I want to know who took it."
