With only two weeks left before Lionel Luthor stands trial for murder, stunning new developments once again placed the former CEO of LuthorCorp in the center of speculation. Clark Kent, a witness for the prosecution conspicuously absent for the past several months, has returned.
Kent's return may prove consequential in a case that Luthor's attorneys argue is largely built on circumstantial evidence. When asked about Kent's mysterious absence and then sudden return, Gwendolyn Reed, counsel for Luthor, seemed unconcerned about the possible ramifications the teenager could have on the trial.
"Mr. Kent's recent absence and, likewise, his sudden return do not surprise us in the least. He is, after all, only a teenager," Reed said in a public statement yesterday. "Such impulsive and irresponsible behavior is common with people his age, a fact I am confident the jury will also recognize when considering Mr. Kent's testimony." Kent was unavailable for comment.
Kent's renewed participation in the trial seems to be a twist of fate for Lionel Luthor. But twists of fate seem standard these days.

Chloe Sullivan, another student at Smallville High and primary witness for the prosecution, is presumed dead after a house she entered exploded three months ago.
As a key witness in a federally prosecuted trial, Sullivan's death was under investigation until recently. Details of the explosion were kept secret during that time but her death is now attributed to an accidental gas explosion.
Without Sullivan's testimony, the outcome of Luthor's trial is unclear. "Miss Sullivan's untimely death was, of course, tragic and regretful," Reed said, when asked about the investigation. "I offer my deepest sympathies to those she left behind," she added.
One of those people is Lois Lane, a cousin of Sullivan's. "I just can't believe Chloe's actually gone," Lane said in a phone interview. "I keep thinking that, if I just look a little deeper, I'll find her."
With such tragedy and mystery already surrounding Luthor's trial, one can only hope that it will be a matter of time before the truth is unearthed from the labyrinthine tunnels of death and destruction winding around this case.
