Title: Netscape will not shut down on its own
Bookmark:
Question: Hi.  I just upgraded to Communicator 4.79 thinking that my problem would be solved:  Here it is:

I was having problems with Netscape 4.61, so I upgraded to 4.79 no
problem.  But I still have the main problem that I was having before.
If I leave my browser open, and the dial up disconnects, then when I
try
to get the mail after reconnecting, I get the error that I don;t have
enough memory and that I need to contact the sys. admin.  Ok, then I
have to RESTART the whole *#$$(!! PC in order to get mail.  But before
I
have to do that, I canNOT just shut down, I have to ctrl+alt+del  in
order to shut down the Netscape.  This is driving me NUTS!  I was also
getting some registry errors, but I think I have that under control.  I
have plenty of ram.

Also,  why EVEN if I go in to msconfig and tell what I want to start up
when I boot up, does it all go back to what it was doing before when I
UNCHECKED them so that they would NOT start!

Please, help, someone!  I am sick of this !

I just wanted you to know that I have spent the past two weeks online searching for answers. I finally relented and paid the fee for your services.

Within a half an hour I had the answers I have been desperately seeking. This site is worth every penny and if you take into consideration the time I have lost looking elsewhere it is a bargain. Thank you. ~jonmuse9

Love your site - VB6 / Interbase SQL developer

Experts-Exchange website is well worth the nominal monthly fee.

I took a contract position after failing in the job market for several years, not knowing much of anything about VB6, SQL, client-server, etc. I had primarily been involved in PC database development, Access, Foxpro, dBase for a number of years and couldn't break into the real nitty gritty stuff. Thanks in part to Experts-Exchange, I was a great success on the contract position, moved on to a full-time benefited position based on that experience, and continue to support the contract development via VPN at home.

Just wanted to say thanks to all the excellent experts!

What is your Operating System and version?  Is WindowsUpdate current with fixes?

Check your Dial Up Networking connection and see if you have it set to keep the connective alive or what your settings are; also check your specific ISP connection as well.

Listening further when you can provide a bit more info.

What items have you unchecked in MSCONFIG from your start up batch that continues to load?

Also check the INI files (win.ini) in msconfig to see what you have after the run= and load= statements, anything there, should be edited out or unchecked to bypass, reboot and test.

Also check your Netscape Preferences; here's their main link, in case there's an upgrade you wish to install.

Rank: Sage

Clear cache, temporary internet files, history files and run maintenance (cleanup/scandisk/defrag) and try multiple reboots.

Also, are you using more than one Browser?

Problem:
I have downloaded Communicator but am unable to install it. When I double-click the file, it decompresses to about 98% and then the following error message pops up:

The decompression of %s failed. There may not be enough free space available in the TEMP directory.

Solution:

First, check your autoexec.bat file and make sure there is a line that reads:

SET TEMP=C:\TEMP

Make sure that this directory exists, or that if your Temp directory is in a different location than this example, the path is set accordingly.

HI.  I am using Windows98.  NO, I do not use more than one browser. I was so frustrated that I just did a system recovery as I was having a registry error upon rebooting.  Now I am just trying to get my machine back to the way it WAS!  There are so many little things that I just do not always remember how to do them since I do them so infrequently.  ONe thing is the task bar at the bottom.  HOw do I get the CD disk icon off of there????  I clik properties, but I don't see where to get it off.  Also, about the start up stuff....how come when I uncheck them, that they just reappear again??????? GRR.... thanks

It really helps to know your specifics, since there are just too many possibilities that could cause errors such as this.  Did you check WindowsUpdate?

Also, try to do a scanreg/fix to fix your registry problem, like this:

Do a normal shutdown, leave off 2-3 minutes.  Reboot holding CTRL and select MS DOS Prompt.  Navigate to your windows\command directory and type in
scanreg/fix.

If Windows is installed in the standard directory, you'd do this at the command prompt:

cd c:\windows\command
then when you're at the windows\command prompt type this:
scanreg/fix

Then reboot and see if the problem is fixed.

About the CD Icon, unclear where it appears.  Also, about what you've disabled on start-up, what exactly is reappearing?

Specifics help us help you more quickly.

Asta

Rank: Sage

Also, when you find you are hanging up and can't do a normal shutdown, jot down what all is running when you check Task Manager using ALT+CTRL+DEL.  Based on the errors you've provided so far, you could have a problem with an application running that is causing what's called a "memory leak".

Rank: Sage

YOu also said ..  HOw do I get the CD disk icon off of there????  You must have installed some software that loads the CD icon into your task bar at the bottom (systray).  Do you have a CD-RW, or a standard CD-Rom?  You may need to go into your software to reconfigure how it behaves.  When you do the ALT+CTRL+DEL to show what all is running in task manager, we can narrow it a bit more.

Any luck here?

Hi, ksb7290; this site is all about "collaboration" which means you ask, we respond and you respond.

What is your progress here?

If no response in 7 days, I will ask a Moderator to close this.

"Also, about the start up stuff....how come when I uncheck them, that they just reappear again??????? GRR.... thanks"

As already been asked twice and never answered, what programs are you referring to? There are some programs that even if you uncheck them to load at boot will still load because the setting will get overridden. Now if you would be so kind as to give us some feedback instead of just complaining maybe we could help you here.

Hi Asta
:>)

Rank: Sage

Hi, Ray.  Thanks for your willingness to help here.  We'd both love to help ksb7290 find the source of these problems and help fix them.

I've asked a Moderator to split points here between you and me to close this, assuming we'll not get any additional input from ksb7290, given zero response so far.

If you can add any other possibilities, that would be great, it would add value to this as it moves to our PAQ to close.

Asta

Rank: Sage

There are many ways in which start-up files load, start-run-msconfig has the start up files, but also items can load from autoexec.bat, config.sys, from the win.ini file from the load= and run= statements, and specific ini files from other apps.  Try using the ALT+CTRL+DEL function to display Task Manager and let us know what is running that you don't want to run.

Also, when you boot, if there are load problems, check the bootlog.txt file (bootlog.prv) for the prior problems logged to see what loads failed and tell us; in the event this is also a part of the problem.

Check your system with an updated Viruscan program and Virus Definition files to rule out any infections (trojan/virus/worm).

Run maintenance (clear browser cache, clear autocomplete items), run cleanup/scandisk/defrag.

Good luck,
Off to work.

No split is nessary, Asta gave all the help, I was only trying to get a response from ksb7290 to answer her questions.
:>)

Rank: Sage

I'd sure prefer a point split, because Ray did mention/confirm that some settings will not be modified, which is definitely the case for some software and it just feels right.

Asker has chosen not to respond to any follow up requests, so don't envision hearing anything further (sorry to say).

Thanks, C101, for your help.

Ray, B good, k?  LOL

Rank: Sage

No response here, Computer101, please process a point split and close this item.

ksb7290; perhaps you have a "spyware" problem, which this free software may help you eradicate.
