Title: different operatingsystems on one computer
Bookmark:
Question: I have here a problem to install different operating systems on one computer. I want to use win98, winnt40, win2000 server, win2000 professional and two 40gb disks.

On the first disk i made 7 different partitions:

1. c: fat16 with 2gb
2. d: fat32 with 4gb win98
3. e: fat16 with 4gb winnt
4. f: fat32 with 5gb win2000 server
5. g fat32 with 5gb win2000 professional
6 h: fat32 with 10gb
7 i: fat32 with 10gb

Then i insert an other 40gb disk in the computer and formatted it with win2000 professional (dynamic data).

But when i restart the computer and start the win98 system i am not able to see the secound disk at all.

Also i recognize (but this is not the fault of the secound disk) that i can choos from the boot menu windows nt but when i select this menue i will get the following message:

---------------
Windows 2000 was not able to start because there was an disk configuration problem.
It was not able to read from the selected start partition.
Please check the startpath and the data hardware.
Please read in the windows 2000(TM)- dokumentation about hardware diskconfiguration and take also the hardwareferenzbooks for further informations.
-----------------

The question is why i will get a win2000 message, when i choose windows nt.
My boot.ini looks like:
---------------
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(5)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(5)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Server"
/fastdetect
scsi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINNT="Windows NT Workstation, Version
4.0"
scsi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINNT="Windows NT Workstation, Version
4.0 [VGA-Modus]" /basevideo /sos
C:\="Microsoft Windows"
---------------

The other systems win98 and win2000 professional and server i can start without any problem.

Maybe the problem is, that win2000 overwrote some files in my startpartition c:

The contents of c: looks like:

-----------------
   SH      C:\BOOTLOG.TXT
   SH      C:\COMMAND.COM
    H      C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT
A          C:\FRUNLOG.TXT
   SH      C:\MSDOS.---
   SH      C:\SETUPLOG.TXT
   SH      C:\SUHDLOG.DAT
   SH      C:\NETLOG.TXT
A   H      C:\CONFIG.SYS
   SHR     C:\MSDOS.SYS
   SH      C:\DETLOG.TXT
   SH      C:\BOOTLOG.PRV
   SH      C:\SYSTEM.1ST
   SHR     C:\IO.SYS
   SH      C:\VIDEOROM.BIN
A          C:\PCcheck.LOG
A          C:\HydraVision 98.lnk
A          C:\SCANDISK.LOG
A          C:\boot.bak
   SH      C:\bootsect.dos
           C:\boot.har
A  SHR     C:\NTBOOTDD.SYS
A  SHR     C:\arcldr.exe
A  SHR     C:\arcsetup.exe
A  SHR     C:\ntldr
A  SHR     C:\NTDETECT.COM
A  SH      C:\boot.ini
--------------

I heard that there is available an special boot manager programm. Maybe i must use such this.

Hope there can somebody help me who i can start again windows nt and add some other systems (like linux) and how i can see the secound 40gb disk under windows98.

Thanks a lot for any answer.

I just wanted you to know that I have spent the past two weeks online searching for answers. I finally relented and paid the fee for your services.

Within a half an hour I had the answers I have been desperately seeking. This site is worth every penny and if you take into consideration the time I have lost looking elsewhere it is a bargain. Thank you. ~jonmuse9

Love your site - VB6 / Interbase SQL developer

Experts-Exchange website is well worth the nominal monthly fee.

I took a contract position after failing in the job market for several years, not knowing much of anything about VB6, SQL, client-server, etc. I had primarily been involved in PC database development, Access, Foxpro, dBase for a number of years and couldn't break into the real nitty gritty stuff. Thanks in part to Experts-Exchange, I was a great success on the contract position, moved on to a full-time benefited position based on that experience, and continue to support the contract development via VPN at home.

Just wanted to say thanks to all the excellent experts!

fragen, the problem is that you have too many partitions. You can't run a multi-boot with that many partitions.

fragen :
Good that you actually gave most of the information.
As far as I have understood your only problem is that you have used the dynamic disk(not data) in your second physical drive...be ready for a long explaination..Dynamic storage is new to Windows2000 product line of Microsoft. Dynamic storage consist of a diskthat contains volumes rather than partitions. To create a dynamic disk you must convert a basic disk into a dynamic disk. Once converted you cannot convert the disk back to basic without removing all existing volumes from the disk, further you must ensure that a minimum of 1 mb unallocated space is available on 'ur basic disk to track dynamic configuration Without it the conversion cannot proceed.Another important point to be noted is that disk configuration on a dynamic disk is stored on the disk instead of registry and is replicated to all other dynamic disk.
Windows9x,Windows Nt does not recognize dynamic disk hence the problems.
You get a windows 2000 message when you choose the Nt4 coz most probably the last os you loaded was win2000 prof and so it is the default os as in your boot.ini the line shows: default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(5)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(5)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect
further win98 is running but not recognizing the second disk....so its far from ok.  it is actually the win2000 prof. and server that are running properly as they recognize the new dynamic disk 'ur only option is to either convert back the disk to basic using diskmanagement of Windows2000 Prof. or Server or to repartition it...dont worry you will not need any third party tools or os loaders the utility 'ntldr' is just fine..and no I dont think you need to worry about the replacement of files as
the order in which you loaded the os was just right... 9x,nt,then windows2000 products though you could have loaded server last...another advice would be to always read the readme.txt and check the 'hcl' of each os... hope this solves ur prob.
One more thing the no. of partitions does not matter...

Ads, I'd seriously suggest you do some serious research before you go expousing something for which you obviously have no clue, especially as a relative newcomer here.

It's easy to cut and past comments about partitions, volumes and drives, and it's a whole other matter to know what you're talking about. Next time you tell someone that the number of partitions does not matter, you might want to check your facts first. I've written more about disks, partitions, volumes and dynamic disk protocols than you'll learn in the next 30 years.

Fragen,

You'll find all of the necessary references to multi-boot at my website, as well as on Microsoft's Knowledge Base.

You can have a disk with:

One primary partition
Four primary partitions, or
Three primary partitions and one extended partition.

Any combination of partitions is allowed as long as the total number of partitions doesn't exceed four, and there's no more than one extended partition.

The numbering of these partitions is controlled by the originally developed Intel BIOS, which isn't intuitively obvious.

I agree with Dennis whole heartedly! There are partition limitations as he explained. This is causing most of your problem right now and you need to get that rectified first.

fragen  :I would assume that since the first dsk is working OK, that you are already using extended partitions with logical partitions within that. So Ads comment is right on , and Dennis has missed the point.

If you eliminate the dynamic partition and use fdisk to create standard partitions on your 2nd drive, your problem will be solved.

I hope this helps !

I'm willing to listen to a reasonable explanation SysExpert, here's the questioners statement, "On the first disk i made 7 different partitions:", please tell me which point I have missed.

You may want to start with Chapter 6 of the Resource Kit, and when your done with that, review Q242444 and Q102873 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

for dew_associates :

7 parrtitions could easily include Logical partitions within an extended partition. What's the problem with that ??

10.06.2001 at 10:50AM PDT, ID: 6533163
What part of Chapter 6 and those two MSKB articles didn't you understand?

10.06.2001 at 11:09AM PDT, ID: 6533182

Rank: Guru

quoting from   Q102873

W is the partition number. All partitions receive a number except for type 5 (MS-DOS Extended) and type 0
(unused) partitions, with primary partitions being numbered first and then logical drives. NOTE: The first
valid number for W is 1, as opposed to X, Y, and Z which start at 0 (zero).

------------------------------

There is no limitation on the number of logical drives shown anywhere.
I personally have NT server on a logical partition 5 and it boots just fine thank you

fragen : A little verification please.

Are all your OS's booting properly with just the single hard drive installed ??

10.06.2001 at 11:24AM PDT, ID: 6533195
SysExpert, indeed that might work for you, however that in itself doesn't make it right, nor does it safeguard your OS or your data from possible loss.

You might want to review Q234048 from the MSKB.

10.06.2001 at 11:35AM PDT, ID: 6533205

Q234048 does not mention any factors that can cause data  or OS damage.

You are really reaching on this one Dennis !!!

Whatever you say Michael, whatever you say!

You might want to read the deployment white papers first though.

Hey guys the point here is to help fragen:
Sorry when I said "One more thing the no. of partitions does not matter..." I didnt mean to hurt  'ur feelings ouch!, maybe you know a lot about disks, what I did was 'presume' that Fragen knew  that a basic disk configuration has a limitation of four primary partitions and to break the 4  partition barrier he could use an extended partition which is somewhat similar to primary  partition in that they define areas of space on the physical hard drive, thus a maximum of 3  primary and one extended with number of logical drives....and I'presumed' that he had used 1  primary and 1 extended partition and loaded the os in the logical drives.... and that is  perfectly alright so far he loaded the system partition of windows 2000 in the primary and active  partition and the boot partition of the Windows 2000 in the logical drive which I again 'presume'  he did, look at the contents of drive C "boot.ini,ntdetect.com and ntldr are there.
BTW Fragen you cannot have a 4 gb Fat16 partition windows installer utility automatically  converts Fat partitions grt than 2 gb to Fat32...and NT4.0 does not recognize fat32 so check that  out good luck sorry that I missed it the first time...
If you want to access 'ur 2nd physical disk from all os you have to convert it to basic disk

10.06.2001 at 01:48PM PDT, ID: 6533314
Hy!
Thanks a lot for your many answers and suggestions.
I solved the problem as follows:
first i delete the dynamic partitions under win 2000.
Then i restart win98 and create with fdisk further basic partitions.

the boot.ini i changed the (scsi) to (multi) at winnt.

Thats all.
Everything works now and i can see and use all fat32 and fat16 partitions in every operating systems.

And it is ok that i use a 4gb fat16 partition for winnt because when i install i can create a 4gb fat16 for winnt and there is a tool available that winnt can use also fat32 partitions.

The only one i want to know is, if i can create a image of one operating system and copy it to any other partition!

And when i install other operating systems like (linux, bsb, qnx and so on) if i can also use the same boot.ini bootloader and have no more problem.

Thanks a lot for any further answer.

Pl let me know where i can get the tool you mentioned,
as for disk imaging you can use any third party tool to do that...for linux i will hopefully get back to you coz am not in touch though you could use the lilo boot you could also use third party boot loaders though there are other issues with non m'soft os.... glad ur probs were solved.

fragen, you can create the image just fine, but you can't just copy it to another partition unless you are just storing it for safekeeping.

As for other operating systems, especially Linix, you need to be very careful. You'll find what you need regarding adding Linux etc here:

I want to install FreeBSD, LINUX und QNX on my secound disk.

I find out that FreeBSD need a prim. Partition. Linux and QNX I don't know!
Therefore i create on my secound disk a prim. Partition.
But my problem now is, that this prim. Partition will get automaticle the secound volume d: after my existing prim. Partition from the first disk c:

But i have installed win98 in the letter d: and when i start the windows bootmanager (boot.ini) and choose win98 he cannot find d:\windows. But also when i change the line to e:\windows he cannot start win98.

I also tried to install further bootmanager (xfdisk.exe, bootitng.exe, wwbmu.exe) but i was not able to create a useful bootmenue. xfdisk it seems very good because i am able there do hide a partition (i thought the prim. partition on the secound disk). But it doesn't work.

Of course there is a way of solution when i delete all partition with win98, winnt and win2000 prof. and server and create first all partitions (primary and extended with logical disks) and reinstall again all my operating systems.

But what i will do when i install later FreeBSD, LInux und QNX.

Can i add these systems in the windows bootmanager (boot.ini) or which bootmanager i can use (have heard about a 'System Commander 2000').

Which installationorder i must follow of the following operating systems:

Win98
Winnt40
Win2000 professional
win2000 server
Linux
QNX
FreeBSD

Hope there can help me somebody again.
Thanks a lot for any answer.

Fragen, you've been given allot of help and advice, and even sites to review including my own, but your just not paying attention to any of it.

If you're going to use a third party boot manager, use Boot Magic from PowerQuest, its easier to use than system commander.

But, you need to do some research and understand the principles of what you intend to do.
