Subject: Dual boot menu is gone!!
Comment:
I had a dual boot with win98 and winXP pro
(each O.S. in a different partition).
I have formated C: and re-installed win98 but
I have lost the dual boot menu.
Everything seems in place in D: but I don't know
how to have the menu that allows to choose O.S.
I wouldn't like to use XOSL or any other software.
Could anybody tell me how to do it?
THANKS

You can't reinstall win98 and keept the menu. you might need to reinstall XP or repair it to get the menu back

Ok Marc here's what to do,

goto control panel>system>advanced>startup and recovery settings>system startup edit.
This allows you to edit the boot.ini file,
and edit as follows -

[Boot Loader]
timeout=30
Default=C:\

[Operating Systems]
C:\="Microsoft Windows 98"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Um, Huey, I think the guy's problem is that he can't even GET into XP as there is no longer a boot menu...so I don't think your advice will be easy to follow since it requires editing the boot menu from within XP.

Thanks Eugene, Huey and Mark. That's exactly my prob, I cannot get into XP. If there's any solution I will gladly take it, otherwise I'll have to re-install XP.

Is there a way to get into XP?

You can get into win98?
Is XP on D?
Can you get to the boot.ini via explorer?

Havent worked with XP yet so I'm not sure where this would go. I would however be interested to see how to resolve this.

Is it by default that XP won't alow for dual boot?

As the boot.ini is called from C drive you can edit it from win 98.
You will have to unhide it from folder options, open it then simply cut and paste from [Boot Loader] to fastdetect in my previous post.

I have win98 on C and winXP on D.
My folders options are as to show all hidden files, still I donŽt get to see/find the boot.ini.
Could anyone give me instructions to find it?
Once there IŽll cut&paste.

Thanks for your patience and help.

Make sure Hide protected files is unchecked as well as Show hidden files, boot.ini is on the root of C,
it will show as a text file named 'boot'
you won't find it doing a search as it has a
hidden attribute.

try to install Power Quest Boot Manager on Win 98 and use it to choose the operating system you want to boot into.

Huey,
Is there any chance I don't have it?
I got Bootlog.txt, Bootlog.prv, etc. but I don't see any boot.ini.
I am running Windows98 first edition.

SORTED OUT.
In the end this is what I have done. I have created a boot.ini file with Huey's code (just changed to 5 seconds delay). It works beautifully.
THANKS TO YOU ALL, IN PARTICULAR TO HUEY
