locking up...is it serious!?

i have a problem, but not sure hwere to start?
i always keep my computer running. my screen saver is set for 30mins. so every night after work i use to go to the computer, type in my screen saver password, and then do what i had to do. lately, my screen saver has been freezing up. how and why i am not sure, as it does this when i am not around. i tried disabling the screen saver, but this didnt help, as then it froze at the desktop. any suggestions?

*** MSCONFIG Win98/WinMe ***

First check your system resources by doing this:
Right click on "My Computer", select "Properties" and click on the
"Performance" tab. Write down the "System Resources" percentage.
If you are starting out in the 60% to 70% or low 80%, you want to
continue.

Follow the steps below, and after reboot of your computer, do the
above step again to see if you have increased "System Resources".

Below is a list of applications that should be allowed to start
for normal operations of Win98/WinMe. These applications are
integral with the operating system and are used by Windows for
maintenance and proper operation during startup and shutdown.

When you take a "check mark" out of the box next to the application,
Windows will not execute that application when you turn on your
computer. It does not mean you have deleted the application. You
may always go back and put the check mark back in.

To open the MSCONFIG application, click on "Start", "Run"
and enter "MSCONFIG" and click on the "Startup" tab.

Make sure these boxes are checked and uncheck any others. If there
are double entrys of the items listed below, check both of them. If
you recognize one of the entries to be your antivirus software, for
example NAV (Norton Antivirus), then leave it checked.

*** Windows98 ***
ScanRegistry
TaskMonitor
SystemTray
LoadPowerProfile

*** WindowsMe ***
ScanRegistry
TaskMonitor
SystemTray
LoadPowerProfile
PCHealth
*StateMgr

you might want to check your drivers and your power saving options in the control panel.

but you might want to think if you've made any changes lately.

microsoft updates or configuration changes

you might try defragmenting
also you might try deleting your swap file.

also you could edit your msdos.sys to create a bootlog every boot.
a bootlog also give info on shut down.
the next time you boot after a freze look at BOOTLOG.PRV in the root directory.

or boot to safe-mode or normal boot mode after a freeze and look at the BOOTLOG.TXT.

I can't find anything for immb.

You might go back into Msconfig > Startup Tab > and see what it says under the Command to right of immb.

example= C:\Windows\System\Restore\StateMgr.exe

Maybe it will give a better clue where to search for more info on it.

I set up a simple log where I record all activites--boots---d/l---maintenence etc...
I use note pad and put a short cut to it on my desktop. When it get's too long I delete some of it. Only takes a second to clik on it, make a note what I did and close it. Date/time is set auto for each entry.

in the msdos.sys use

BootMenuDefault=2

that's the second listed on the menu of the msdos.sys. http://www.thegorx.net/Windows/Help/Msdos.htm

also you could try regmon to see what programs are constantly running and accessing the registry.

BootMenuDefault=2

makes your computer boot to the second listing of the start menu.
as described on my msdos.sys page.

BootMenuDefault=1

is normal mode

The reason I said to do this is because why not have a log on every boot.

As for the log itself.
after a crash look at the last line of the log.
note if you create a new botlog text after a crash you'll have to look at the previous log
bootlog.prv.
