Greetings from a newbie.

On a Dell P3, 500 MHZ, 384MEG, backed up, wiped clean, reinstalled 98
everything ok except, USB ports don't work, thus printer and USB mous
don't work. Looking at control panel, have yellow question mark for:
PCI Mass Storage Controller

I had 3 USB settings,
Generic USB Hub _which had a yellow mark in front, saying it wasn'
working.
USB Root Hub
An Intel USB line, presumably related to my USB card.

Being that I had the Intel line set up, I deleted the Generic USB hub.

I don't know if the PCI mass storage controller is related to the US
problem. When I try to print I get and Epson error message saying th
USB port is disconnected.

I have reinstalled Chip drivers, i.e. intel drivers for th
motherboard. With no success.

Any and all advice would be welcomed..

Find and reinstall the drivers for your motherboard, and all addin cards
windows98 has very limited native support for addin cards, if your usb is on
a card reinstalling motherboard drivers will not help, but will ensure the
initial install didnot fail in some minor way affecting the other drivers
(very limited = zero)

Everest Home Edition(Free):

Create a new folder named Everest and extract the contents of the
download to
that folder.
Open the folder and double-click everest.exe to run the application.

If you are not sure what next step to take, other than
downloading/installing from the manufacturers support site per their
instructions.
Click the + next to Computer.
Click Summary.
On the menu bar click Report > Quick Report-Summary > Plain text.
Save to your desktop and close Everest.

Open the report on the desktop.
Delete everything from Debug on down to the bottom of the page and save.
Press CTRL+A to select all.
Press CTRL+C to copy and close out.

And/or if you wish.

How to use Registry Editor to identify an unknown PCI device
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=298837

Do not remove/delete anything in the registry unless you are versed in it
and are willing to suffer any consequences if you should remove/delete any
needed hive, key or values. Use it only to identify the unknown devices,
removing/deleting anything in the registry can/will render your machine
useless if it is needed.

Best advice is Brian's. Can't fix it unless you know what's under the hood
to begin with.
