Hi all;
Recently I had to reinstall my 98SE because of "something ?" causing it to
crash.
I've done this before without any bother, but this time, toward the end of
the reinstalltion after the system had auto restarted, I was prompted if I
wanted another option included, something about "Award Plug and Play". The
prompt was over shadowing other B & W text and was contained within a small
box. I was given a Y/N option so I selected Y. Big mistake. I really cant
remember exactly what the prompt text displayed because I haven't been able
to duplicate it.
As I mentioned everything goes W/out a hitch until the last 10 mins of
reinstallation, when the system seems to be searching for plug & play devices
then the system just hangs.
This "Award Plug & Play Bios Extension" now shows while booting and my
reasoning would be to remove it from Bios "but how". I can boot into Program
Manager by editing sys.ini but thats it. Whew sorry bout length of story.

Cheers for now
Graham

The BIOS Setup is independent of any Operating System.

Shut down the computer, and then restart it.

Look for a message as it boots which tells you which key
you need to press to enter the BIOS Setup program.

It will probably be the DEL key, but it may be F1,
or one of the other Function keys.

Just read the message and proceed as directed.

Once you are in the BIOS Setup, you can disable
the "Award Plug & Play Bios Extension"
to see if that resolves your problem.

Make sure that you select the option to "Save your changes"
as you exit from the BIOS Setup program.

Hi Hugh;
Thanks for your reply.
I've had an exhaustive search through the whole of BIOS setup menus and
cannot find any mention at all of an "Award Plug & Play Bios Extension"
entry.
This has me a little perplexed to say the least. My computer is a little old
but worked fine before I OK'd this prompt as mentioned before. Do you do
house calls LOL.
Cheers
Graham.

You may need to run the BIOS Setup and restore the Default configuration values,
or re-enter your hard drive configuration parameters.

Why does my computer hang before the operating system starts?

And, just to be safe, change your CMOS battery.

Look for references to "PnP", eg "PnP aware OS".

Hi Franc,
Thanks for your reply and interest.
Have found Bios menu "PNP/PCI configuration" but really cant make sense of it.
The letters and numbers down left side (IRQ-3.... etc assigned to "PCI/ISA
PnP" toggle to "Legacy ISA" but I never took French at college.
Have set to default but still same problem.

Cheers

Thanks Ben:
I've been working in this area for past couple of days. I seem to be getting
closer to a solution but it's still eluding me. Any more suggestions will be
gratefully taken on board. I'm really not sure if I'm meant to be enjoying

You might try a fresh install with all non-essential peripherals =
removed.
Also, go into the BIOS setup and look for something like "PNP OS".
If you find it, make sure it is set to "Yes" or "Enabled". Be sure to =
save
any changes when exiting.

Hi Ben;
I did two "over the top" installs with different options and 1 x fresh
install with "only" essential options.
I've looked very carefully for "PnP OS" or anything that resembled that.
Alas I'm still in reverse gear.
I'm beginning to wonder perhaps a memory problem ??

Try looking for "PNP OS" in the "PNP/PCI Configuration" section.
Also, see if "Resources controlled by..." is set to "Auto". If not,
change it. Be sure to save the change when exiting.

Hi Ben;
Been there a few times as of late. I had already set "Resources..." to Auto,
but I have really looked hard to find "PNP OS", checked, double checked, and
had friend look also just in case I missed it in "PNP/PCI Configuration" menu
and all other Bios menus also.
I managed to enter Program Manager and found "windows\system\msconfig.exe"
then "System Configuration Utility|View|Device Manager|System board
extension for PnP BIOS". I managed to "remove" this entry from this menu then
exit "winfile.exe". The computer then rebooted and hung for a while, then
message appeared notifying that computer was searching for new hardware and
then promptly reloaded PnP Bios Extension again before re-entering
"winfile.exe". I tried over the top install again BUT.............
I've seen a few great holiday package deals lately.

Cheers Graham

Further to previous message I refered to Pro Man as winfile.exe, sorry. Also
when I reboot after changing system.ini back to "explorer" system still keeps
hanging with error message "This program has performed an illegal operation
and will be shut down"

Thanks Galen:
Unfortunately I've been in this area, even though the menu is exactly as you
have described, it hasn't resolved my problem.
Keep the idea's coming though. I am grateful for any help.

Try running setup with the "/is" and "/p f;i" switches.

setup /is /p f;i

If this doesn't help, a look at the last few entries of the =
"c:\detlog.txt" might
be helpful.

Hi Ben;
Sorry about the wait. I have to travel for medical treatment.
Are you able to give me a few pointers on reading the "detlog.txt" file
please, or would you know of a site I could read and digest if too long to
explain.

Regards
Graham

The "c:\detlog.txt" file records devices as they are being detected, so =
if
you think setup is hanging during detection, open the file and scroll =
down
to the last entry. There may be a "c:\detlog.old" file that can be used =
for
comparison. Also, please indicate what happened when you ran setup
with the "/is" and "/p f;i" switches.

Hi Ben
I presume we're operating within "progman". If so, from the "Run" message
box command line c:\setup /is and /p f;i (switches used together and then
separately. returned message =
"Cannot find file c:\setup /is /p f;i or one of its
components"..................
When rebooting and typing the same from the c:\ prompt, returned message=
"Bad command or filename".
While viewing â??detlog.txtâ?? I see the â??detcrash.logâ?? file is missing or
invalid. I thought this may have helped me a little.
Would this file be native to Windows 98SE?
I notice the "detlog.txt /old" files are full of "failure entries also?

Thanks for your patience

Graham

If setup is hanging up during detection, the entries at the very end of =
the=20
"detlog.txt" file may indicate what device is causing the problem. When
setup is run a second time, it should bypass items that failed the first =
time.
Windows setup can be run from MS-DOS. Typically, this is done by=20
starting the computer with a boot floppy that has CD drivers. These can
be created at http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm . You would need
to type the full path, filename and switches, for example:

E:\win98\setup /is /p f;i

Whoops my apologies.
I was thinking that the installation files needed, were residing within C
drive directories.
I've got a bit more learning ahead.
Will get back to u shortly. Thanks

Hi Ben,
Computer now prompts to go into "safe mode" at startup. Once selected the
computer shuts down. I can select any of the other options but it still shuts
down before the logo appears. If I leave the startup to run its course it
will stop at the menu. Something to think about.
I'm off to bed. (1:00 am)
Cheers
Graham

If you are saying that setup completed without hanging, start the =
computer,
tap the F8 key until the startup menu appears and select "Step by step
confirmation". This should show you where the shutdown is occurring.

Sorry forgot to mention. It did not complete installation and stopped in
exactly the same spot as before but developed afore mentioned problem in
addition to original problem.
I've since done another reinstall and now back to square one.
It's looking very much like a reformat?
There are a couple of very important data files, (MS Word), I'd like to
extract from disk before I plunge but a little worried how to.
I can reinstall most others but I didn't get the chance to backup the two
files in question. Your comments or views Ben?

Graham

Use the computer you are posting with to retrieve the files. From the
posting machine, remove the ribbon cable from the CDRom/DVD drive(s) and if
you position the two PCs close together, the ribbon cable may reach the old
(troubled) hard drive. Then power up both machines. If not, pull out the
old hard drive and temporarily attach it to the ribbon cable and power
supply wires of the new machine. It does not have to be mounted in the
posting PC--you can stand the drive on its end. Then power up the new
machine use its operating system to retrieve the files you need from the old
drive.

As mentioned by another poster, one way to retrieve files is to connect =
the
hard drive to another computer.
An alternative to formatting is to use deltree on the Windows folder. =
If there
is nothing worth saving in the Windows folder or any of its subfolders, =
start=20
the computer, tap the F8 key repeatedly until the startup menu appears =
and=20
select "Command Prompt". Type "smartdrv", then "deltree c:\windows" =
and=20
confirm the deletion. Then restart using a Windows 98 boot floppy and =
run
setup from the "Win98" directory on the Windows 98 CD. You will still =
have=20
to reinstall all your applications.

Thanks Ron.
In the 11th hour I managed to avert insanity and got things sorted, for the
time being at least.
Thanks for your interest

Hi Ben;
I wrote to you the same time as I posted to Ron but obviously never got thru.
Just to say I got on top of problem, which ended up me checking for recent
progam installations and noted I had installed a program "Symantec Winfax Pro
10.0" back in October last year. The computer had been running a bit slower
than normal, and a "few" minor crashes but I put up with these.
I removed same, and ran another Win98 install, all has been OK since.
Thanks for all your help on this issue.

Regards
Graham
