Eagle Den, Oledong set for showdown

Thai fighters to slug it out for WBC crown

The protoganists for the WBC strawweight world title fight to be held between two Thais, champion Eagle Den Janlapan and former WBC youth champion, Oledong Sithsamerchai earned the greenlight yesterday at Paolo Memorial Hospital when they passed their final weigh-ins without any hitch.

They also passed the medical check-ups too with flying colours. Dr Tui Rungcharoen passed them as fully fit for today's 12-round contest to be held at the 11th Infantry Boxing Arena.

This special world title-contest is being held to celebrate His Majesty the King's 80th birthday and is being sponsored by Charoen Pokphand (CP), who was represented at the weigh-in by Dr Pong Visethpaitoon.

World strawweight champion Eagle Den Janlapan (formerly Eagle Kyowa) weighed well under the straw weight of 47.627 kilogrammes and the challenger, Oledong hit the button at 47.62 kilogrammes.

The rules for the fight were read by Indonesia's Chandru Lalvani and the officials for the bout, referee Laurentino Ramirez of Mexico, judges: Brian McMohan of Australia, Gerald Ritter of the US and Ferdinan Estrella of the Philippines were also present.

The fight is to be held at 4pm this afternoon and both fighters promised to give it their best shot.

''Good championship fight by us two Thais will no doubt be the best birthday gift to His Majesty,'' said Eagle immediately after the weigh-in and Oledong nodded in agreement.

Meanwhile on Tuesday, WBC youth light-flyweight champion, Noknoi Sithiprasert registered a third round knockout victory as he defended his title successfully against Luinika Rodolfo of Indonesia at Thabor District Nong Khai.

Noknoi won the first two rounds very easily and finished the fight in 2.30 of the third round with a a furious onslaught, sending his opponent to the canvas.

Luinika tried his best to stand up but his knees buckled, as referee Franz Marti counted him out.

In another fight on the same card, former WBC flyweight champion, Pongsaklek Wonjongkam who is preparing to win back his title from Japan's Daisuke Naito of Japan on January 28, registered a speedy knockout victory over Jack Armeza of Indonesia in the second round.
