Common Name:
Macrovision secdrv.sys Local Privilege Escalation

Date Disclosed:
10/16/2007

Expected Patch Release:
Unknown

Vendor:
Macrovision

Application:
The vulnerable driver, while developed by Macrovision, is included by default in the following installations:
- Windows XP
- Windows 2003

Description:
A zero-day vulnerability has been disclosed within a 3rd party driver included with Windows XP/2003 installations. This vulnerability allows a non-privileged user to elevate his or her privileges to Ring0 level, leading to a fully compromised host. The first report of this vulnerability described that exploits have been seen in-the-wild.

Because of certain information included with the originally vulnerability disclosure, other researchers were able to identity the vulnerable driver and identify vulnerable code within that driver. Following the identification, it only took 24 hours before a fully-functional proof-of-concept was released. Considering that this vulnerbility has been used for active exploitation, and the new disclosure of technical exploitation details, it is expected that this vulnerability will be utilized in widespread fashion for malware and targeted attacks.

Severity:
Medium

Code Execution:
Yes

Impact:
Arbitrary code execution as Ring0
Although this vulnerability requires an attacker to already be logged in or executing other code on a host, this does allow for the attacker to elevate his/her privileges to Ring0, allowing for complete system compromise no matter what credentials were used launch this vulnerability. The most common exploit scenario would be to couple an exploit for this vulnerability with a user-based exploit (file-format, client-side, etc). This allows the attacker to launch a remote attack (web-page, email, etc), to execute code that would then launch this attack, possibly elevating privileges from a remote attack to Ring0 on the victim's host.

Mitigation:
At this moment, the best form of mitigation is to disallow restricted-access users interactive logon credentials to mission-critical hosts.
