There might already be a thread about this somewhere (but I havent found it). What is going on this year for the Yamanote Halloween Train party? Last year it was 9pm at platform 13 at Shinjuku Station on Halloween. This year Halloween is a wednseday so maybe its happening this weekend? Does anybody know? It was alot of fun last year so I hope its still happening. Thanks.

Give it a miss, why don't you? Every year for some reason, foreigners who cant enough of embarrassing themselves in bars, decide to do this Train thing. All it accomplishes is re-enforcing the Japanese idea that we are all a bunch of loud, drunken dickheads.

I've heard of it in Tokyo and Osaka, but always avoid it. People I know who've participated (Japanese and gaijin alike) thought it was a lot of fun, but I'd much rather preserve the dignity of myself (and my country, for better or worse) and find fun elsewhere. My friends who teach at the big eikaiwa schools are usually forbidden to participate - by official announcements from their companies - due to all the complaints and bad publicity it gets. Sorry, no word on if/when it will take place this year.

If you are American, the best thing you can do is go and say "Australia" a lot and very loudly. Preserve America's dignity by implicating Australia please. If anyone gets suspicious, tell them you meant "Austria".

This issue has come up around halloween for the last few years. It seems that the more long term residents dislike the party, tarnished image etc. Then there are a minority who will argue until they're blue in the face that its just harmless fun. Despite all the complaints. To me it seems pretty obvious. Each time it happens, there are complaints. I think its a tradition that should be put to rest. There are other ways to enjoy halloween without disturbing the peace.

This explains why my neighbor asked if Halloween was "wild" in the US. I just looked at her kinda crazy and replied it's mainly a kids' holiday. quote:

If I found myself in Tokyo for Halloween, I would ride Yamanote for a loop. (In costume) While any vandalism is out of the question, it does seem like harmless fun and a laugh for gaijin & native.

But i think a few years ago I wouldn't have cared. I wonder why that is? Maybe it is the same with the locals. First timers who see it might laugh, but those that see it year after year get sick of it. I have had plent of fun on trains with various drinking games me and my mates play on different lines, but that usually invloves only about 10 of us at the most. Is there a law against drinking in public? Because if there was, that would be one way the cops could stop it if they really wanted to. Do the cops or station guys ever say anything to the people on the train? How many people normally go and how many carriages do you all fill up?

A lot of folk just seem to think that Halloween is the time were anything and everything goes and they can point at the calandar for their excuse. I don't even go down town in my hoem town on the 31st.

Not sure about that, I see Japanese (usually blue collar men) drinking on the train all the time, but they usually just sit quietly with their drink and dont cause a problem. This may be one of the laws the cops ignore as long as your not being a nuisance.

Yeh...that's the same with back home (Australia). We have laws against it but people do it all the time. If it is out of hand, the police have the power to do something about it, but if it is just a few beers in the park or something, they don't really do anything about it. If there is such a law then the police hae the power to stop something like this, which I have no doubt would happen back home. If there is no such law, then they are pretty much powerless I guess.

Wow...what a bunch of boring people. I guess I will have to go to a generic izakaya and then karaoke for the "nijikai". Last year it was not a problem, Japanese people were there too, and bystanders thought it was funny. The police came at the end but they didnt try to break it up or arrest anyone, we all just left. So I guess the answer to my question is that none of you are coming. quote:

Frank, the point here is that it DOES piss off normal people on the train, and it presents us foreigners as a buch of drunken loud idiots. Yes, salarymen ride trains loaded all the time, but not in mobs and they usually sit quietly (albeit smelling like S***). This is not a green light to do the same. Its public transportation and people have a right not to be subjected to this. What's the problem with celebrating in a bar? I know there are lots of parties where you don't have to worry about being a diplomat for your country.
