Karzai "ready to talk" to Taliban
Sat, 29 Sep 2007 21:22:18
Karzai wants negotiations with Taliban "for peace and security."
Afghan president offers to meet with Taliban's top leader and give the militants high positions in government to end the rising insurgency.

President Hamid Karzai said Saturday that if peace could only be brought to Afghanistan through talks, "we're ready to do it."

Karzai said he has contacts with Taliban militants through tribal elders but that there are no direct and open government communication channels with the fighters.

The President said he is "ready to talk" to Taliban top leader Mullah Omar and even ready to give government posts to the Taliban if they renounced violence.

This is his most direct invitation yet to Taliban leaders, with previous invitations of talks vague about whether they were included.
