HTTPS Usage

Since early 2015, we have measured the prevalence of HTTPS connections, thanks to Chrome users who share usage statistics. These metrics allow us to better understand Chrome users' HTTPS experiences and inform us as we work to improve Chrome's user interface. The graphs below show how HTTPS usage is increasing over time.

Usage Overview

Secure web browsing through HTTPS is becoming the norm. Desktop users load more than half of the pages they view over HTTPS and spend two-thirds of their time on HTTPS pages. HTTPS is less prevalent on mobile devices, but we see an upward trend there, too.

Percentage of pages loaded over HTTPS

Fragment navigations, history push state navigations, and all schemes besides HTTP/HTTPS (including new tab page navigations) are not included.

Percentage of browsing time spent on HTTPS websites

Users spend different amounts of time on different sites, so we measure time spent on HTTPS pages. Users of Chrome on desktop spend a larger amount of time on HTTPS pages than on HTTP pages. This rate is increasing across both mobile and desktop.

If a user has multiple tabs open in Chrome, metrics come only from the active foreground tab. Schemes other than HTTP or HTTPS (such as chrome://) are not included.

Around the World

HTTPS usage is growing faster in some countries than others. For example, the prevalence of HTTPS has increased quickly in Russia compared to Japan, which has seen slower growth of HTTPS usage. How did we select these countries?
