Such a tragedy. I was born around the same time as the Polytechnique shooting at a nearby hospital. There were several anonymous calls made to hospitals the days following the tragedy from people saying they'd kill women and newborn girls.

The night I was born, there had been one anonymous call that made the maternity ward to be on lock down. My mom was 8 cm dilated when nurses rushed through the rooms to remove the bracelets from newborns (that indicate their genders), strip down newborn girls and put them in blue blankets, blue hats and remove the names. Everyone was terrified, my mom (who didn't know if I was a girl or a boy) said she hoped so so hard that I was a boy and cried when she found out I was a girl because she was scared of what would happen in case of a shooting.

Fuck.

I'd never heard this.

Yup! All my newborn pictures were taken with blue hats and blue everything. I can't even begin to imagine being in labor and having to worry about all that.

Wow, I'm a Montréaler and I never heard of this either. How terrifying. But wonderful quick thinking by the nurses and support staff.

You realize they put your name on tags and that you might have been mixed up with another baby right ?

Just kidding !

I'm surprised this has so few upvotes and comments. I mean, I understand that Reddit is generally US-centric but this was a tragedy just across the border of your northern neighbours, where a mass shooter specifically targeted women. Most of the young women murdered that day were between 21-25 years old, with the oldest victims being 29 and 31. They died because they were women studying engineering.

My mom had graduated from engineering school a couple years before this happened and it still gives me chills to think about how easily something like this could've happened to her. Even without being literally murdered, she has still experienced tons of disgusting overt sexism in her career but it makes her so happy to see young female engineers graduating in bigger numbers even with all they have to put up with in the industry
