5804 Esperantists speaking Esperanto for 8 years.
Imagine if there was one language that everyone could speak.
Imagine if there was a language without any irregularities or exceptions.
Imagine if there was a language that didn’t belong to any state or ethnicity.
Imagine if there was a language designed to be as easy as possible to learn.
Well, such a language exists and it’s called Esperanto! Esperanto is a language invented in 1887 by Ludwik Zamenhof with the intention of being a universal language to promote communication and cooperation across borders. It was created by taking words from the vocabulary of the main Indo-European languages, with the intention of being easy to learn. It has a very simple grammar and words can be easily constructed using prefixes and suffixes, like LEGO blocks. You can find more information about Esperanto here!
At /r/Esperanto, we aim to be the main hub on the internet about Esperanto. Here you will find blogs, articles, songs, videos, books, discussions, learning material, memes, podcasts, jokes and more! We pride ourselves on having a diverse and international community and we’re open to all levels, from fluent speakers to complete beginners. Our community is very welcoming and helpful, and we have a stickied question thread where learners can ask everything and anything about the language. The sub is multilingual, with the rule being that all posts must be either “in or about Esperanto.”
Here are a couple of popular posts to give you a flavour of /r/Esperanto. We have funny comics, Hello by Adele sung in Esperanto, a poster that summarises Esperanto and why to learn it, how quick the Duolingo course is, a cute picture of animals with their Esperanto words, a historical propaganda poster from the Spanish Civil War and a playlist of TED Talks with Esperanto subtitles.
The best places to learn Esperanto are the websites Duolingo which has more than half a million users after only a year (a course for Spanish speakers will soon be available) and lernu! (available in roughly 30 languages).
Come join us for our 8th Anniversary on November 5th! Everyone is welcome, from users of the language, to learners to people who are just curious.

Ĉu vi povas paroli iomete pri kiel Esperanto komenciĝis?
Can you tell us a little how the language of Esperanto got started?
Do, li decides krei sian propran lingvon, kiun estus neŭtrala kaj facile lernebla.
/u/TeoKajLibroj: Well back in the 1880s, a man named Zamenhof lived in a town called Bialystok (now in Poland, then in the Russian Empire). The town was divided between Germans, Poles, Russians and Jews, each with their own language. There was frequent conflict between the groups and they generally lived separate lives.
Zamenhof believed that the inability to communicate was keeping these groups apart and fostering suspicion. He felt that if there was a common language, people could talk to each other and find out that they're not all that different. At the time some were pushing for a Russification while others wanted Polish to be the main language, but these languages carried too much political baggage and no community wanted another's languages forced on them.
So Zamenhof decided that the common language would have to be neutral, a language that didn't belong to one ethnic group. He considered Latin, but it was too difficult for people to learn and so old that a lot of words would have to be invented to describe modern things.
So he decided to create his own language, which would be politically neutral and as easy as possible to learn.
Care to share any personal details about your life off-reddit, gasp does Esperanto play a part?
/u/Ashmya: Nu, mi plejparte estas anonimulo interrete, sed mi povas diri ĵus pasintsemajnfine mi iris al okazo, kiu nomiĝas la Aŭtuna Renkontiĝo de Esperanto kaj tio verŝajne estis la plej bona maniero uzi kolumbosemajnfinon. Mi vojaĝis al norda New York, umis, tri tagojn parolis Esperante, kaj eĉ unufoje renkontiĝis tie kun amiko, kiun mi konis interrete dum pli ol jaro.
/u/Ashmya: Well, I'm mostly anonymous online, but I can say just a weekend ago I went to a thing called the Aŭtuna Renkontiĝo de Esperanto (Fall Gathering of Esperanto), and that was probably the best way to spend a Columbus Day weekend. I traveled to upstate New York, hung out, spoke Esperanto for three days straight, even met a friend I knew online for more than a year there for the first time. There were many people from Quebec and the region. But mostly, I speak Esperanto online on Twitter, Discord, etc. and of course Reddit because the Esperanto community is dispersed throughout the world. I became fluent solely by using Esperanto on the Internet.
Lerni ĉi tiun lingvon, ĉu estas malsimila je angla parolanto provanta lerni la italan? hazarde elektita lingvo
To learn this language, is it any different than an English person trying to learn Italian? random language chosen
/u/yourselfiegotleaked: As someone who actually spent 3 years in highschool studying Italian, it's very different. It comes to you much more quickly. I found myself getting way ahead in Esperanto, while I could barely understand what my teacher was saying in Italian. The simpleness of the language makes it very rewarding to learn since you can start speaking and putting it to use after a few months, whereas it could take years for other languages.
Kiun konsilon vi volas diri al iu ajn kiuj volas lerni Esperanton.
What tips can you give to anyone wanting to learn Esperanto.
Helpos kaj lerni la lingvon kaj doni kialon lerni la lingvon.
/u/TeoKajLibroj: The best way to learn a language is to join its culture. Don't just learn from a textbook, listen to music, find people to talk with, watch videos etc. It will both help you learn the language and give you a reason to learn it. It really helps with motivation.
/u/Ashmya: The best way to learn Esperanto is to have the most fun you can while doing it! Use Duolingo as a starting off point, but don't take it as infallible. Complement it with resources from other places such YouTube (disclaimer: I'm friends with that guy), lernu, BaBaDum, and many more of the resources listed on the /r/Esperanto sidebar. When you know a basic amount of Esperanto, try chatting with people on Telegram and the /r/Esperanto Discord chat! Most Esperanto speakers like helping people new to the language.
Tell us a little about the /r/Esperanto community?
/u/yourselfiegotleaked: The community is pretty interesting, because we're less single-minded than other Esperanto communities. You'll see people getting along and helping each other out, and sometimes you'll see arguments. Our community has one of the most interesting dynamics in Esperantujo I would say.
/u/hatefullyemployed signing off, I'll be lurking around at /r/Esperanto!
