EDIT: Thanks to Sir_fappington1 for the following advice for any who have been softbanned..

"Remember if you get softbanned, make a new steam account, gameshare it to the new account and play, your saves are in %appdata%"

You need to make a new character first and then quit out and go into load menu and put the save into the file and then load up the character (it will say its the new one but its your old one)

                  What actually happens is that they get sent to the title screen and receive a "Invalid game data" warning. They aren't banned just yet but they have to restore their game to a previous state as the character was clearly modified with some sort of cheat, which is a violation that will be penalized.

                  If the review detects something suspicious the actual ban will happen.

                  That's not actually how it works at all. I've completely reinstalled my game and deleted my save in %appdata% after being invaded by a hacker doing this exact same thing; I was still banned in the end.

                  Once you get the 'Invalid Data' warning, it's a coin flip on whether or not you're banned or not.

                                I was helping my friend through Farron Keep when this guy invaded. He seemed to appear right next to the host and I got instantly disconnected from the game. He hit my friend once and then he was "teleported" to Firelink with extra souls and looked as though he had used a dragon torso stone on himself.

                                Of course he didn't have any save backups not knowing this was going to happen, so he's had to delete the save and start a new game to avoid being banned. Whoever this guy is he's a horrible horrible person. Cheat on your own, I don't even care but don't go and do this to innocent players...

                                  I can stop all of this as I did in Dark Souls I developing the DS PVP Watchdog. I can prevent these effects to be applied, I can prevent him from giving you souls, or statuses; but in order to do so I would need to inject code (as I did in DS1), and that would get you detected and flagged.

                                  I've been reverse engineering this game for a few weeks and injecting code. This has not gotten me banned.

                                  If you're going to make some sort of mod to do this, follow a simple rule: never ever replace code, use object based virtual method hooks instead (not .rdata function replacement, but actual object vtable pointer replacement). Get crafty. The code should be shellcode or manually mapped.

                                  What makes you think it will get people banned? Sig-scanning for your code once it gets popular? I highly doubt From's anti-cheat does that. If you're trying to get around writing some sort of memory to whatever the effects are tied to, there's probably something crafty you can do like a virtual method hook that checks a return address and stack walks for certain parameters, then stop the code from being executed.

                                  Temporarily modifying variables that could affect the execution path of a function would be a good way to go about doing this too.

I detected hackers and allowed you to remove them from your world (if hacker was a phantom) or immediately go back to your own world (if hacker was the host). I work as a game engine programmer, and pretty much every time players say they're "raising awareness of the problem to get it fixed faster" it leads to mayhem for everyone (players and developers) followed by a knee-jerked "fix" that more often than not has other consequences. The best thing you can do is notify the developer of the problem, and explicitly say you're giving them a deadline for fixing it (say 3-4 weeks) before you will publicly disclose it so others can exploit it.

                                                                                        Keeping backups is the safest way to prevent yourself from getting softbanned by other hackers. Go to (replace drive letter with your respective one) C:/Users/YOURUSERNAME/AppData/Roaming/DarkSoulsIII and there will be a folder with string of letters and numbers. In that folder is your save. Copy and paste that somewhere in order to back up your character from now on.

                                                                                        The game will warn you if your account is flagged to eventually get banned (game will say that your save file is corrupt), so if you do not get this message at any point, you are safe.

                                                                                          I'm on console and one of my favorite game ever has also been ruined by cheating on the PC side (Rainbow Six Siege). Now Dark Souls 3 as well has issues? It's very aggravating how all these games are being released with so many vulnerabilities in the first place. It feels like the developers know the problem at the start and their cost-benefit-analysis on the subject is not worth their time with the expense of a couple thousands hard core players as long as they keep the larger casual base happy. This guy is an ass but the root of the problem is the developers half-assing their products. Why not take a couple of months more to release a polished product. Awareness has to be raised, especially from the PC side.
