This is exactly what LvG did with Mourinho when they were at Barca.

He let Mourinho run the whole cup campaign on his own with minimal supervision (Mourinho won the trophy).

It's less common now but it used to be a pretty common manager-assistant dynamic through most of the 20th century.

Clearly we can all see LVGs "tactics" and "philosophy" are a total disaster for our club and he is not capable in any shape or form of being trusted with either our squad or our transfer money. Why on earth would we keep him in any capacity rather than giving him the sack like we should have done last autumn?

Because it would undermine his authority. What if they win lots of games in style with one manager and not with the other?

It's likely that there is a shifted amount of responsibility in the preparation for less important games, but not significantly enough that the manager needs to not attend or manage.
