I saw "Midnight Special," and it was fantastic! It's definitely the best movie I've seen in a while. It was definitely not the movie in the trailers, but that's okay. It's also one of those films that I think will take a couple of watchings to fully parse and digest, which is equally awesome as I now have a solid excuse to watch it again.

I also bought a bonsai from this roadside bonsai seller who I think is certain that I'm going to kill my new bonsai friend in the next three days. He was this young Japanese guy who seemed really, really into his plants, and I felt a bit bad separating this poor, innocent bonsai from this man who clearly loves it so much. So I sang the only Japanese song I know ("Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes") to it in the hopes that it won't up and die in the next few days. I have high hopes for my new plant friend.

I saw the Martian this weekend. It was pretty good! Some great moments, some great low brow humor on Mars. Great looking. Would recommend!

I've been wanting to see it, but last time I was out at the cinema, my request for sci-fi got vetoed, which is also why I'm so excited that I got to see Midnight Special yesterday. I'll definitely check out The Martian, though!

Oh so midnight special is SciFi? What's the hook of the movie?

This is the trailer, and while it doesn't really capture what made the movie so spectacular (and which I don't necessarily want to spoil here because it is a slow realisation), it does show generally what kind of movie it is. It's definitely the sort of movie that you'll like more if you don't like everything explained and if you like puzzling things out as you go.

Okay folks. I need some help.

In the first Harry Potter movie (sorcerer's/philosopher's stone) there is a scene that makes no sense to me. So it's Halloween night and they're at the feast. However, Hermione is off crying in the bathroom cause Ron was a dick. Remember this part?

Then we get 'Troll in the dungeon, Troll in the dungeon!' Which was a distraction so Mr. V could go nab a Stone. Ron and Harry go to a women's restroom looking for their friend. Who is in there crying.

They save her and then the teachers arrive. Now...

WHY DID HERMIONE HAVE TO LIE SAYING THAT "SHE WAS LOOKING FOR THE TROLL, BUT RON AND HARRY SAVED HER"???? SHE COULD HAVE JUST SAID, 'I WAS IN THE BATHROOM AND ROM AND HARRY KNEW I DIDN'T KNOW, SO THEY SAVED MY ASS.' WHICH WAS COMPLETELY TRUE. HER unnecessary LIE COST THEM POINTS DAMNIT!

She just spent a couple of hours crying in the bathroom and got attacked by a troll. I think proper english is impressive by itself.

Well, she was in the bathroom for a really long time. She could not have known how long a time she needed to account for to the teachers. Did they evacutae the area quickly or slowly? Does she need to own up to being in the bathroom for a damn hour crying over hurt feelings, or is it believable that she was just in there for a normal amount of time and missed the announcement and lightning fast evacuation?

Hell I think she could have gotten away with saying she was using the restroom. Who questions the straight A student about their reasons for length of poo. Or hell she could have told the truth and made Ron and Harry look like bigger Heroes.

[–]Emergency_WardMight not be useless in the Middle Ages 2ポイント3ポイント  (1子コメント)

Sure, she could have, but her lie is important for (ironically) character development and friendship building. Still dumb, I agree.

[–]georgeguy007"Wigs lead to world domination" - Jared Diamon 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

But like, he still could have shown thanks to her friends for saving her. And her lie is never really talked about again. I'm just not sold damn it!

Well Hermione prides herself in knowing everything, so maybe she didn't want to admit she didn't know about the troll? In the first book the characters are like 11, and 11 year old logic isn't necessarily the most sound.

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

Not to mention, she doesn't want to admit that anyone got to her and made her cry.

[–]georgeguy007"Wigs lead to world domination" - Jared Diamon 2ポイント3ポイント  (2子コメント)

Hmmmmmmmmmm that's passable, but damn she made her house team lose imaginary points! She even went out of her way to make them lose points.

It just doesn't add up!

[–]JackalSkull¡Las Malvinas son de Antártica! 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

She wasn't necessarily going out of her way to cost them points; the points system is entirely at the faculty's whims, so depending on the personality of the teachers on hand, doing something a dangerously stupid as actively trying to confront a troll could actually gain them points (Lockhart for example, even though he wasn't in book 1). Although, after typing that I realize that that that argument is stupid because they had been at school for two months and should know none of the current teachers would reward that kind of stupidity. I guess it just boils down to some kind of plot inconsistency.

Someone get Emma Watson or JK Rowling on the line. We're taking this to the Top!
