Hotel Splendid: Feb 25- Mar 6 at Namsan Art Center

2/16/2011

A Testimony Poetry that describeS a painful history: "Hotel Splendid"

During World War Two, 200,000 'comfort women', mainly Korean, were abducted by the Japanese army as sex slaves.

Acclaimed American playwright Lavonne Mueller has collaborated with Cho-In Theatre in this production, which pays homage to the women who suffered in this little known atrocity.

Set in a 'comfort station', the sinisterly named Hotel Splendid, we meet four women and the kamikaze pilot who falls in love with one of them.

We are witness to the horrors that are visited on them and the strength, dignity and even humor with which they endure them. Performed in Cho-In Theatre's signature physical style, it is performed in Korean with English subtitles for the original text.

A powerful production of extraordinary beauty and surprising hope.

10% of the proceeds will go to the House of Sharing.

Upcoming Events
955th Weekly Wednesday Protest on Feb 2nd
2 Feb 2011
The Weekly Wednesday Demonstration focuses upon seven demands:
1. That the Japanese government admits the compulsory drafting of Korean women as Military Sexual Slavery by Japan.
2. That an official apology will be made for this.
3. That all the atrocities will be fully disclosed.
4. That a Memorial will be built for the victims.
5. That the survivors or their bereaved families will be compensated
6. That the facts and truth about Military Sexual Slavery by Japan will be taught in Japanese history classes so that such inhumanities are not repeated.
7. Punish the war criminals!

Every Wednesday from 12pm-1pm since January 8, 1992, the halmoni & supporters protest in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul.

The weekly protests have been the central force in the process of resolving the issue of Japanese Military Sexual Slavery. Although the Japanese government has still not taken responsibility for their wartime wrongs, the weekly protests affirm the human rights of the survivors and show them and the Japanese government that the international community hears their cries for justice.

***DIRECTIONS***
To get to the embassy, the quickest way is from Anguk station (Line 3) exit 6. Walk straight out of the exit and as you walk towards the main street of Insadong, you will see the Somerset hotel ahead of you (it's a big building, can't miss it!) Pass the street going into Insadong and cross the intersection with the streetlight. Walk straight about 5 minutes and turn left when you see the Somerset Hotel. The Japanese embassy is across the street from the front entrance of the hotel. There is a Japanese flag flying from the top of the building.

***STILL LOST?!?!***
Members of the House of Sharing's International Outreach Team will be at Anguk station, exit 6 at 11.45am to meet people who don't know the way!

Come out & support the halmoni!
