1/19/06 - The poster of the drama "Interlocked Branches" is released. The theme of the poster is "The splendor instantaneous love". With the blue sky at the background, Choi Ji Woo and Jo Han Sun show their happy expressions. This romantic movie portrays that the main characters Hye Won (혜원, played by CJW) and Min Soo (민수, played by JHS) individually overcomes the fear of love and become a couple. The debut of the movie is scheduled in March.

Sabi ko dapat sinabi niya, my daughter loves you. Hehehe...Sa hotel daw niya nakita, sa Rigo Royal Hotel (?) at breakfast ata yun or lunch. Sabi pa nga niya, lahat daw ng kinukuha niya, kinukuha din ni Jiwoo like the miso soup. Sabi ko, feeling ka ha. Hehehe...

Sabi ko sa kanya, bawala ng magsinungaling, sabihin niya kung si Jiwoo yun, si Jiwoo nga daw talaga (Jodi pa nga tawag niya eh...)

Ji Woo is the younger of two children, with an elder brother. She lives with her parents Choi WoonYong(52), Yun GilJa(50), and her two years older brother who attends graduate school. She recently gained a sister-in-law with her brother’s marriage.

When Ji-Woo’s mother was pregnant, she dreamt of picking apples from an apple tree and holding them in her dress.

Because of her father who served the military, she had to move around often. Since 6th grade, she lived in Pusan.

She has a short breath and tends to speak quickly. Her speech is faster than her thinking sometimes and gets her tongue-tied, making her pronunciation slip. Recently, she is adjusting her pronunciation by playing her voice back through a new audio recorder.

Appeal
She has a facial mask that portrays both metropolitan and traditional image simultaneously. People say she looks good with her hair split in the center.

Preferred fashion
Avoiding extravagant clothing, she likes to wear simple and modern clothing with pants. When not filming, she usually wears jean pants and t-shirts.

Always visits the powder room before filming.

She works out with a hula-hoop and a running machine at home. She doesn’t like playing or watching sports that much.

Debut work and Isabelle Adjani Contest
After her debut drama ‘War and Love’, she entered the ‘Isabelle Adjani Contest’, which was open for anyone to try. Because she was already a celebrity, entering the contest was a bit embarrassing. However, she couldn’t help it, because winning the ‘Isabelle Adjani Contest’ meant she could star as one of the character in an upcoming movie called ‘Park BongGhon Runaway Incident’, prepared by ‘Movie World’. Eventually, she was picked as the most Isabelle Adjani look-alike. Although she participated in the ‘Isabelle Adjani Contest’ to receive a role in the movie ‘Park BongGohn Runaway Incident’, calls from several broadcast televisions came as well. One of the hottest TV dramas currently being shown is "Rondo," which airs every Sunday at 9 p.m. on TBS. The drama marks the first appearance in a Japanese TV series for Choi Ji-woo, the 30-year-old South Korean actress best known for her heroine role in "Winter Sonata." She co-stars with Japanese star Yutaka Takenouchi, 35.

With the big-name match-up, it was inevitable that "Rondon" would gain most of the media attention. It has been announced that the drama will be aired in China, Thailand, Malaysia and four other countries in Asia.


TBS is pulling out all stops to promote the drama as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations this year. The first episode earned a 20% rating and it seems everything is going well ... on the surface.

The reality is very different, says one of the program's crew. "The atmosphere on the set is as bad as it could be," said the staffer. "With Ji-woo, we rarely start on time, so everyone, including Takenouchi, has to wait for her, sometimes for as long as two hours. But she makes sure that she gets her time off while in Japan and is traveling all over the place from hot springs to Disneyland. I think she periodically goes back to South Korea as well. Honestly, I cannot understand her."

There also seem to be problems of miscommunication and cultural differences in the process. Another crewmember points out the disharmony with the South Korean staff.

"Choi brought 10 staff with her from South Korea," said the crewmember. "Basically, the way we work is different from the way they are used to working. TBS is known for its long hours of rehearsals, but such a practice is incomprehensible for them. They once yelled at us not to make Ji-woo do the same things over and over. This is the first time for us to collaborate with production crew from overseas. We hope that we overcome our differences in the end."

While the Japanese hosts gave Choi the best possible treatment, this caused some tension for the staff and other actors. "Choi brought her stylist from Korea, which TBS paid for. She also brought her wardrobe from Korea, so she gets her own fitting room while everyone else shares an assigned stylist and a fitting room provided by the station," grumbled one of the crew.

Since her arrival, TBS has done all it could to welcome the South Korean star. The red carpet was rolled out at the press conference, which is unheard of. Her guarantee is also said to be exceptional. The Korean media report that it is higher than Choi's most highest paid Japanese counterpart, Yukie Nakama.

If TBS is providing such VIP treatment for her, one would think that the station should be able to maintain some order. But things aren뭪 that easy in reality. "When the two sides reached the agreement, the president of TBS, Hiroshi Inoue, was to meet with the actress. He even went to get a haircut for the meeting. But he was let down by Ji-woo's mood swing that day when she canceled the meeting," said a TBS worker.

Another point of contention, said the TBS staffer, is that Choi wanted to be able to cook during her stay in Japan. "So instead of reserving a hotel room, the station rented an apartment for 1 million yen a month. But she has been dining out most of the time. She makes the staff search for a good place to eat. Even when her mother was in town, she dined out."

Though the opening episode earned a good rating of 20%, the second episode went down to 15%.

"We started filming in November, and if things had gone smoothly, we would be done filming six episodes by now," said a crew member. "But we are still filming the 4th episode. We are all tired that things aren't going as planned. On top of that, we are getting pilloried for not earning a high rating and thus not being able to recoup the costs of the drama to the station." It was a hot issue in Korea the other day when the media reported that Jang Dong Gun (of the popular drama All About Eve and the all-time box-office hit Taegukgi) and Choi Ji Woo (Winter Sonata, Stairway to Heaven) got married secretly. It was kinda surprising since they are not currently working together, nor do they have any project in the near future.

Choi Ji Woo went on television denying the rumor, which was also reported by the Japanese media. And Jang Dong Gun issued a statement on his official website regarding the issue.

Choi Ji-woo Sets her Sights on Hong Kong

With the Japanese mega-hit drama "Rondo" under her belt, Korean star Choi Ji-woo is set to make a foray into Hong Kong.


As the first episode of "Rondo," the special drama created in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS), boosted the network's ratings to 20 percent as it took to the air on Sunday, Choi Ji-woo prepared for her visit to Hong Kong to attend the opening ceremony of a new Christian Dior shop at the Festival Walk in Kowloon this Wednesday.

The Hong Kong press speculated that the grand opening ceremonies will be packed with reporters and fans gathering to see Choi, as her popularity soared in Hong Kong after the drama "Stairway to Heaven" was aired in the territory. Choi has been active as an Asian model for Christian Dior cosmetics since March of last year.

This is Choi's first official visit to Hong Kong, which makes it all the more exciting for the press and fans, according to the papers there. A Hong Kong-based newspaper, Mingpao, reported that Choi Ji-woo is to be styled "marvelously" by a special Christian Dior-affiliate beautician using the latest products from the company for her appearance to cut the ribbon. The paper also added a detailed introduction to the shop, which is being touted as "the first beauty concept shop in the world."

The 120 minute-long special first episode of "Rondo" captivated Japanese viewers who applauded that the first episode was so well-made that it "seemed like a movie." In Japan, soap operas whose first episode brings in 20 percent or higher ratings are classified as "mega hit" as opposed to a mere "hit."

The ratings for the premier of the show that kicked-off the Korean Wave in Japan in the first place, "Winter Sonata," were a mere 9 percent of the viewing market, and those of the first episodes of "Stairway to Heaven" and "Beautiful Days" also were incapable of achieving more than 10 percent. When that is considered, the first episode of "Rondo" which raked in 20 percent ratings is a laudable accomplishment. Choi says her hard work is paying off, but "I'm not going to let myself be content with the ratings of the first show. I want to incite a change that is the localization of the Korean Wave in Japan, and I'm going to giving it all I've got till the very end"

One of the leading figures of the Korean Wave in Japan, the actress Choi Ji-woo, is generating renewed frenzy in the island country with her upcoming appearance in a drama specially produced to mark the 50th anniversary of Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS). It goes on air on Jan. 15. Walls in every neighborhood in Tokyo are plastered with posters featuring Choi side-by-side with the male Japanese lead Yutaka Takenouchi.

Japan's fashion and celebrity magazines have kicked into overdrive with special articles on the drama, many running features on the shooting locations. This is the first time Choi has been involved in a Japanese production, while Takenouchi is making his return to the small screen after a 10-year absence. TBS has embarked on a PR blitz to hype the drama and its own 50th anniversary. Little wonder then that there is a major buzz surrounding the production. TBS will air “Rondo”, as the miniseries is called, in a primetime slot, 9 p.m. on Sunday. It has invested US$12 million in the drama at a cost of more than $1 million per episode, in itself a sensation in Japan.


The Japanese media expects “Rondo” with its combination of top stars and a massive budget to generate a similar phenomenon as the drama “Winter Sonata” that set off the Korean Wave. Experts anticipate that the drama will help stave off a backlash against the popularity of Korean pop culture, which some patriots feel has come at the expense of home-grown entertainment, by combining talent from both countries. Deals with nine Asian countries have been completed, recouping almost all of the stellar production costs. Japanese experts foresee that the DVD and original soundtrack -- which includes a song by Korean singer Lee Seung-chul -- will rake in hundreds of billions of won in profits.

TV actress and hallyu star Choi Ji-woo has reportedly been distressed over the low viewer ratings of her TV drama "Rondo," currently being aired in Japan. She is still recognized in Japan as a leading South Korean actress and known as the "queen of tears." But the viewer ratings of Rondo have been on the decline, causing consternation among all the people involved in its production.
Rondo was filmed last year by TBS TV of Japan with a budget of 12 billion won. Even before it was filmed, the drama generated quite a buzz and attracted much public attention both in Japan and South Korea. Many people expected it to be a smash hit when its first episode achieved 20 percent viewer ratings.

But despite its initial success, the viewer ratings of Rondo have been on the decline, currently hovering around the ten-percent level. The drama recorded 15.8 percent during the first week of February (Jan. 30-Feb. 5), but dropped to 14.8 percent during the second week of February (Feb. 6-12), and continued its spiral downward.

Some people attribute the lower ratings of Rondo to its storyline. They say that the drama is too complicated and not very engaging to the audience, adding that the plot is very similar to that of the Hong Kong film "Infernal Affairs," which revolves around a criminal gang.

Meanwhile, Japanese fans who still remember Choi as "Jiwoo Hime," the female lead character of the TV drama "Winter Sonata," are criticizing the drama, saying that although it is interesting, Choi's image in the drama is very different from that in "Winter Sonata."

I like the way choi ji woo doing her role in all the tv series i already finish watching. She's really great actress and cute too. I wish that on my coming birthday i can met her personally here and i can be with her. Actually i don't experience to have a meaningful and memorable since before because u know my parents are separated when we are just a kid. I didn't experience lots of happy moments too with other people. I always pray for that every time im going to sleep. I hope that god will make it come true. Choi ji woo u know what u give me encouragement and inspiration in my life every time im watching ur tv series at home. According to a report on the "Reality and Prospect of Korean Dramas on Japanese TV" published by Korean Broadcasting Institute on Tuesday, the number of Japanese terrestrial broadcasters that have included Korean dramas in their programming stood at 36 as of February, which is almost a 50 percent decrease from the 64 of last February. The report attributes the ebb in popularity with terrestrial broadcasters to the fact that no Korean stars have emerged to fill the shoes of Bae Yong-joon or Choi Ji-woo, combined with the fact that Korean dramas are steadily losing their competitive edge to Chinese and Hong Kong dramas in terms of price. By contrast, the number of Korean dramas aired on Japanese satellite TV channels have increased from 5 last year to 9 on BS and from 45 to 55 on CS. Kim Yung-duk, who conducted the research, said that the reduction in the number of Korean dramas aired on Japanese terrestrial TV channels -- which resulted mainly from the challenge offered up by Chinese dramas -- as well as the weakened price competitiveness of Korean dramas clouds the prospects for Korean dramas in Japan. He stressed that Korea needs to come up with measures to secure channels to air Korean dramas by, for instance, starting a new channel in Japan or investing capital in the Japanese channels.

In a desperate bid to stifle rumors started by "netizens" that they are to marry, South Korean movie stars Jang Dong-gun and Choi Ji-woo have reported the matter to Internet police.



By the end of June, the Web was awash with messages claiming Jang and Choi had already reserved a hotel for their wedding ceremony and had even decided the honeymoon destination.

Some "netizens" also posted messages alleging parents on both sides met each other to discuss the wedding details.

Although the star actor and actress paid no attention to the stories at first, they were moved to break their silence and take action when the rumors continued to spread.

In addition to turning to the police, who have been asked to help identify the origin of the stories, both Jang's and Choi's agents also made public announcements ¡ª maintaining that while the stories are no more than online rumors, they are in effect privacy violations, which severely affect the stars' personal lives.

This is not the first time Choi has been the subject of marriage rumors.

Press reports earlier this year alleged she was set to marry the boss of a film company this July, and more recently a series of well-publicized marriage "scandals" linked Choi with numerous Korean actors. Both Jang and Choi contend their on- and off-screen relationship in recent years has been purely platonic. They last appeared on screen together six years ago, a working relationship which did not produce any love affair.

Tokyo, Mar 17: Hair and street fashion hit the catwalk in the annual "Hair Colouring Splash 2006" event in Tokyo.

Eight Japanese hair colourists and designers from Tokyo's top hair salons presented their latest hair colour styles mixed with the latest of Japanese fashion.

Themes ranged from street chic and glam girl to "erotic-cool", many inspired by western blonde hair and mixed with Japan's Harajuku girl culture made famous by U.S. pop star Gwen Stefani.

Practically all Japanese are born with black hair but in recent years colouring has taken off and recent research shows nearly 80 percent of Japanese women, as young as 15 to as old as 69, have coloured their hair at least once in their lives and seventy percent of those regularly bleached their hair.

"In past years, people whose workplace require formality such as school or bank, rarely had their hair coloured, but in these years those people including public officers have no qualm about bleaching their hair," said Yukihiko Hisada, assistant manager of marketing division at Hoyu co. - event organiser and one of Japan's leading hair colour manufacturers.

Though the most popular colour remains blonde, with brown following closely, black is back as well. Neighbouring countries are providing inspiration, with popular actresses Zhang Ziyi of China and Choi Ji-woo of South Korea often seen showing off their glossy dark hair in TV commercials that emphasise their Asian identity.

However, light-coloured hair remains popular because it is believed to make the face appear brighter and to be easier to coordinate with Western-style fashions.

Admiration for European hair has made even mousy brown tones a more desirable option than black, while younger Japanese of both sexes seek to express individuality with a palette of colours.

While brassy blonde is out, hairdressers say very few fashion-conscious Japanese women are prepared to go completely natural, since many feel poker-straight black hair is unflattering.

Korea, Uzbekistan seek strategic partnership

sincerely welcome Uzbekistan's President, H.E. Islam Karimov on his fourth visit to Korea. This visit is his first trip to overseas this year and a return visit for President Roh Moo-hyun's visit last May. Uzbekistan's President Karimov considers Korea as a most important trading country, and he is also pro-Korea.


Declaring independence in September 1991, the Republic of Uzbekistan set Korea as its No.1 economic trading partner and has increased investment and technology cooperation. Korea is Uzbekistan's No.1 investment market.

The background to the Uzbek president's love and respect for Korea came from the Goryeo people's sincerity and diligence when they were forced to move to Central Asia (now Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan) from the Maritime Province of Siberia in 1937.

In fact, Uzbeks provided bread and food to the Goryeo people, and the Goryeo people have not forgotten their kindness and friendship for over 70 years.

About 250,000 Goryeo people, about 1 percent of the Uzbek population, live in the Republic of Uzbekistan. Those Goryeo people built the Soviet Union's two representative collective farms (KOLHOZ), and one of them received a heroes medal, which was the highest medal awarded during the Soviet period, and a street is still named after him, Kim Byoung-hwa.

The republic of Uzbekistan is a hub of Central Asia with a delightful four seasons and rich natural resources. It grows a fifth of the world's cotton and has the sixth largest reserves of natural gas. Moreover, in the recent exploration and exploitation of the Aral Sea oil reserves, Uzbekistan chose Korea as its main partner. It also provided development rights for a zinc mine to Korea, and this will be concluded during Karimov's visit to Korea. The leading star of the Korean Wave (Hallyu) Choi ji woo will appear as a cover model in the Taiwan edition of the world-renowned fashion magazine "Vogue" this May. This is the first time a Korean has been so featured. Choi recently completed a photo session for the cover.
Choi Ji-woo was selected as the face for the Chinese edition of "Cosmopolitan" and the Hong-Kong edition of "Elle", both of which will be released in May and June respectively. It is the second time Choi will appear on the cover of "Cosmopolitan".

Choi once again showed off her celebrity status by appearing as cover model for world-renowned fashion magazines that mostly feature international top models and Hollywood top stars as their cover models
A "Vogue" official said Choi was selected as the cover model because the company recognizes her as the most renowned Hallyu star in Asia. "Vogue" expects to gain greater Asian market share by featuring Choi whose TV drama "Rondo" currently finished televising. Her film "Now and Forever" (Yeonriji) will be released in Japan next month.

The melodrama "Now and Forever" will be released on April 13. Choi will play Han Hye-won, a lovely woman who wants to happily live for the rest of her life in the face of death. Jo Han-seon will play Lee Min-soo, a young CEO of game company who was awoke to a truthful love of life for the first time by getting to know Han Hye-won. Choi, whose representative character has been mostly cheerful and adorable, once again challenges herself in a melodramatic role.

Born on June 11, 1975, in Gyeonggi Paju, Choi Ji-woo made her debut in the 1995 drama War and Love. Choi rose to some fame from the drama series First Love. Choi co-starred with actor Bae Yong-joon in the Korean Drama Series (Winter Sonata) in March 2002, which in turn helped her to gain fame from the high popularity of that drama, especially in Japan which still lasts till today, though in decline as time passes.

Lately, Choi has gained a wide Japanese audience watching her Romantic Comedy movie, Everybody has Secrets, in which she has co-starred with Lee Byeong-heon.

Choi Ji-woo Remains Huge Box-Office Draw in Japan

The latest film starring Choi Ji-woo, "Now and Forever", is set to open in Korea on April 13 and in Japan two days later ? essentially a simultaneous release since new films open in Korea on Thursdays and in Japan on Saturdays.

In Japan, where it will be distributed by Toshiba Entertainment, the film opens on 280 screens, while domestic distributor Showbox will show it on 300 Korean screens.

The Japanese publication rights for the screenplay were sold for US$3.5 million before the movie was even completed, and a comic book and novel based on the film have also been generating plenty of advance publicity for the movie there.

As the female lead in the TBS soap opera 'Rondo' the actress gained recognition in Japan as well.

The show, whose series came to an end on March 26, saw ratings fall off toward the end, and there were signs of a backlash when a series of articles in the Japanese press painted a less than flattering picture of the actress. Choi was portrayed as a fanatical non-smoker who insisted on declaring the entire set a smoke-free zone, while the star on occasion reportedly kept crew waiting for hours. Choi was also said to be picky about her diet and prone to sulking whenever there was no kimchi around.

TBS felt moved to write to the Sankei Sports newspaper denying the charges. "Since there are many smokers among the crew, a smoking ban was impossible, and there was never a need to wait for Choi Ji-woo because she came to the set completely prepared, even with her makeup done," the broadcaster said. It added Choi never complained about even the most bog-standard food.

When it first aired, "Rondo" got ratings of some 20 percent, but the show's seriousness put some viewers off, and the decision of rivals to schedule competing programs in the same time slot dragged ratings down to an average of 15.9 percent.

Melodrama Princess Back With New Movie

Celebrity actress Choi Ji-woo is back with her new melodrama movie "Yeonriji, Now and Forever," which will open here on April 13.

Best known for her leading role in the television series "Winter Sonata (Kyoul Yonga)" all over Asia, Choi will play her trademark role of a beautiful yet ill-fated woman in the film.

But she says that the film will show a different side from her previous roles.

"When I first read the script of the film, I felt quite confident about this role and I thought I could do a good job," Choi said Monday during a news conference after the preview screening of "Yeonrijin, Now and Forever" at the Megabox Theater in Samsong-dong, Seoul.

"But there were also many things that I haven't tried before like 'lovey dovey' acting. I think the character I play in this movie is different from those in my previous works," Choi said.

Directed by Kim Seong-jung, the movie is a sad love story between a rich, charming man and beautiful woman with a fatal disease.

Min-su (played by Cho Han-sun) is a playboy, who seems to have everything _ the looks, money and position of CEO at a game company. He indulges in casual relationships with many girls, but he has never been in true love until he meets Hye-won.

Hye-won (by Choi) is sick with a fatal disease and has to spend most of her time at hospital, but she is not discouraged with her misfortune and tries to enjoy her life.

As they are attracted to each other, Min-su gets to learn about love and Hye-won has the best time in her life.

As the story sounds cliche, it received negative reviews from local critics, who claims that the film relies solely on the star power with its shallow and flimsy story. But the movie received positive reviews from Japanese film critics when it was premiered in Japan on Feb. 24, prior to its official release there on April 15.

The leading star of the Korean Wave (Hallyu) Choi ji woo will appear as a cover model in the Taiwan edition of the world-renowned fashion magazine "Vogue" this May. This is the first time a Korean has been so featured. Choi recently completed a photo session for the cover.

TV actress and hallyu star Choi Ji-woo (http://www.hancinema.net/korean_Choi_Ji-woo.php) has reportedly been distressed over the low viewer ratings of her TV drama "Rondo", currently being aired in Japan. She is still recognized in Japan as a leading South Korean actress and known as the "queen of tears". But the viewer ratings of Rondo have been on the decline, causing consternation among all the people involved in its production.

Rondo was filmed last year by TBS TV of Japan with a budget of 12 billion won. Even before it was filmed, the drama generated quite a buzz and attracted much public attention both in Japan and South Korea. Many people expected it to be a smash hit when its first episode achieved 20 percent viewer ratings.

But despite its initial success, the viewer ratings of Rondo have been on the decline, currently hovering around the ten-percent level. The drama recorded 15.8 percent during the first week of February (Jan. 30-Feb. 5), but dropped to 14.8 percent during the second week of February (Feb. 6-12), and continued its spiral downward.

Some people attribute the lower ratings of Rondo to its storyline. They say that the drama is too complicated and not very engaging to the audience, adding that the plot is very similar to that of the Hong Kong film "Infernal Affairs", which revolves around a criminal gang.

Drama "trees of heaven" to air in japan

SBS TV's special drama "Trees in Heaven" will air across Japan starting from April.

SBS said on Mar. 7, "Fuji TV, a terrestrial network in Japan, will air the drama 'Trees in Heaven' during late-night hours on Thursdays starting from Apr. 13". Prior to this, BS Fuji, a satellite channel of Fuji TV, will broadcast the drama every Thursday at 9:00 p.m. starting from Apr. 6.

The version of "Trees in Heaven" that will be aired on Fuji TV and BS Fuji will be an abridged edition dubbed in Japanese. Its original version with Japanese subtitles will air on CS Fuji, a cable channel of Fuji TV, in July.

As the story sounds cliche, it received negative reviews from local critics, who claims that the film relies solely on the star power with its shallow and flimsy story. But the movie received positive reviews from Japanese film critics when it was premiered in Japan on Feb. 24, prior to its official release there on April 15.

But she said that the film was not tailored only for Japanese moviegoers.

Extreme makeovers to keep fans happy

ONE Korean star went from damsel to seductress.
Another transformed from romantic lover to savage beast.

That's Son Ye Jin and Kwon Sang Woo for you, both of whom underwent extreme makeovers on the big screen recently.

Why? To defy stereotyping? Prove their versatility? Or were they just pulling a publicity stunt?

Whatever the case, any 'change of style' is highly valued in Hallyuwood (Korea's Hollywood), according to the April issue of the international edition of Asta TV magazine.

A feature on renowned director Yoon Seok Ho reads: 'The Korean entertainment circle is the place where only the good changers, irregardless of whether they are actors or directors, can survive.'

Given the competitive industry that churns out new faces faster than you can say 'cute', it is crucial that existing hotties continually reinvent themselves to keep up.

This would certainly explain the trend of A-listers taking on dramatically different roles, like Jang Dong Gun.

He transformed from a righteous soldier in Brotherhood to a bitter pirate in Typhoon.

Then there's Lee Young Ae who played a kind-hearted cook in Jewel In The Palace before turning into a cold-hearted murderer in Sympathy For Lady Vengeance.

The latest to transform themselves are Ye Jin and Sang Woo.

Totally shedding her familiar demure damsel image - think Summer Scent and April Snow - Ye Jin, 24, turns into a temptress in angel's clothing in her new movie, The Art Of Seduction.

She manages to bat her eyelashes innocently, yet flirt so outrageously and deliver a heart-stoppingly wet and sexy dance.

'I love this character, so I pushed myself to my limits to be funny. But I must emphasise that I'm not like that in real life,' she told Chosun Ilbo.

Still, the much-hyped transformation piqued audience interest and attracted a smashing 1.8 million admissions when it was shown in Korea last December.

Meanwhile, Sang Woo's metamorphosis from romantic hunk in Stairway To Heaven to brutal, expletive-spewing detective in Running Wild was praised by critics, but met with lukewarm response from fans.

Some film reviewers in Korea were impressed with his 'splendid' portrayal of an aggressive gangster cop - his most macho and beastly character to date.

Others praised the 30-year-old's efforts at doing most of the action scenes himself - which made the numerous bruises he got worthwhile.

Sang Woo himself said: 'I want to get my acting career to a more mature level now that I have turned 30.'

But his largely-female fan base probably prefer him as a hunk, since his new image only attracted a mediocre 800,000 admissions in South Korea.

Perhaps not all changes are good after all?

Korean star Choi Jiwoo's busy schedule of promoting movie “Yeonriji” recently had resulted in her skin having rashes and unable to attend a recording of 'Live broadcasting TV public entertainments' program scheduled on the 11th.

'Live broadcasting TV public entertainments' production team added on the 11th, "We will be looking for replacement now because it is tomorrow's (the 12th) broadcasting" while saying, "They were told by Choi Jiwoo side that her skin problem was awful and it's difficult to make an appearance.”

Choi Ji-woo is one of the most beloved actresses here and in other Asian countries _ especially in Japan where she is affectionately called ``Ji-woo Hime,'' meaning Princess Ji-woo in Japanese.

But would you be willing to pay 7,000 won and sit in a theater for almost two hours watching a cliche love story just because she stars in it?

You may have to ask yourself this question if you want to check out her new movie ``Yeonriji, Now and Forever.''

Directed by Kim Seong-jung and starring Choi and Cho Han-sun, the movie is a melodrama revolving around a rich, charming man and beautiful woman with a fatal disease.

Min-su (played by Cho) is a playboy. With his attractive looks, money and position as a CEO of a game company, he can easily lure women he likes and simply enjoys casual relationships with them.

His life, however, reaches a turning point when Hye-won (Choi) enters the scene.

At first, she is nothing more than one of many women he has met, but as he gets to know her he realizes that he is in love, which he has never experienced before.

Although Hye-won has to spend most of her time at hospital due to a fatal disease, she is always cheerful and not discouraged with her misfortune and tries to enjoy life. (Mysteriously, Hye-won doesn't give any signs that she is dying until their relationship is in full bloom.)

As the story progresses, Min-su learns about the true meaning of love and Hye-won has the best time of her life, thanks to him.

But this seemingly sad story falls short of arousing audiences' sympathy. Their agony and sadness is not well portrayed, rather audiences are forced to sense it merely through their tears, which doesn't work well.

Their ``romantic'' dating is often cheesy and unrealistic given the seriousness of their situation.

The scenes of Min-su renting an entire car theater for Hye-won and confessions of their love for each other with video messages through cell phones would probably fit better in a teen movie. The movie adds some comic elements by incorporating two other couples, which seems to aim to prevent the film from falling into a typical tearjerker, but it simply falls short as most of it has nothing to do with the main story. As the movie uses formulas that we have seen hundreds of times in other melodramas and depends largely on star power, if you're not a huge fan of Choi you may find yourself giggling during serious scenes.

The first Parfums Christian Dior beauty concept boutique has opened its doors in Hong Kong, writes BOEY PING PING.

CHRISTIAN Dior’s newest addition to the family, Dior Beauty Concept Boutique, has bagged a premium spot at the corner of a long line of competing brands in Festival Walk, a swanky shopping mall in Hong Kong.

“We told them we were going to do something special and unique so they understood that we wanted a premium spot,” says Brice Baudoin, Christian Dior’s Asia Pacific regional director. That something different, is departing from counter culture with “floating” makeup boards, Hollywood-inspired dressing tables and art gallery-style perfume displays.

It took one year of brainstorming among experts in the field and experimenting with different plans and layouts before the world’s first Christian Dior beauty boutique took form. But Dior’s new project didn’t come cheap. Baudoin won’t reveal the exact figure but confides: “It’s triple the price of our most expensive counter.” On the opening day, a noisy lion dance, congratulatory flower bouquets and the presence of Korean actress, Choi Ji Woo ensured the event was an auspicious one.

Hong Kong’s Festival Walk offer – a corner lot with lots of space, 950 sq ft (88.26 sq m) – was too good to pass up. “Unlike the rest of Asia, this is the only place where all the beauty boutiques are on the same floor, not isolated.” According to Baudoin, Festival Walk gave Dior free rein to create its temple of beauty.

The boutique is the brainchild of fashion designer John Galliano and Tyen, Dior's creative director. Baudoin says: “It’s a space where customers can get a makeover or a facial, touch and play with the products.”

Dior abandoned the use of clear glass walls, in lieu of reviving its classic “cannage” pattern to set itself apart from competitors. The pattern plays a sort of hide-and-seek, “now you see it, now you don’t” game.

Inside, music from the Dior couture show plays in the background while a video shows fashion runway scenes. Dior’s international merchandising director Alexandra Von Kerssenbrock says it’s all part of the brand’s aim at creating a five-senses experience. Within the store, four distinctive yet integrated zones for makeup, fragrance, skincare and treatments make it a one-stop beauty parlour.

Framed against the wall, Dior’s “ make-up floating board” is the biggest in cosmetic history. But if you aren’t tall enough for the board, you can still reach for the make-up table filled with the season’s hottest items and limited editions.

The backstage scene of Dior’s runway shows is recreated through makeup mirrors framed with crystallised light bulbs. And you can “play” model as the makeup artists “paint” your face while offering tips on the latest trends.

Rows of golden bottles of J’adore – the scent of the month – are poised on glass shelves artistically.

Tucked in a corner away from prying eyes lies the Haute Couture Skincare Zone. Here, beauty therapists scan customers’ skin with a beauty analyser to create personalised prescriptions.

But it is Dior Institut, Dior’s second beauty salon (the first is in Paris), that is the star of the show. All its six facials employ a unique 3D massage based on the placement of muscular fibres and energy circuits claim not only to benefit but re-awakens muscles in the body.

The star-studded price? HK$600-950 (RM300-475) per treatment.

THEY tell me I’m the first Malaysian to experience Hong Kong Dior Institut’s beautifying therapy. Like every good salon should, they politely request that I fill in a questionnaire indicating any allergies, ailments and recent treatments. The therapist thoughtfully notes my concern about dark eye circles and promises to concentrate more on the eye area.

My therapist leaves me in a room that could pass off as a bedroom. Minus the machines, you have the heated bed, a proper dressing table with full amenities – comb, brush, contact lens case (and tweezers even), hairspray, mousse, a silver wastebin and sophisticated chrome sink. Wrapped in warm blankets, towels, slippers and a soft, white robe, I feel like a guest in a five-star hotel.

The therapist goes straight to the source of my pain – the back – kneading and massaging it with lotion and oil. A hot pack is popped under my lower back and I feel the spread of warmth instantly soothe away nagging aches and pains. All makeup is gently removed to prepare my skin for the Capture Sculpt 10 treatment. The exfoliator is almost lovingly applied. My skin feels neither harshness nor irritation. But it is the Dior-exclusive, 3D massage along the décolleté that speedily sends me into a deep sleep. Even the chilliness of the cold mask to contour and refine my features doesn’t wake me up. But another 3D massage, this time on the face rouses me. I grudgingly change, wishing that this five-star treatment could go on forever. I down some Evian water and brush my hair with a silver comb. Ah? this is the life!

Korean heartthrob has tens of thousands of fans swooning at Tokyo Dome

South Korean superstar Lee Byung Hun and a host of special guests enchanted some 42,000 fans during a special fan event at Tokyo Dome on Wednesday.

As part of the event, Lee chatted with actress Choi Ji Woo, singer Zero, who sang the theme song of Lee's hit drama, "Utsukushiki Hibi" (Beautiful Days), and a few other guests.

The event also featured a live play based on Lee's life. The actor then sang the "Utsukushiki Hibi" theme song himself to the capacity crowd.

Lee became emotional at the end of the show.

"Something moving is filling my heart, although I don't know why," Lee told his fans. Japanese songwriter Yasushi Akimoto organized the fan event.

Lee is now working on a new love story with the working title "Natsu Monogatari" (Summer Story). His photo collection, "LBH Meets LBH," will be published on June 24 in Japan. (Mainichi)

Even before the heat of Yomiuri Giants slugger Lee Seung-yeop's bat cooled off, Tokyo Dome hummed with over 40,000 fans waiting for Korean actor Lee Byung-hun, fondly known as "Byonsama" in Japan.

Sporting a gent look in white suit, punctuated by his killer smile, Lee graced the stage for three hours, often joined by guest stars including actress Choi Ji-woo, singers Shin Seung-hoon and Ivy.

Choi co-starred with Lee in television drama "Beautiful Days" (2001) and movie "Everybody Has Secrets" (2004) and is one of the most popular Korean actresses in Japan, earning the nickname "Jiwoohime (Princess Jiwoo)."

Lee is labeled as one of the "Big Four," along with Bae Yong-joon, Jang Dong-gun and Won Bin (or Gwon Sang-woo, it depends), who have been leading the Korean Wave, or hallyu, an Asian-wide obsession with Korean pop culture. Now there is a second wave of Korean stars riding on dramas and movies in Japan and other Asian countries: Chung Woo-sung and Son Ye-jin in "A Moment to Remember," which marked the highest box office record, raking in about 3 billion yen in October; Kang Dong-won and Ha Ji-won in "Duelist," due this summer but already much anticipated thanks to their news conference held last month; and most recently director Bong Joon-ho's monster drama "The Host" that will feature Song Gang-ho and Bae Du-na.

The "Host" was purchased at $4.7 million last year even before the movie was filmed, reflecting the Japanese industry's interest in the director of "Memories of Murder" (2003), as well as actors and the subject: monster (think Godzilla). The blockbuster will be unveiled at the Cannes Film Festival before its premiere in June in Korea.

Off screen, more Korean stars are crossing the Korea Strait. On Saturday, R&B group SG Wannabe held their first concert in Japan, confirming that ballad singers can also appeal to Japanese fans. Leading the crop of singers is BoA, who topped the Oricon Chart eight times. Boy band Tong Vfang Xien Qi put five consecutive singles in the same chart's top 10 and is currently touring Japan, with their sixth single "Begin" to be released June 21.

Shinhwa announced that they will enter Japan with their first single in Japanese "Bokurano Gokoroni Taiyouga Aru (There is a sun in our heart)," which will be released next month. The six-member group started a five-month promotion tour across Asia, including mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan while Seven will visit seven cities in Japan.

Seven performed before 24,000 fans gathered at his first solo concert in Japan earlier this month and was awarded best Korean singer at the 2006 MTV Asia Awards in Bangkok. He is expected to grab another two at MTV Japan's Video Music Awards Japan and MTV China-CCTV Mandarin Music Honors, making him a "triple crown" winner, following last year's Rain. Singer/actor Rain was included as one of the 100 most influential people in the world by TIME, adding more steam to the buzzing career of the 23-year-old, who took the stage of Madison Square Garden in New York in February. A 10-minute ride on a ferry from Gapyeong to Nami Island on Lake Cheongpyeong transports you to an island that the Digital Age seems to have passed over. An island created with the construction of Cheongpyeong Dam which flooded the surrounding land, Nami Island, about an hour and a half from Seoul, is a slow-paced haven for people seeking solace in the tranquility of nature.



The late Min Byung-do, former governor of Bank of Korea, bought the island in 1965 upon his retirement and started planting trees on the flat, barren island. My last memory of Nami Island traces back to more than 30 years ago when I boarded the ferry for a company picnic. The ferry ride was a thrill - there were no ferries on the Han River back then - and running in the sprawling green grass was a heady experience for a child raised in the city.

Today, the more than 300 species of trees that Min planted have grown tall, turning the island into a lush green playground. There are lodgings, restaurants, event halls and of course, the statue of actor Bae Yong-joon and actress Choi Ji-woo locked in an eternal embrace (the two starred in the pan-Asian hit drama "Winter Sonata" whose many scenes were shot on the island).

Commercialism has made inroads into Nami Island: Upon landing, you will find electric carts to the left that will give you a guided tour of the island for 10,000 won to 50,000 won, depending on the length of the tour. But there is nothing of the aggressive push that you will find in many tourist spots. For example, you will not find anyone standing outside restaurants, ready to pull you in. Even the old train that traverses the island, costing 2,000 won per ride, is often out of service. On the day of my visit, the train was down again.

Despite the added attractions, Nami Island still remains a place to enjoy nature in an idyllic setting. The highlight of the island is the many tree lined paths that all lead to the central square area with its restaurants and shops. The birch tree lined path is better known among the visitors as the path where Bae and Choi rode a bicycle on their date. Then there is the fragrant pine tree path and the spectacular tunnel of tall metasequoia trees.

Large expanses of grass occupy the space between the tree lined paths, ideal for kids to run around, enjoying the wind in their face. Picnic benches are also scattered about the island, making it an ideal place for a family outing. However, visitors are not allowed to bring in burners for cooking.

For a unique dining experience, try the kimchi fried rice served in an old-fashioned metal lunch box at Yeonga. The lunch box also holds an egg, sunny-side-up, and before opening the lid, you are told to wear special rubber coated gloves and vigorously shake the hot lunch box to mix up the contents. If you find the 4,000 won meal a bit plain, you can add roasted seaweed for another 1,000 won.

The island, which bills itself as an island of "magic and fairytale," plays host to a number of festivals throughout the year. Now on through June 30 is "Nambook 006," an international book festival featuring children's books from 66 countries.

Dongchun Circus, the last surviving circus troupe in Korea, is holding regular shows during the festival period. Adding gaiety to the 70-day event is the music and dance from countries around the world with each weekend day designated to a specific country. Today, China will be the highlight while the European Union will be the featured country next weekend.

If the island's simple charms beckon you to stay another day, or if you miss the last ferry out, there is a choice of accommodations, from Nami Island Hotel to bungalows for two people, all located by the waterfront. The island's present operator, Kang Woo-hyon, a well-known book illustrator, seems sympathetic to writers struggling with writer's block. Nami Island runs several writer's cabins facing the lake. The sparsely furnished tiny one-room lodgings are ideal for just about anyone who wants to get away from it all, not just writers.

Not the tropical downpour, of course, but the strapping Korean hunk whose sizzling wild dance moves are known to reduce fans to puddles.

Most wouldn't fork out such a big sum for an Asian concert - the highest in recent years is $198 for local songbird Stefanie Sun's January gig - but die-hard Rain fan Stephanie Loh would.

'Yes, if I can get super good seats like the first two rows,' said the executive secretary, 33.

'Some people will say, siao (Hokkien for crazy) ah? But you really have to see him perform live to see what's so captivating about him on stage.

'Every concert is different and to see him in Singapore would be a totally different feeling because it's our home ground.'

The reason we're asking is this: In a press release sent to Taiwanese media, Rain has just announced his intentions to tour 11 Asian countries and hold 35 concerts from December to mark the release of his fourth Korean album.

Singapore is on the list of countries he intends to perform in, as well as our neighbours Malaysia and Indonesia, and the usual suspects Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan.

But while the news is exhilarating - if it happens, it will be Rain's first concert here and the first time a Korean artiste breaks into the concert circuit here - the reality is not so rosy.

It is common for an artiste to announce he is going to tour in a particular country even before a contract is signed - which seems to be the case here.

The New Paper checked with three major local concert organisers - Unusual Productions, Hype Records and VizPro - but none could confirm plans yet for a Rain concert here. All declined to talk about the feasibility of bringing the K-popster in, but we understand from industry sources that it will be a mean feat.

The main reason: Rain, 24, is deemed too expensive.

Being the top star he is, he will probably command top billing too.

Ticket prices depend largely on production costs and the artiste fee. And that's not including special requests.

For instance, fellow K-popster BoA's managers asked for a private jet as part the tour package, said one insider.

Rain's upcoming Global Project 1st Concert In The World - Rain Asian Tour, which boasts world class performance, equipment and stage effects - is expected to cost 40 billion won ($64m) to produce and attract over one million fans, reported Yonhap News Agency.

A quick calculation shows that each of the 35 shows would have to seat at least 20,000 to 30,000 people to keep ticket prices low.

Since our biggest venue, Singapore Indoor Stadium, can only accommodate 10,000, the concert promoter will have to carefully juggle production costs and sponsorship, and estimate how much the audience is willing to pay.

ENOUGH FANS?

Whether all the seats can be filled is another challenge.

The Rain Singapore fan club here has just 2,800 members and Rain's last album, It's Raining, shifted only 5,000 copies here.

However, it is believed Rain's drawing power extends far beyond these figures due to his constant media exposure - he was just in New York as one of Time Magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in the world and will release a new Japanese single next month - and his credible efforts in acting.

He is now in Pusan filming his first movie - a cyborg love story by Old Boy director Park Chan Wook - and his new drama serial, A Love To Kill, has just been released here on VCD.

Still, The New Paper decided to play devil's advocate and throw the question to Rain fans: How much would you pay to see your idol perform here?

Now, we understand that the mosh-pit rate for Rain's last concert tour is about US$150 ($235), higher than the $198 top-range ticket to local songbird Stefanie Sun's concert here in January.

The reaction we got was mixed.

Only one die-hard fan, Ms Loh, who has travelled to Bangkok and Hong Kong to see him perform, would fork out $500, while others gave lower figures.

Administrative executive Gina Wong, 30, said that $350 is reasonable.

She has seen five of Rain's concerts overseas and intends to to continue travelling to see him. Each trip costs around $1,000, including a concert ticket, she said.

'SORE-THROAT EXPERIENCE'

'Every show is a new experience, and we've been waiting for a year for him to come already.'

Events manager Tan Wei Wei, 30, who has seen Rain's concert DVD five times, said she would pay a maximum of $200 to see him perform live.

'It will be a sore-throat experience! Watching the DVD alone makes me feel like moving to the rhythm,' she added.

'His dancing is great and the whole stage design and special effects really boosted the ambience. There's also his six-pack abs and his cute, romantic, sexy and masculine persona.'

As for Secondary 2 student Lim Heng Xiang, 14, she said she would save for two weeks to set aside $150 for Rain.

'He dances very well, so I will go (see his concert) no matter what.'

Reuniting screen lovers Kwon Sang Woo and Kim Ha Neul (of My Tutor Friend), this wacky new romantic comedy about a Jackie Chan wannabe who falls for his childhood sweetheart is set to tickle when it opens here on 8 June.

Together, this new generation may just re-ignite the J-pop explosion in Asia.

Rejuvenation is key for this slowly stagnating music scene that last peaked in 1999 when Ayumi and Hikaru stormed up regional pop charts.

Although J-pop continues to appeal to a core group of fans, in Singapore, at least, album sales have undeniably dipped over the years as media and fans alike are swept away by the sudden rise of the Korean wave.

But the sizzling entry of sexy songbird Kumi Koda, 24, has blazed the trail for renewed J-pop interest here.

With her skimpy outfits, ample cleavage and outrageous antics, she has overshadowed Ayumi as the new headline-hogger and trendsetter.

Backed by an aggressive marketing campaign that has plastered her erotic images all over town, Kumi has sold an impressive 9,000 copies of her two albums combined.

Also grabbing eyeballs here is six-member boy band Kat-tun, which is being hailed as the next Smap for its triple chart-topping debut.

Its trump card? A killer combination of good looks and multi-talents - singing, dancing, acting and hosting. Despite little promotion, the guys have won enough fans to sell 2,000 copies of their Best Of Kat-tun album.

It remains to be seen if these upcoming artistes' combined J-pop power can be sustained, but industry execs are hopeful.

Sony BMG's Susan Tay said: 'Kumi has created a ripple here and people will notice her because her record label (Warner Music) went all out to promote her.

'There's definitely hype around her, though not as whirlwind-like compared to (the last J-pop wave) a few years ago.'

Added Mr James Kang of Warner Music: 'Thank goodness we've got one big new artiste who has captured the attention of Singapore.

'Actually you only need one big artiste to trigger the J-pop wave, but whether it is a small wave or a tsunami depends on the marketing strategies of record companies.'

Perhaps the answer lies in the highly-anticipated debut of two vocal powerhouses later this year.

You can call them aspiring Hikarus. Both are reportedly being groomed as the 'secret weapon' of their respective record labels.

First, there's husky-voiced Ayaka, 19, who, like Hikaru, shot to fame on the strength of a stirring ballad (I Believe) tagged to a highly-anticipated drama serial, Rondo (which stars Korean actress Choi Ji Woo).

Then there is Yuna Ito, 25, who is America-born like Hikaru, but found her big break in Japan playing a rock band vocalist in the hit film Nana last year. She also released the hit single, Endless Story, from the movie.

Miss Tay confirmed that Yuna is the 'next big new artiste' for Sony BMG, and hopes her debut will 'stimulate the Singapore market'.

Mr Kang, whose company pushed Ayumi to fame here in 1999, also said he has a 'special strategy' planned to launch Ayaka here in September after her Japan debut.

Meanwhile, there is hope that the real Hikaru's long-awaited return to the J-pop scene will spice things up a bit.

It has been two years since she bowed out of showbiz for health reasons and her lukewarm US debut. But she is expected to make a splashing comeback next month with a new album.

Who knows, the competition between Hikaru and the two newbies could just be what it takes to cement a new J-pop wave.


He's emotional over new role



THERE is a way to break Japanese actor Ken Watanabe's tough resolve - get him to talk about his new role as an Alzheimer's patient in the new Japanese film, Memories Of Tomorrow.

The Hollywood-based actor, 46, is so devoted to his role that he even shed tears while discussing it.

Critics are raving over Ken's poignant and sensitive portrayal, which the Last Samurai star partly credits to his personal triumph over leukaemia in real life in the early '90s.

Winter Sonata’ coming to Nepal [ 2006-5-21 ]

"Winter Sonata" is coming to Nepal.

According to the sources, one of the private enterprises is on preparations for airing of Korean popular TV drama "Winter Sonata" is now so unbelievably widespread and popular that it is clearly much more than a trendy fad.

The hyped drama, featuring Bae Yong-joon, Choi Ji?woo and Park Yong-ha, was the first Korean drama to be aired on NHK, Japan's public broadcasting station.

It also touched off an unprecedented craze for Korean pop culture among Japanese fans. It earned Bae the honorific Japanese nick name,"Yon-sama."

This, time, "Winter Sonata" will be broadcast with subtitles, not dubbed in Nepalese, the sources said.

"It is an effort to meet the demands of fans who want to hear the actual voice of "Yon-sama", joked one of the fans.

I remembered that when I visited Japan couple of months ago on my professional business, most of the Japanese persons I met, not only a cultural related persons but also a journalists, businesspersons, employees or shopkeepers talked about "Yon-sama" (Bae Yong Joon, the lead actor in "Winter Sonata")."

Thus, I thought that these Japanese might have been somewhat shocked to find out that they knew much more about the youthful actor with windswept hair'Bae Yong-joon.

Indeed, also I came to know that his popularity in Japan is rated on the top. It was also written in the newspaper that even Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi has also said that "Yon-sama is more popular than me". Actually, Yon-sama is a special honorific title originally reserved for royalty and aristocrats in Japan.

The drama brought flocks of Japanese tourists to Korea, who wanted to visit filming sites.

Some experts estimated that "Winter Sonata" generated about 2.3 trillion won (US $ 2.2 billion) in tourism and opened a new chapter in the relationships between the Korea and Japan.

The drama also been aired in various countries including the United States, China, Hong Kong, Uzbekistan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Cambodia, Singapore, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Egypt and more?.

These days the growth of cultural and knowledge industries of most Asian countries has somehow been hampered by differences in language-demographics and level of economic development.

It is our ardent hope that Asian countries, with which we share various geographical and cultural similarities, have to work to develop a common market in the culture and knowledge sectors. However, the trend setters involved in cultural and intellectual circles have developed a vision of an "Asian Cultural Community". As the first step in this direction, Nepal should strive to create a market with other countries.

The popularity of "Winter Sonata" has clearly shown how these barriers between the countries can be dismantled. Thus, this drama could be easily translated into Nepalese version.

The potential for creating an Asian cultural community and promising culture market should provide litmus test for this hoped for common culture market between the Asian countries and perhaps could be capitalized the age of narrow-minded nationalism has long passed; what is needed now is a future-oriented vision capable of transforming the whole of Asian region into a genuine cultural community into other continents.

The current "Hallyu" or Korean wave in Nepal offers an adequate background to help increase cultural exchanges between the two countries.

As the Korean people's interest in well-off arts and culture of Nepal has increased noticeably, the exchange of art and cultural shows has proven to be truly meaningful in further strengthening the cultural and friendly relations among the people of both the countries.

Cultural contact can do much in warming up relationships between any countries. The warm feeling between the citizens through traveling and the enjoyment of each other's movies, songs and other works of art can improve relations.

Nepal and (Republic of) Korea have an agreement on cultural exchange activities. And Nepalese and Koreans, with striking similarity in their Asian structures, share a cultural affinity that resulted from broad exchanges since ancient times too.

Koreans can quickly become close friends when they find out that they share something in common; for instance, the same hometown, the same school or the same hobbies. It is the sense of being 'one of us' which plays an important role in developing human relations in Korea.

As Nepal is a beautiful country endowed with unparalleled natural beauty and an opulent cultural heritage Korea is also very rich in that regard. There are many things that Nepal could learn from Korea in various areas.

Nepal and Korea both situated in Asia are home to diversity of cultures, where people live and mingle in harmony. Even though the levels of economic development and physical distance separate Nepal and Korea but they have always been close through mutual understanding, goodwill and cooperation.

Thus, Cross-cultural activities should be broadened to identify, respect, learn and incubate new trends of culture emerging from RoK and Nepal that could be proved a milestone in the field of culture.

Anyway, "Winter Sonata" is coming to Nepal soon. And, hopefully, this internationally popular drama will no doubt touch the hearts of the Nepalese viewers

According to the sources, one of the private enterprises is on preparations for airing of Korean popular TV drama "Winter Sonata" is now so unbelievably widespread and popular that it is clearly much more than a trendy fad.

The hyped drama, featuring Bae Yong-joon, Choi Ji?woo and Park Yong-ha, was the first Korean drama to be aired on NHK, Japan's public broadcasting station.

It also touched off an unprecedented craze for Korean pop culture among Japanese fans. It earned Bae the honorific Japanese nick name,"Yon-sama."

This, time, "Winter Sonata" will be broadcast with subtitles, not dubbed in Nepalese, the sources said.

"It is an effort to meet the demands of fans who want to hear the actual voice of "Yon-sama", joked one of the fans.

I remembered that when I visited Japan couple of months ago on my professional business, most of the Japanese persons I met, not only a cultural related persons but also a journalists, businesspersons, employees or shopkeepers talked about "Yon-sama" (Bae Yong Joon, the lead actor in "Winter Sonata")."

Thus, I thought that these Japanese might have been somewhat shocked to find out that they knew much more about the youthful actor with windswept hair'Bae Yong-joon.

Indeed, also I came to know that his popularity in Japan is rated on the top. It was also written in the newspaper that even Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi has also said that "Yon-sama is more popular than me". Actually, Yon-sama is a special honorific title originally reserved for royalty and aristocrats in Japan.

The drama brought flocks of Japanese tourists to Korea, who wanted to visit filming sites.

Some experts estimated that "Winter Sonata" generated about 2.3 trillion won (US $ 2.2 billion) in tourism and opened a new chapter in the relationships between the Korea and Japan.

The drama also been aired in various countries including the United States, China, Hong Kong, Uzbekistan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Cambodia, Singapore, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Egypt and more?.

These days the growth of cultural and knowledge industries of most Asian countries has somehow been hampered by differences in language-demographics and level of economic development.

It is our ardent hope that Asian countries, with which we share various geographical and cultural similarities, have to work to develop a common market in the culture and knowledge sectors. However, the trend setters involved in cultural and intellectual circles have developed a vision of an "Asian Cultural Community". As the first step in this direction, Nepal should strive to create a market with other countries.

The popularity of "Winter Sonata" has clearly shown how these barriers between the countries can be dismantled. Thus, this drama could be easily translated into Nepalese version.

The potential for creating an Asian cultural community and promising culture market should provide litmus test for this hoped for common culture market between the Asian countries and perhaps could be capitalized the age of narrow-minded nationalism has long passed; what is needed now is a future-oriented vision capable of transforming the whole of Asian region into a genuine cultural community into other continents.

The current "Hallyu" or Korean wave in Nepal offers an adequate background to help increase cultural exchanges between the two countries.

As the Korean people's interest in well-off arts and culture of Nepal has increased noticeably, the exchange of art and cultural shows has proven to be truly meaningful in further strengthening the cultural and friendly relations among the people of both the countries.

Cultural contact can do much in warming up relationships between any countries. The warm feeling between the citizens through traveling and the enjoyment of each other's movies, songs and other works of art can improve relations.

Nepal and (Republic of) Korea have an agreement on cultural exchange activities. And Nepalese and Koreans, with striking similarity in their Asian structures, share a cultural affinity that resulted from broad exchanges since ancient times too.

Koreans can quickly become close friends when they find out that they share something in common; for instance, the same hometown, the same school or the same hobbies. It is the sense of being 'one of us' which plays an important role in developing human relations in Korea.

As Nepal is a beautiful country endowed with unparalleled natural beauty and an opulent cultural heritage Korea is also very rich in that regard. There are many things that Nepal could learn from Korea in various areas.

Nepal and Korea both situated in Asia are home to diversity of cultures, where people live and mingle in harmony. Even though the levels of economic development and physical distance separate Nepal and Korea but they have always been close through mutual understanding, goodwill and cooperation.

Thus, Cross-cultural activities should be broadened to identify, respect, learn and incubate new trends of culture emerging from RoK and Nepal that could be proved a milestone in the field of culture.

Anyway, "Winter Sonata" is coming to Nepal soon. And, hopefully, this internationally popular drama will no doubt touch the hearts of the Nepalese viewers

The members of starjiwoo Japan had participated in a small “love practice activity” yesterday, the 10th in South Korea.

However, we were not shown the place where “the interlocking branches tree” in “Yeonriji” was located. We played till late in Everland.

The drama 'Sonata of winter' of heralding and Yonjun & jiwoo starring of Inoraif = So Myonfa South Korea style is told to be made into a film, and topics are collected. Now that I gave you time to curse, scream, and throw things at your screen, here's some details: Yoon Seok-Ho's 2002 KBS2 Drama is the most successful of all time, not necessarily at home (where it has its fans, and did pretty well in the ratings, but it would have been forgotten if not for its success overseas) but especially in Japan, where in a couple of years it made something like a few TRILLION (yeah, TRIllion) Won between distribution rights, DVD sales, Yonsama coffee mugs, toilet paper, teletubbie dolls and even condoms (OK, not really, but you get the picture). It made its stars Yonsama and Choi Ji-Woo two of the top actors in Japan, so much that Prez Koizumi joked Bae is more popular with okasans than he is (I can understand that...). It even allowed Park Yong-Ha (who can't act to save his life) to start a successful singing career over there, reaching the top of the Oricon Charts.

How's the show? If you listen to those who made money off of it, it's a masterpiece. If you listen to people like yours truly, think of going to the dentist for a visit that takes 20 hours to complete, and at the end your teeth are still rotting (or is it the brain?). Anyhow, yes, we're getting a movie adaptation of the popular Drama, with some sources saying this might end up becoming Yonsama's next movie project, and that Choi Ji-Woo might also join the proceedings, which would mean two things: most Koreans would yawn, and this thing would make gazillions in Japan. Aren't they making it for the okasan crowd anyway?

Film will be produced by Culture Cap Media, the peeps behind the Moon Geun-Young star vehicles 어린신부 (My Little Bride) and 댄서의 순정 (Innocent Steps), after buying rights from KBS Media. Shooting will start at the end of the year, for an early 2007 release -- Winter anyway, ahhh... doesn't it fit? Again, no word about cast or even the director, but some are saying Yoon Seok-Ho himself might be convinced to make his film debut. Be afraid, be very afraid...
