Shoes Spare Gays from Nudity Charges

Sep 20, 9:16 am ET

TORONTO (Reuters) - Seven men who bared all in Toronto's Gay Pride Parade have been cleared of public nudity charges because they were wearing shoes, their lawyer says.
The men, from a social group calling itself Totally Naked Toronto Men Enjoying Nudity (TNT!MEN), were arrested and charged under Canada's Criminal Code after they marched in the annual festival wearing only footwear -- and sunscreen.

But prosecutors dropped the charges this week after conceding there was no reasonable prospect of a conviction, said lawyer Peter Simm, a TNT!MEN member himself.

Simm said Thursday his clients were technically not naked even though one had a "sort of a codpiece on."

"The law is very straightforward if someone is absolutely and completely bereft of clothing...however things become a little more complicated if there is a scrap of apparel anywhere on the body and the Crown has to show that the person is indecently clad which gets into what the current Canadian legal test is for indecency," he said.

"Because everyone wore at least footwear the Crown had to prove indecency and it couldn't."

Simm said his clients, two of them visitors from Texas, were relieved at the decision but upset that they were arrested in the first place.

TNT!MEN nude marchers have joined in the gay festival, which attracts tens of thousands of marchers and onlookers in downtown Toronto each year, ever since the group was first formed in 1997.

But before this year they had never been arrested.

"Besides the fun of marching in the parade, the marchers did have some serious intent as well, addressing issues of body shame and also what is regarded in the gay community as 'body fascism'," Simm said, adding that the men arrested ranged in age and size -- the youngest was 25 and the oldest was 61.

The Crown, worried about more such incidents, wrote to Simm saying the decision to drop charges should not be seen as a precedent for more incidents in the future.

Consumer Help Number Is Sex Hotline

Sep 21, 11:35 AM (ET)

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Alice Morrison was looking for a better way to seal her pickles. What she heard made her want to seal her ears.

The 71-year-old Sunday school teacher was unhappy with the canning lids on her sweet pickle jars. So she reached for her box of Kerr mason lids and called the consumer help number printed on the side.

Instead of advice for her lids, she was greeted by a recorded, raspy voice that she was about to hear "sexy introductions from callers" and that for $1.99 a minute she could "join the fun."

"I assure you, I wasn't looking for any hotline," Morrison said.

It isn't the first time people seeking information about canning have discovered themselves hooked up to a phone sex line.

Officials with the company that makes the lids have fielded plenty of confused and sometimes angry calls from across the country, said Judy Harrold, manager of consumer affairs for Alltrista Consumer Products Co.

Harrold said that about a year and a half ago, Alltrista decided to consolidate two canning companies, Ball and Kerr, under one helpline. Kerr's old 800 number was returned to the phone company, she said, and the phone company assigned it to a phone sex company.

"We attempted all we could to get that number back," Harrold said. "But once it was released, there was nothing we could do."

Kerr's new packaging is printed with the consolidated 800 number. Morrison wasn't sure she would try the other number.

"I might just put everything in the refrigerator and eat it now rather than messing with another number," she said.

Car Plant Hosts 'Carmen' Production

Sep 18, 3:49 PM (ET)

BERLIN (AP) - Dresden's renowned Semper Opera, forced out of the city's 19th-century opera house by recent flooding, will perform Georges Bizet's "Carmen" in a nearby car plant.

The production will be staged at a new Volkswagen luxury auto factory in the city starting Oct. 26, officials said Wednesday.

The baroque opera house close to the Elbe River suffered more than $20 million in damage during the devastating flooding that swept through Germany and other central European countries last month.

The Semper Opera has already announced a special schedule of performances at alternative venues in the city as well as elsewhere in Germany and Poland.

No date has been announced for events to resume in the opera house, where the basement - which housed the stage machinery as well as the electrical, air conditioning and other technical systems - was under water for a week.

Japanese teens' busts are booming. But rather than being a transformation to tempt or titillate, the bountiful breasts stem from an alarming booby that apparently allows young girls to absorb potentially deadly substances. Physicians warn girls to juggle their lifestyles to keep abreast of healthy habits to avoid a deadly fate, according to Josei Jishin (10/1).
"Now, across the world, we're seeing trends such as declining sperm counts, womb inflammations and accelerated menstruation. We need to study more about chemical substances that affect hormonal imbalances," says Prof. Taisen Iguchi of the Bioscience Institute at the Okazaki National Research Institutes.

Our atmosphere, soil, rivers and seas contain a number of substances that affect hormonal balance. Prime among them are such materials as dioxin and polystyrene, which are among 70 substances the Japanese government recognizes as hormone disrupters.

Links have been made with these substances and changes in reproductive organs, causing infertility or causing males to adopt female characteristics. Further sewing a seed of doubt in the eyes of guys, the substances have also been blamed for inducing impotency and shriveled sperm counts.

"These substances have been blamed for the discovery of ova in a male carp's gonads and for changing male seashells into females. But the effects on mammals are different. It would be a mistake to think the changes they bring on are as simple as making males more female or women more feminine," Iguchi tells Josei Jishin.

Days when Japanese women struggled to fill their bras have become like mammaries of a not-too-distant past. In fact, research by Wacoal Corp., Japan's biggest brassiere maker, shows that Japanese females can now go tit for tat in the breast stakes with Western counterparts as they now all wear bras by their final year of junior high school, a full two years earlier than it took to achieve the same feat two decades ago.

"Along with changes in nutrition, hormone disrupting chemicals can be seen as a reason for the increase in breast size," Masami Niita of the Japan Offspring Fund tells Josei Jishin. "But they can also cause an increase in breast cancer cells and they are a suspected cause of breast cancer."

Shinichi Tashiro, a professor at Showa Pharmaceutical University, warns that it's not a time for women to chew the fat when it comes to these dangerous materials.

"They build up in fats. And they don't just remain in the body. They affect women's hormones in a number of ways," he says. "Young women nowadays enjoy eating fast foods that are high in saturated fats. And, even though they're well aware of the importance of dieting, they're not doing a great deal of exercise. That means the women may not look overweight, but they don't have a great deal of muscle built up and what they do have is fat. It's a situation ideal for the dangerous substances to build up in."

Tashiro notes that once the substances have built up it doesn't take long to strike.

"Growth and sexual hormones become more active during puberty than they normally would, increasing the size of girls' busts and bringing on a growing number of 11- or 12-year-old girls who being menstruating," he says.

Niita of the offspring fund agrees.

"More than the individual, it's their fetuses that are affected, raising the risk of girls suffering from uterine diseases," she tells Josei Jishin. "It's taking ages for the government to act on this problem, so it's important for women to make sure they look after themselves. Eating foods that contain substantial amounts of these substances could be a real booby."

Man Dies After Detergent Mistaken for Hummus

Sep 23, 11:54 am ET

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - A 91-year-old Israeli died after his caregiver spread a paste-like dishwashing detergent on his bread instead of hummus, police said on Monday.
The caregiver, who had worked for the old man for five years, told police he could not read the Hebrew writing on the detergent's container and served it up when the man asked for some hummus, a chickpea spread popular in the Middle East.

Police said the caregiver called an ambulance when his employer fell ill on Saturday but the man died in the hospital.

"We are checking to see whether there was criminal intent or whether it was a negligent homicide," a police spokesman said.

KFC Customer Gets Pot With Chicken

Sep 23, 8:13 AM (ET)

MILL VALLEY, Calif. (AP) - A Mill Valley KFC restaurant employee was arrested after a customer received a little something extra with his chicken dinner.

This customer received two bags of marijuana Friday, instead of the extra biscuits he had requested.

The customer gave the marijuana back to the employee, got his extra biscuits and called police.

Police arrested Carlos Ayala, 26, of Vallejo, shortly after the customer complained about the pot.

Marin County Sheriff's deputies said they found Ayala with a small amount of marijuana, a handgun and about $500 in his possession.

Ayala often worked the drive-up window at the restaurant and authorities say he may have been selling the marijuana to customers who used the right secret word as a code.

New York Museum Exposes City's Sexy Side

Oct 7, 8:44 am ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Sex in the city just got serious. New York's Museum of Sex, an adults-only institution that takes a journey through the city's sexual landscape over the centuries, opened to the public on Saturday.
The museum's debut exhibition, "NYC Sex: How New York City Transformed Sex," chronicles the way key events in the city's sexual history, as well as the everyday rebellions of anonymous New Yorkers, have influenced Americans' attitudes about sex.

"It's strange to stand around with other people watching porn," said Michael Schachner, a freelance writer in New York, although he added: "I think people check their inhibitions at the door in an exhibit like this."

Visitors plunked down $17 for admission and packed into narrow corridors to peer studiously at photos, films, objects and art that delve into the history of prostitution, burlesque, birth control, fetishes and other sex-related subjects.

Ranging from the tame to the X-rated, the exhibit aims to entertain -- the audio tour features a woman's excited moan -- as well as educate.

"We want people to ask questions. We want them to be informed," said Rebecca Ames, the museum's assistant curator. "We're here to show you what's out there."

Ads for brothels around New York city from the mid-1800s, photos of burlesque and striptease queen Gypsy Rose Lee and stag films from the early 1900s featuring nudity and sex acts are included among the museum's earlier items.

But one of the biggest draws seemed to be a section in the area dealing with sex in the 1960s and 1970s. Visitors -- who must be over 18 years old to enter -- eyed four video screens showing graphic films featuring 1970s porn star Vanessa Del Rio engaging in a variety of sexual acts.

Another wall displays photos of a blond pouty-lipped Linda Lovelace, another 1970s porn star who helped create "porn chic" with her movie "Deep Throat."

Other sections explore major turning points in America's sexual history, like the 1969 Stonewall riots in Greenwich village that helped spark the gay pride movement. Recordings of accounts by police and witnesses help paint the scene.

In the "Bizarre" section, which explores the fetish and sadomasochism subculture in 1930s New York, a severe-looking woman wearing high black boots and holding a riding crop glares out of one photo. Further down the wall are examples of early fetish gear from the 1960s.

More shocking than any of the explicit photos was the idea that kinky behavior is nothing new, said Danielle Morfi, 21, a recent graduate of Boston University, who was most intrigued by the museum's collection of vintage condom tins.

"When you think back about the 1800s, you weren't thinking people back then were having sex," Morfi said.

A portion of ticket proceeds from NYC Sex will benefit ACRIA (The AIDS Community Research Initiative of America), The Kinsey Institute and The Lesbian Herstory Archives.

Man dies after setting booby traps in home

A BELGIAN man died of a gunshot wound after installing booby traps throughout his house - using hunting rifles and explosives - to keep out his children, police said yesterday.

The former chemical engineer, aged 80, had apparently set the traps to prevent his children from getting into the house following a family dispute in the town of Aiseau-Presles near Charleroi, south of the Belgian capital, Brussels, the local Belga news agency said.

Police, who had worked from before dawn yesterday searching for and dismantling the snares, had yet to determine whether the man died from self-inflicted wounds or from setting off one of his own traps, the agency said.

"[The traps are in] the whole house," a police officer told the RTBF television network. "It is very, very dangerous."

The booby traps were set to go off with the opening of a door or some other makeshift trigger, the officer said.

i guess I need to rethink my plans..

Gun-Totting Grandad Gets His Terrorist Squirrel

Quote:
Nov 8, 10:00 am ET

LONDON (Reuters) - A squirrel which terrorized a British town by attacking people has been shot and killed by the grandfather of its latest victim.
Geoff Horth, enraged by the squirrel biting his two-year-old grand-daughter Kelsi Morley on the face, took up his airgun and hunted down the rogue rodent, the Sun newspaper said on Friday.

"When I tracked him down I was surprised how big he was. He came down a tree and headed for me, but I shot him before he jumped," the 61-year-old school caretaker told the newspaper.

The bad-tempered squirrel's reign of terror in the town of Knutsford in central England had made parents frightened to let their children out to play.

Animal experts say it is very unusual for squirrels to behave in such an aggressive way toward humans.

Horth was philosophical about his role as gun-totting local hero. "Its a shame he went nuts, but I couldn't let this little beggar hold the town to ransom," he told the newspaper.

Woman (50) kills would-be rapist

Herald Reporter
A 22-YEAR-OLD Chiweshe man died instantly after a 50-year-old woman he attempted to rape overpowered him when she tugged at his genitals.

The two had met at Rwere Business Centre in Chief Makope’s area in Chiweshe on November 1.

The man, Wonder Kazingizi (22), had offered to accompany Erica Maramba who had just got off a bus on her way to a memorial service at Mahere homestead in Mudzamiri Village.

On the way, Kazingizi proposed love to Maramba but his proposal was turned down.

He allegedly started fondling Maramba in an attempt to be intimate with her.

She maintained her calm and pretended she was accepting the advances.

When Kazingizi had relaxed and thought he was having it his way, Maramba went for the most delicate part of his body.

The elderly woman suddenly grabbed Kazingizi’s genitals and started pulling them until he lost consciousness.

Maramba continued pulling until Kazingizi died on the spot.

She further assaulted him with a stone on the head and knees.

The woman reported the incident to police at Bare Police Station two days later.

Mashonaland Central provincial police spokesperson Inspector Dawson Mahonde said the incident occurred around 8.30pm last Friday.

"Kazingi’s body was recovered on Monday by his father and has since been taken to Howard Hospital for a post-mortem," Insp Mahonde said.

He said the man was on police wanted list in connection with several other rape cases committed in the area.

Three Die Retrieving Phone from Latrine

Mar 14, 7:44 am ET

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Three Kenyans died trying to retrieve a mobile phone that slipped down an open-pit latrine while its owner answered a call of nature, a newspaper reported on Friday.
Anxious to recover her phone, the owner in the coastal town of Mombasa offered 1,000 shillings ($13.09) to anyone who would recover it, the Daily Nation said.

Well over half the Kenyan population of 30 million people lives on less than $1 a day.

The first to try -- a 30-year-old radio technician -- failed to resurface after disappearing down a ladder into the latrine.

His friend went after him but slipped and fell. The third casualty, trying to rescue the others, was hauled out of the pit by neighbors after he inhaled the fumes and lost consciousness.

The man was rushed to hospital but died on the way.

"The fumes inside must be extremely poisonous considering the short time it was taking to disable the retrievers," acting Mombasa police chief Peter Njenga was reported as saying.

The Daily Nation said police prevented a fourth man from climbing into the latrine and the search for the phone was eventually abandoned.
