Japan becoming 'paradise' to growing numbers of Nigerians

The number of Nigerians in Japan has increased rapidly, with 958 registering as residents in 2003, compared to just 193 who did so in 1990. Many of the arrivals to Japan would either overstay the permitted duration or marry a Japanese woman, giving them resident status.

According to immigration statistics, Nigerians are presently the most numerous of all African nationalities in Japan, with 2,405 registered as residents enjoying legal status. The breakdown includes 706 with spouse visas, 578 permanent residents, 10 who are spouses of permanent residents and 748 on short-term status. But if illegal sojourners and those who entered the country on forged passports, etc., are included, Tokusatsu Shinsengumi supposes the figure may be considerably higher.

"I picked up a Japanese woman on the street and was able to get her to marry me right away," boasts a Nigerian street tout who said he's been in Japan for eight years. "It's my ticket to stay in Japan."

Another common approach is to meet young women in foreigners clubs and discos and get them pregnant, the aim being marriage and legal resident status. There is even a site now on the Internet for Japanese women married to Nigerians that provides information on recipes for traditional foods, culture and customs, as well as offering a forum for airing concerns.

Their status as spouses of Japanese women stands as the main reason why the Japanese police are reluctant to roust Nigerian street touts in Kabukicho and Roppongi, the magazine suggests.

This presence has also resulted in Nigerian crime syndicates moving into Japan and setting down roots, which may transform Nippon into the organization's base of operations in the Far East. Tokusatsu Shinsengumi promises to provide more revelations in a second installment.

It's true, my african-american friend has lots of fun over in Japan. Japanese women (and quite a few white women) also dig the tanned thai guys too.

at my best friend's wedding last year, he invited his naval officer buds. three of the officers were black and all three of them had a japanese wife. two of the couples had halfie kids. he also invited his dental assistant, a black enlistee. he bought his japanese girlfriend.

i chit chatted with the three black officers. all three of them were a good buncha of guys. their wives were great wives too. they were very obedient and quiet. they never nagged their husbands once while we were all drinking unlike a lot of the other girlfriends and wives that were constantly nagging their boyfriends or husbands not to drink too much - i mean come on it was an open bar. they just sat at their table, talked and looked after the kids.

I'm surprised by this story, since all the other things I've read is that Japan is very unwelcoming to foreigners in general, although they do go crazy if you're a blue eyed american. Japan needs to open up its borders to let in more immigration as its work force population ages, but has been reluctant to do this.

Oh yeah, just what Japan needs --- more people trying to crowd into Tokyo and Osaka. Refer back to your own comments on immigration in the past, and tell me: why does America, which has 28 people per square km on mostly flat land, need fewer immigrants, while Japan, which has 350 people per square km in one of the world's most mountainous countries, need more?

And leaving aside your racist myth, popular among AAs, of Japanese "going crazy" for white Americans, I'll just say this:

1. The reason Japan has negative population growth is overcrowding and the high cost of raising kids. There is no space in the average house for a couple to have a second or third kid, unless they sleep in the bathtub or on the windowsill. And subsidized agriculture means Japanese spend a higher proportion of their income on basic foodstuffs than any other OECD country besidse Korea.

2. Immigrants won't help the birthrate problem --- HK, which has a huge rate of immigration from the mainland, has an even worse birthrate problem than Japan. It goes back to reason #1: If the average Japanese feels like an office job and a house in the suburbs isn't enough to support more than two kids, what do you think a Nigerian manual labourer is going to think of having a big family in his 400-sqft flat in the ghetto?

3. The overcrowding is not caused by a lack of land per-se, but due to ridiculous land-use policies and agricultural subsidies meaning far more land than necessary is given over to farmers. Free trade would do a lot more to relieve the overcrowding (and hence the population growth problem) than free immigration ever would.

They should give out immigration visas on the condition that they live out in the boonies where nobody wants to live... Oh yea, that and import American rice from Hawaii and California. Fuck the farmers. Re-appropriate the land which farmers live on and give it to new planned communities.

The funny part about this is a lot of the ones me and my friends have met try to pass themselves off as actual African-Americans rather than...well...African-Nigerian. I guess it works if the person you're interacting with has bad english skills, then you can just open up your hip-hop store, act like an American gangster, and try to talk American lingo and people will be like "wow! cool amerikan! yay!". But (my friends have more experience with it as they are on JET) an Asian-American doesn't get that leeway, one of my Chinese-American friends confronted one of them and was joking with them, saying "you aren't American! You have a Nigerian accent!" and got into an argument with them, with the Nigerian pretty much calling them a mainland chinese fraud and my friend telling the Nigerian to use some American lingo (Hella? crunk?) and where he was from; dude kept saying he was from LA, but couldn't name anywhere in LA. Just "LA". My friend's from Santa Monica...

Still, it's kind of sad, it seemed like from my personal experience that it was never believed that my friend was from the US (since he was APA) even though his english was perfect, whereas caucausian and african friends he was with (from spain and nigeria, respectively) always got the American treatment, and it was assumed their english was better.
