Lot Notes

Previously sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 20 March 1990, lot 522.

The meiping as a form is relatively rare in the Xuande period, and the painted designs are largely carried over from the previous Yongle reign. The present shape and design is very rare, the body is much more oviform with a narrower shoulder, while the mouth and neck are smaller in relation to the body. See a related vase with a similar design, in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Blue-and-White Ware of the Ming Dynasty, Book II (part 1), CAFA, Hong Kong, 1963, pls. 2-2a; the overlapping leaves and lotus scroll on the main body are very similar, including the stepped base enclosing the reign mark.

A similar example from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Palmer was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 17 January 1989, lot 572.
