Male teachers tugged by teen temptations

By virtue of a young girl's brutal death, public junior high school teacher Ken Fukumoto has earned the dubious honor of being one of Japan's top villains for 2001.

Twelve-year-old Noriko Kamiie died on the side of the busy Chugoku Expressway. She'd jumped from a car to escape Fukumoto, who had allegedly handcuffed her in anticipation of taking her to a love hotel because he wanted to experience sex with a virgin -- a girl about the same age as those he had been responsible for in the classroom.

But Weekly Playboy (10/2) says that perhaps Fukumoto's not the fiend he's been made out to be.

"Fukumoto's neither a pervert, nor is he cruel. He's just a normal teacher," says a 31-year-old male teacher from a Tokyo public high school.

Normal? A guy who does what Fukumoto is accused of doing?

"OK, the crime was abnormal. But being a teacher means holding something within your heart. The easiest way to release that stress is have fun outside with girls of the same age as those you teach," the teacher tells Weekly Playboy. "As far as I know, there're loads of teachers looking for an escape in telephone dating clubs or services (that serve as fronts for teen-age prostitution) or buying teen-age prostitutes outright."

Concurrence comes from a 34-year-old teacher at a different Tokyo public high school -- a man who also happens to be a member of an S&M club.

"I'm only slightly perverted," he tells Weekly Playboy. "From my eyes, Fukumoto was neither perverted, nor was he a pedophile. He simply crossed the boundary a teacher should never cross -- he was too weak in the classroom."

The teacher explains: "Girls grow quickly once they've entered junior high. They're not satisfied with their male classmates, so they turn their attentions toward their male teachers. They'll flick their skirts around, flash their panties or link arms with you. There're two or three like that in every class.

"Let's face it, teachers are only human. Male humans. Sometimes it's hard not to give into that temptation. Just about every teacher has to fight against that temptation. Fukumoto lost. He wasn't some sort of weirdo. He just wasn't strong enough."

Weekly Playboy says there may be some credence in what the teachers are saying. Government statistics show that 116 teachers were punished for indecently assaulting their pupils in fiscal 1999 -- a record figure more than 1.5 times larger than the result recorded the previous year. Rather than sex crimes teachers perpetrate against pupils being a matter of the individual involved, problems like this are more systematic, suggests the weekly.

Yu Kojima, a teacher training consultant, tends to agree.

"These sex attacks are occurring because governments and schools are not nurturing teachers," Kojima tells Weekly Playboy. "Teaching is a specialist job. And the only way to pick up expertise is at schools. It important to have an atmosphere where older teachers instruct younger colleagues and younger teachers work together to improve their skills. That's a 'teaching culture.' But that culture has become a shambles. Teacher development is entrusted entirely to the government and you're not going to get superior morality or quality going to a few government training sessions."

Kojima continues, "Kids change with the times. Girls in junior high wear make-up nowadays and can look incredibly sexy. We need to create a system where teachers are taught how to cope with those sorts of changes. These crimes resulted because there's no teaching culture of sorts in existence anymore."

Junior high school teacher Ken Fukumoto had a reputation for being calm and mild mannered. If what's being said about him now in the media is right, he's probably scum and wild mannered.
A native of Hyogo Prefecture, Fukumoto was arrested last week for illegal confinement resulting in the death of 12-year-old Noriko Kamiie.
Noriko was found clinging to within an inch of her life beside the Chugoku Expressway on July 24. She was handcuffed and had been run over by several vehicles. Paramedics rushed Noriko to a hospital in Kobe, but she was dead within hours of arriving.
Fukumoto initially denied anything to do with the little girl's disappearance and bizarre death, Flash (9/25) says. But, he eventually changed his tune, telling investigators that he had indeed taken Noriko for a ride in his car, that he had handcuffed her and, finally, that he had led to the little girl's demise.
Fukumoto apparently had a thing for handcuffing his sexual partners and he has since confessed that he was looking to have sex with Noriko because he "wanted to try a virgin."
Noriko, like many of the girls that Fukumoto met through telephone dating clubs, was allegedly handcuffed within moments of coming into Fukumoto's grasp. Unlike the other girls, who are believed to have led the police to the apparently errant educator, Noriko paid with her life for what was supposed to be a flight of fancy with Fukumoto, at 34 almost three times her tender age.
Fukumoto, Flash notes, has twice taken sick leave from teaching posts he has occupied since 1994, including one stint that began on June 15 this year.
"Our school principal went to see him at his apartment toward the end of July to check out whether he could come back to work," says Seiichi Akazawa, head teacher at the junior high school where Fukumoto worked. "He supposedly told the principal it was still too early to go back. He taught geography and history to all second-year students. But then, at the start of June, he just suddenly came out and said, 'I can't go through with this anymore.' He seemed pretty depressed, so the principal told him to take sick leave. He came in to teach on five occasions, but there was nothing there to suggest he'd got over his depression."
Some of Fukumoto's students were not surprised to see their sir in strife.
"He used to come into class, write some stuff on the blackboard, hand out sheets of paper to everybody, then sit on his desk and stare into space," one boy says. "Sometimes he'd bring in a laptop and looked like he was reading something over the Internet, but we didn't know what it was. In May, he told us that he'd met up with a girl introduced to him. Now that I think back about her, I guess she must have been one of the floozies he picked up from a dating club. He was quiet and had a reputation for keeping to himself, but whenever he gave tests back, he'd always ignore the boys and have something nice to say to the girls."
Not that the girls were too pleased with the attention Fukumoto lavished upon them, though.
"He used to tell the answers to test questions to the girls he liked. He kept in touch with a few girls who graduated from junior high school this year," one of the recent female graduates of Fukumoto's school tells Flash. "I was a bit shocked to learn that he'd been arrested, but I reckon he's capable of what he's supposed to have done. Thinking back on what he was like when he taught me, I realize now that he's just an old pedophile." -

but.....When I was 12, I was 163 cm tall, and a B-cup (American B-cup, which would have been more like a C or D here in Japan). Didn't pay much attention to my butt, but I imagine it was there.
