Cram school teacher’s ‘lolita complex’ takes deadly twist

Yu Hagino, a young man from a wealthy family who stood to gain the best things in life, is now accused of being the latest in an alarmingly long line of Japan’s “Rorikon” killers.

A student at posh Doshisha University, 23-year-old Hagino was arrested for the Dec. 10 murder of 12-year-old Sayano Horimoto, a little girl he taught at a cram school in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture.

And suspicion grows, judging by Shukan Jitsuwa (12/29), that Hagino was inspired to turn his relationship with the alleged victim from friendship to fiendship because of a “Rorikon,” the contracted Japanese word for “Lolita Complex,” the local parlance for pedophilia, drawing its name from the pubescent seductress of Vladimir Narbakov’s novel.
At one time, Hagino and Sayano had been friends. She had moved from Tokyo in the spring and soon began attending the cram school where Hagino worked as a part-time instructor. Some described them as looking like they were a close father and daughter. But things turned sour just before summer.

Sayano started calling Hagino “sickening” behind his back and went out of her way to avoid him.

“He whispered some really strange stuff in her ears,” a friend of the slain girl tells Shukan Jitsuwa. “And he started touching her.”

Many worried, especially as Hagino had stalked another pupil who attended the cram school, eventually driving her away.

In November, Sayano finally mustered up the courage to complain to a female teacher at the cram school about Hagino’s sexual harassment. Sayano stopped taking Hagino’s classes from the beginning of December.

Hagino appears to have become stressed out at being unable to meet Sayano, the weekly says, adding that he may have sought a violent solution to avoid the sexual harassment allegations from surfacing.

Hagino has been connected with aggravated robbery, stalking, pedophilia and domestic violence, though it wasn’t always that way. As a child, he was known for his cleverness, making top grades all the way through school and gaining entrance into Doshisha, where his grades continued to be toward the top of his class.

The first outward signs that Hagino had changed became evident in June 2003. He was arrested for stealing a purse from a woman’s bag at his university and bowling over the security guard who was trying to catch him as he ran away. Doshisha suspended Hagino for 18 months. The job he took on during his suspension from classes was as the cram school teacher where he met Sayano.

Hagino is also accused of causing problems at the cram school. He was known for gazing longingly at selected girls he was supposed to be teaching. Pupils generally regarded him as “weird” or “sickening.” Some complained that he was a “Rorikon,” while others were repulsed by his otaku tendencies.

Though it had only been in recent years that Hagino drew attention for apparently outlandish behavior, he had apparently never been far from trouble in his home from way back. In the swank Uji residential area where he grew up as an only child, neighbors used to remark on his mother’s child-rearing methods.

“She never gave him any pocket money. He used to be punished for even the tiniest thing. He’d often came racing out into the streets bawling and screaming, ‘Get me out of here, get me out of here,’” a neighbor tells Shukan Jitsuwa.

As he grew older — and bigger — the power relationship with his mother turned on its head. Soon, he was apparently beating her up.

“From the screams coming out of their house, it was almost as though the son was beating up the mother every day. The mother never said anything about it, though,” the neighbor tells Shukan Jitsuwa. “Apparently, (Hagino) acted like a lord inside the house. The son once bashed the mother so badly, she had to be carted off to a hospital in an ambulance.”
