Gabriel Sanchez-Nugra, 26, was arrested on Monday morning, April 20, at around 8 a.m. by East Hampton Village Police in front of the East Hampton train station on Railroad Avenue and charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, a misdemeanor. Bail was set at $350.

Police responded to a 911 call of menacing in front of the train station after Springs anti-illegal immigration protester Ricky King said that Mr. Sanchez-Nugra had threatened him with a 2-inch silver switchblade. When an officer arrived on the scene, Mr. Sanchez-Nugra was still holding the knife and police confiscated it.

Mr. King has been part of protests against illegal immigration in front of the 7-Eleven in Southampton and the East Hampton train station on several occasions. A few weeks ago, he held up a sign in front of the train station that read, “Mayor Rickenbach’s Slave Labor Market.”

Mr. Sanchez-Nugra is alleging that Mr. King started harassing him, saying “go back to your country,” cursing at him and using racial slurs, Village Police Chief Gerard Larsen said.

Chief Larsen said that police looked into filing charges of harassment against Mr. King, but because the detectives did not see the incident, there was insufficient evidence for such a charge.
“Because this is such a hot issue throughout the county, we also contacted the Suffolk County Hate Crimes Unit,” Chief Larsen said. “He concurred that there was not enough evidence to charge Mr. King with anything.” Village police also forwarded statements to the District Attorney’s office for review but have not received a response yet.

“The bottom line is words are words and a knife is something totally different,” Chief Larsen said.

Mr. Sanchez-Nugra did not have identification on him when he was arrested but his fingerprints did not match any warrants issued by other police departments.

On the subject of Mr. Sanchez-Nugra’s immigration status, “We don’t usually contact Immigration and Customs Enforcement unless it’s a felony,” Chief Larsen said.

Police departments like this one is what is wrong with the whole country. They don't bother to check the persons background when they are booked into jail. Because when a person will pull a knife on someone for just saying what they think? Give me a break!! Legal citizens still have rights in this country. As far as trying to charge someone with a hate crime for speaking their mind? Again give me a break!!! I never heard of such PC crap Ice should be called on every one of these so-called day laborers. Deport them and you would not have a problem like this. report as inappropriate

Amazing to call Hate Crime Unit for an alleged "name calling" and for protesting against "ILLEGAL ALIENS" which is a citizens right. I do not believe in that Hate Crime BS. Makes it too easy to accuse anyone of that .

And then to put a man on a 350.00 bond for pulling a knife and more then likely making deadly threats.

Not always the fault of the police since some counties tie their hands. They need to get 287(g) program if they do not have it now. report as inappropriate

This is only the beginning. The Illegal Aliens think they are entitled and expect sympathy. Let's see how long it takes for break-ins and robberies to start happening. The police department needs to contact ICE and have them all picked up. Southampton needs to take their community back while they still can. Last time I checked, we still have freedom of speech. It is a shame that Mr. King had to go through this, because he was standing up for what he knows is right. Our borders need to be secured and our immigration laws need to be enforced. This BS about immigrantion reform (which means Amnesty) is wrong. Stop picking and choosing what laws to enforce, enforce all laws!! report as inappropriate

Maybe if Ricky King would behave like a gentleman he wouldn't be threatened by anyone ! I would be interested if Mr. King had an arrest record. report as inappropriate
