Easter, 2009
Yesterday was Easter, the celebration by Western Christians of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 2 days after his crucifixion (Eastern Christian observers will celebrate Easter on April 19th). The religious observation of Easter also shares the day with many traditional secular springtime celebrations, including bonfires, egg hunts, bunnies and gifts of chocolate. As a day for quiet reflection, prayer, charitable acts and festive gatherings, here are some views of Easter across the globe this year. (35 photos total)

#14 so sad! :*( Wish better days to people and animals of Abruzzo.
Elbingerode is my mother's home village, and she has often talked about the bonfire night. I love the old photos she has of our relatives, their ash-blackened faces glowing and happy. Thank you for posting such wonderful photos!
#32 it's my favorite
Very nice photos! Soon as I saw the first one, I knew it had to be from our places, and it is :):):) 24th bunny is very cute also :D
C'est trop beau ! Merci
I like these pictures better than the holy week ones... #14 is sad though...
Great pics!!! Thank you
Just Terrific!
I loved #14 and #25.
Wishing better days of L'aquila.
And my home town Sao Paulo.
As always
Breathtaking Pictures.
Sorry for my english. :]
#20, annual easter wet t-shirt contest? What??
Great pictures!
Can I adopt the doggy in #14?
BELISIMA
#14 just about broke my heart :(
#26, what?
#32 is phenomenal
Photograph #14 of the dog waiting in the ruins where his owner died in the earthquake has a deep poignancy. I wonder who will befriend him and help cope with his lose.
I'm glad to see a photo from Hungary. (Especially I live near Holloko.) My bride also got her portion of water early in the morning today.
Fantastic images celebrating a variety of aspects of Easter. Love #20.. lots of emotion and movement in the shot. The light in #23 makes this picture of the Pope unique. Taimy Alvarez, DOP, Sun Sentinel, www.sun-sentinel.com/click
@Lcuas Rufino:
this is an old (at least ~400 years old I think) Hungarian tradition, see:

#26 looks looks somewhat scary... it could easily fit a horror/thriller movie.
C'est moi ou sur la #26 on dirait qu'il essaie de la noyer ?
Vraiment magnifique en tout les cas, comme d'habitude.
Thank you very much for these pictures. This shows EASTER as we Christians celebrate it. The last series Holy Week could easily be misinterpreted. Thank you!
Thanks you for bringing balance to your report about Easter! And thank you for the explanation to #27, not enough people are aware of how much persecution of Christians is going on in the world. Great variety of pictures!
Woohoo! Idaho is in the Big Picture!
I'd like to thank you for the photo from Hollókő... Actually, this tradition is ment to keep the fertility of women for the coming year. I'm glad to be part of it (and girls like it, too :-))
I love #30... it makes me happy for the polar bear.
The craftmanship of the man in the first two photos is amazing!
And then, seeing the #5 from my country, Romania, made my day. Thank you for the beautiful photos!
Podría saber con que tipo de cámara y lente, (si es posible la medida de apertura y foco) tomaron alguna de las fotos, por favor???
thanks for these wonderful, moving pictures I loved them all. My friend is in #15 - she is an army chaplain serving in Baghdad and it is especially good to see her singing to God.
Awesome pics!
Although in regards to the first picture, the city is called Vrhnika, not Vrhnik :)
#26 I used to live in Jamaica Beach.... My parents still have a rental house there.
Finally a photo from Romania !
Reponse A "Jybet" C'est comme ca qu'on baptise les gens.
#14 almost brought a tears to my eyes, god bless Italy!
big picture, you always deliver.
Not a single picture from the Masters?
Imagine there's no Heaven It's easy if you try
No hell below us Above us only sky
Imagine all the people Living for today
Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for And no religion too
Imagine all the people Living life in peace
Think about it !
I'd love to see pictures from the Orthodox Easter too..
I didn't think Holy Week pictures were bad at all, though this week's definitely has more variety. These are absolutely beautiful pictures, and you are doing us a great service by widening our knowledge in this way. God bless and Happy Easter!
Wow - what a contrast to the Holy Week photos from a day or so ago - http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2009/04/holy_week.html. There are two distinct stories in each. Thank you Boston Globe.
#35 is my favorite.
There would be a lot less violence in the world if everyone went to the candy store once a week instead of church.
@ #14: Orthodox easter is celebrated on April 19th as stated at the beginning, so you will have to wait just a little bit longer to see those pictures.
I too didn't mind the holy week pictures, I just didn't read into it so much like others. These pictures and the holy week pictures were great :)
#2 - cool!
#7 - that's one huge bonfire lol
#26 - the expression on the pastor's face looks like he wants to secretly drown her :O
Friday and again today... I realize that as a function of the Boston Globe you're obligated to pander to the cultists who believe in an unseen diety who had a son, somehow, and sent him to earth 2000 years ago... wait. My point is that this is a great blog, maybe the greatest photography blog going, and yet there is way too much RELIGION (myth, delusion, fantasy, whatever you want to call it) celebrated and given legitimacy by the choice of entry themes. Please, look to nature, science, art, news, engineering, politics, whatever, before doing another religious-themed post.
Spectacular
#2 great!
Thanks Geoff
#19 I didnt knew there were Christians in Pakisatan too ..
Great egg work . didnt jnew about this either .
Great work BigPicture ,
Cool Pictures. I pray to Jesus and I am not a Christian. I pray to Allah and I am not a Muslim. I pray to Buddha and I am not a Buddhist. TRUE..
Really enjoyed the pictures. #12 was my favorite.
I think, for #27, where the caption says, "threat of continued secular violence" that the word "secular" is incorrect? I think it should be "sectarian."
Beautifully descrlibed pictures of the Easter Festival all round the World......
What a beautiful way to celebrate the resurrection of Christ with the whole world.
People always find something to celebrate. wht about John conner's Birthday ? lets celebrate that too....
@Matt: How much violence do u see in these pictures?
Trult beautiful pictures!
A great presentation of Easter around the world, including many cultures and themes. Just remember that if God had not become man and came to earth as a human to forgive mankind of our sin and our rebellion against Him in order that we mught have eternal life, there would be no Easter, but only darkness! From I John 1:1 " That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched-this we proclaiim concerning the Word of Life. Without teh "religious theme" the rest means nothing..
About #20:
"In Hungary, Transylvania, Southern Slovakia, Kárpátalja, Northern Serbia - Vojvodina and other territories with Hungarian-speaking communities, the day following Easter is called Locsoló Hétfő, "Watering Monday". Water, perfume or perfumed water is often sprinkled in exchange for an Easter egg."

nice collection!!!
picture 8 was taken on april 13 since the bonfire was lit in the evening of april 12 ;)
( i was there^^)
typical Sovakia Easter tradition pour water and cat-o'-nine-tails ;)
Do you know the existence of a country called Spain?
It's surprising to see how you forget always my country. And more when it has one of the most spectacular Easter of the world.
http://www.mon-photo.com/Europe/Espana/sevilla/es.htm
wow
Picture #14 is just so awfully beautiful.
Happy, happy Easter to all!
Glad to see a pic from little Bulgaria, again and - did you notice the text under the last photo? Hope you won't miss it :)
Thanks, again, Big Picture :)
Surprised to see no mention of #4, it's by far the most poignant of the set and in some sense contrasts strongly as the practice of Christ's message vs the ritual that surrounds it. I used to drive by the Mission in LA regularly and while the area is depressing in its poverty I find myself strangely missing it.
@sergio
If you look at this collection, you will see a number of pictures from Holy Week in Spain.
http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2009/04/holy_week.html
While reading the comments I found the usual small number of hateful and anti-religious messages. It's a shame. There is a party going on and until they die, the people who made these comments will always be invited to participate.
Excellent pics. Next week, I would really love to see a similar collection with Orthodox Easter as its subject.
#22, I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure Jesus was not crucified and buried at the same spot.
No. 14 Proves that Dogs > Cats
Argentina Present !!!
"Reponse A "Jybet" C'est comme ca qu'on baptise les gens."
Je sais, je sais, je me suis fait baptisée de la même façon, c'est juste le regard du gars ne me semble pas très agréable ^^
where are the pictures of the Dutch Saxon bonfires? They are much bigger than the Germans' depicted here (double or even triple the size). There's a serious competition in building the highest bonfire between neighbourhoods.
And no, Dutch is not from Denmark!
wonderful,wonderful collection!!
John Lennon is dead.
---God
Picture 24 is my favorite. The rabbit is so sweet!!!!
wow .. ô³ãàñîá³)))
Praise the Lord.
Amazing. Good Collection.
Feeling of having participated in the Easter Vigil throughout the world .
What a great way to remember that WE are part of a great big world
Well done! Amazing pictures!
Amazing pictures, thank you!
Those are really great, I'm glad I found this article.
The picture of Lizard Butte really caught my eye. I grew up in Caldwell and
have been to Lizard Butte several times.
What diversity!
Brazil is the coolest for making giant chocolate eggs.
Great photos.
Fantastic. Utterly fantastic. It is true, that while we celebrate easter it should
always be kept in mind the ultimate price that Jesus paid for us all regardless
of ethnic background.
#15 includes my husband. Thank you for letting me see him!
two pictures from Scituate, i hear it was a great service down by the lighthouse, the historic lighthouse where the army of two saved the south shore from a british invasion during the revolutionary war.
Picture#29 is a great, all the girls in white sari looks very pretty !!!!
Pete, I am an an atheist and I still enjoy seeing these images. I also liked the images posted last week. There's no reason for me to be offended at the Big Picture making posts about something that is culturally important, regardless of whether I share the same belief.
I like seeing the variety in how belief is expressed, and also what the celebrations have in common with other religions. The procession of the Mary statues reminds me a lot of other celebrations where statues or shrines are carried through the streets. And including a non-Christian at the end was a good choice.
This brought me back, once again, to the true meaning of life.
Thank you for this beautiful compilation of the Blessed Easter Celebration/Preparation in so many different countries and in diffirent and difficult situations. Just goes to show LOVE WILL KEEP US ALIVE!
& that
THERE's ALWAYS HOPE!
Happy Easter (Pasca) to one and all!
NO Jesus NO Peace! Know Jesus Know Peace!
fantastic!
I cannot beleive you havent post anything about Spain´s "Semana Santa"
In India lots of people are converted to Christianity , let me bring to notice of the world , in india , the so called missionaries they don’t do any thing good , the just take advantage of the people’s weakness( poverty , sickness, illitrate, who don’t know about himself/hereself) they give money and ask to convert to christian, this become like marketing for christian missionaries, ones I had been to Gospel (Pentecost) , the paster says this month target is to convert 2000 hindus to christian, I will be pray to Jesus to give power. He says : he will bring down all the flags of india and raise the christian flag .
So if this what the christianity is in india , now I know why jesus died for the sin of people.
Sadaya Kumar, Bangalore , INDIA.
#14, nothing to do with Easter, but that's the one I keep recalling from this grouping of photos. Oh.. that and #2. WOW!
what a wonderful tribute and reminder of how great and wonderful our God is!!!
Thank you for it!!
"We’re living in the 21st century and people still [work to] impress invisible superheroes who live in outer space"
and in #4 a child is homeless in the richest coutry in the world...
What?! No San Francisco Hunky Jesus Competition!?
I respect their beliefs. ý wish all think&pray for peace.
Number 35 is my favorite. A secure, contemplative, and peaceful photo. I like this gentleman's style.
i also love 35. such a pure beautiful peace on his face, i wish everyone some of that!
Good photos. But I don't appreciate the comments in photo#27 as they seem to be politically motivated.
This is America !
Now, on "the Big Picture.com" 50% of the pictures deal with religion ...
Our Father, who are in heaven, Stay there !
"la religion c'est l'opium du peuple"
GREAT work... my favorite is No. 20 and No. 14 it´s just breathtaking.!!!
Poor hope, hope hope is better :)
