Businessmen beat stiff times at sex shop seminar

With once mighty Japanese companies no longer able to guarantee lifetime employment, an increasing number of corporate warriors are ditching their suits to become entrepreneurs - in the thriving sex industry.

Some prospective pimps may fret that setting up in the dog-eat-dog world of smutty business, however, is no easy job for an amateur.

But, there's no need to worry, Shukan Jitsuwa assures us, because there is an open seminar for aspiring sex businessmen where they can learn everything there is to be known about how to open your own sex shop from scratch.

"We've been getting a great response from our clients since we opened a seminar for sex industry beginners," says a spokesman for the Kabushikigaisha Gino Shinko Jigyodan, which provides the popular course. "Up to 30 people can attend the seminar at any one time, but we always receive over 100 applications from those want to have a crack at the sex trade. Many of them are salarymen in their 30s to 50s."

Currently, three different seminars are available: for those who want to manage a full-fledged, meaty massage parlor; another for businesses that don't require special investment on facilities, such as call girl services or mail-order sex toy retailing; or for e-entrepreneurs planning to open up porn sites on the Internet.

The seminars include lectures on laws regulating the sex industry, marketing theories to attract patrons and then make them to come back again and how to read the ever-changing needs of patrons.

"If those aspiring gentlemen decide to start their own business, we will introduce professional advisors who are at the forefront of the sex industry," the spokesman says.

However, not all preparations and investments guarantee success, Jitsuwa warns.

"I spent 5 million yen in signboards and another 3 million yen to install a shower in my basement shop. You know anything to do with water costs a hell of a lot to if your shop is located in the basement," says a sex club owner who runs his shop in the Kabukicho district of Tokyo's Shinjuku-ku. "Moreover, it is a well-known fact that the ground under Kabukicho is filled with the bodies of people killed by war-time bombing.
