Cushions made of subway seat cloth go on sale at station in Sendai

A cushion made out of cloth used for subway seats. (Mainichi)

SENDAI -- Cushions made of subway seat cloth have gone on sale at a station here.

The Sendai City Transportation Bureau and a workshop for the handicapped in Sendai have jointly produced the orange, smooth-textured cushions out of material used for repairing seats on Sendai municipal subway trains.

The cloths became available after the city recently renovated the subway cars and changed the colors of the seat cloths.

Members of a local handicapped center hand stitched the cushions. The material was apparently difficult to sew due to its toughness.

The cushions are sold at 2,000 yen each at Sendai Station along the Nanboku subway line. There are only 150 cushions available.

Last "Galaxy Express" leaves Tokyo Station

Railway enthusiasts take photos of the last Ginga Express as it leaves Tokyo Station on Friday night. (Mainichi)

About 2,000 railway fans flooded a Tokyo Station platform to bid farewell to the last "Ginga" sleeper express train bound for Osaka on Friday, waving as the final train departed at 11 p.m. with a whistle.

The 59-year-old Ginga (Galaxy) Express was abolished as the JR railway group revised train schedules across the country on Saturday.

The now defunct Japanese National Railways (JNR) began operating the Ginga Express between Tokyo and Osaka as a night train in 1949, and was popular with salaried workers particularly during the rapid economic growth of the 1960s and the early 70s.

However, its popularity declined in recent years as the bullet train sped up and less expensive night buses became popular. By December 2007, the average bed occupancy rate of the train had declined to about 40 percent.

However, the 260 beds on the last train were booked up only 30 minutes after the railway operator began accepting orders on Feb. 14.

The Yomiuri Shimbun

YOKOHAMA--A doctor has been arrested on suspicion of assault for allegedly losing his temper and striking a ticket inspector in the face when asked to show his ticket, police said.

Yokohama's geriatric manner police to turn crazed commuters into tranquil traingoers

The Japanese have a reputation for being well-mannered, but anyone who's ever caught a train here would know that it's not always deserved. Finally, though, a railroad operator has come up with an idea to get people behaving properly with the Yokohama Municipal Subway by appointing manner police, who'll start operating later this month, Yomiuri Weekly (3/23) says.

The subway's manner cops -- officially, they're being referred to as "manner upgraders" -- will ride on the Green Line in pairs on weekday afternoons accompanied by security guards, just in case anyone takes exception to their admonitions for bad behavior.

Each of the 11 manner cops has received formal instruction from a corporate training company, learning the correct manners in addressing people, how to approach to strangers and phrases to use that make it simpler to get a point across to others.

"Even though people talk about manners, you'd be surprised how tough it was to come up with definitions of what exactly proper behavioral manners for trains are," a spokesman from the City of Yokohama Transportation Bureau tells Yomiuri Weekly. "We're going to keep looking into this from now on, but for the time we're just going to issue gentle warnings being anybody who's clearly being out of line."

The types of infractions the subway's manner cops will be on the lookout for include people standing near carriage entrances and making it tough for others to get on or off the trains, those taking up more than one seat and others who are using their mobile phones, including to send e-mail.

Another notable feature of the initial 11 manner cops who'll work the line is that most of them are old, with four in their 70s and two in their 80s, the oldest being 81. The six men and five women will also receive a token payment of 500 yen an hour for the three hour shifts they perform.

The manner cops are raring to go when the city's transportation bureau unleashes them on the trains from March 30.

"There are some youngsters who behave in an eye-catching way, but you've got to be careful if you say anything to them because it could end up in a fight. Fortunately, I've been trained over the best way to approach these people," one 70-something man who'll become a manner cop tells Yomiuri Weekly. "I want to put all my life experience to good use." JR East to launch online booking service
Wednesday, March 19, 2008

East Japan Railway Company (JR East) will launch an English online reservation service for bookings from overseas at 2 pm (JST) on March 25, 2008.

Dubbed the “JR East Shinkansen Reservation”, the service allows travellers to reserve seats on the five Shinkansen (bullet train) and four limited express routes in the JR East area which extends from just south of Tokyo to the top of Japan’s main island, Honshu.

The introduction of the new reservation service means that advance bookings can be made on the Narita Express service which runs from Narita Airport to Tokyo, and on the bullet trains to the Honshu ski fields.

Users are required to register once with a credit card to use the service (free of charge). Reservations can be made from one month up until 5 pm (JST) three days prior to the day of travel. Japan Rail Pass and JR East Pass holders can also utilize the service.

The reservation site also provides fare and timetable information, giving international visitors the newfound convenience of planning and booking their train journeys online.

More than 8 million international travellers visited Japan in 2007 – more than a 13 per cent increase on 2006 figures. According to JR East, there was a marked increase in FITs using the rail system in 2007, and it is expected that the new reservation system will be a useful tool to further promote rail travel in Japan.

Railroad offers free travel to passengers dressed as ninja

An Iga Tetsudo employee announces the company will take over running the railroad in October last year. (Mainichi file)

IGA, Mie -- Passengers dressed in ninja costumes will be given free travel along the Iga Tetsudo line from April 1 to May 6 to mark the city's popular ninja festival, railroad officials said.

Iga Tetsudo, which took over the running of the old Kintetsu Iga Line in October last year, is making the offer as part of the Iga Ueno Ninja Festa, a festival that celebrates the Mie Prefecture city's links with the ancient stealth art of ninjutsu.

Each year, the festival is held centered on Iga's main districts, with ninja being the focus. Most events have a ninja theme, including the chance to try out ninja shuriken throwing stars. One of the more popular attractions at the festival is the practice of lending out ninja costumes and it is quite common to see families with everyone walking around the streets in ninja garb during the festival period.

Huge 'Gundam' robot set up outside station near anime's production studio

The "Mobile Suit Gundam" robot is pictured outside Kami-Igusa Station in Tokyo's Suginami-ku.

A 3-meter-high bronze statue of a robot from the popular anime "Mobile Suit Gundam," has been erected outside a station near the production studio that created the anime.

The bronze statue was unveiled Sunday outside Kami-Igusa Station on the Seibu Shinjuku Line in Tokyo's Suginami-ku, near anime production studio Sunrise. The ward set up the bronze statue as a way to revive the local area, after receiving a petition from about 2,400 residents.

"We want the area to develop through this, just like a youth riding on Gundam," Suginami-ku Mayor Hiroshi Yamada said at the unveiling ceremony.

The statue is cast with one of its hands extended to the sky. On Sunday the station changed the musical sound played when trains leave the station to the anime's theme song, "Tobe Gundam."

Fukuoka pen pusher attacks railway attendant

SHIMONOSEKI -- A Fukuoka Prefectural Government employee has been arrested after he unleashed a drunken attack on a Japan Railway station attendant trying to help him, police said.

Tomokazu Tanaka, 32, a technician with the prefectural government from Yamaguchi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, was arrested for assault.

Tanaka denies the allegations.

Fukuoka Prefectural Government officials apologized over the weekend incident.

"It's sincerely regrettable that an official has been arrested," a government spokesman said. "We want to quickly determine the facts behind the incident and deal with the matter severely."

Police said that Tanaka punched a 50-year-old station attendant in the chest at about 11 p.m. on Saturday on a platform at JR Shin-Shimonoseki Station.

Tanaka had been traveling in the last carriage on a train going from Hakata to Shin-Shimonoseki, but got off. The train was being put into depot, but Tanaka tried to get on again. When the station attendant tried to stop him from getting on the train, Tanaka turned around and assaulted him, police said.

Body found on tracks of Tokyo railway line

A person was found dead on the tracks between two stations on the Tobu Isesaki Line in Tokyo on Monday, prompting railway officials to temporarily halt train services, police said.

Police said the driver of a rapid-service train bound for Asakusa spotted the body between Nishiarai and Takenotsuka stations in Tokyo's Adachi-ku at about 8:45 p.m. on Monday.

Investigators said the victim appeared to be a male. It appeared that he had climbed over a fence onto the tracks, and had been hit by another train.

Trains between Kitasenju and Tobu Dobutsu Koen were halted for about 1 1/2 hours after the discovery, resulting in the suspension of 72 trains, affecting about 60,000 passengers.

Teen arrested for fatally shoving man into path of train

The platform from which Kariya was pushed is pictured at JR Okayama Station on Wednesday.

OKAYAMA -- A 38-year-old man died after being shoved into the path of a train at a railway station here, law enforcers said, adding that they had arrested a teenager who claimed responsibility.

The victim was identified as Kuniaki Kariya, a prefectural government worker from Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture.

Police said Kariya was waiting for a train at JR Okayama Station, when he was suddenly pushed onto to the railway tracks and hit by a train.

Officers who rushed to the station platform found an 18-year-old from Osaka Prefecture who admitted having pushed Kariya onto the tracks, and immediately arrested him. The 18-year-old, whose name has been withheld because he is a minor, indicated that he had deliberately pushed the worker.

"I thought that if I killed someone I could go to prison. I didn't care who it was," police quoted the teen as saying.

Kariya was taken to a hospital, but died about five hours later from massive injuries.

Osaka railroad introduces water-free urinals

Water-free urinals installed at selected stations run by the Nankai Electric Railway Co. (Mainichi)

OSAKA -- Nankai Electric Railway Co. has introduced water-free urinals at 18 men's toilets in stations along its lines, estimating it will save 22,000 tons of water and about 6 million yen in utility bills, railroad officials said.

The urinals are covered in a low friction material to make sure condensation does not build up on them, and there is no need to flush after use.

"Water is a limited resource. We want to gradually increase the number of stations that have these urinals," a Nankai spokesman said.

Urine deposited into the urinals flows into special cartridges, which also reduce odors. The water-free urinals are cleaned out in a manner more hygienic than typical water-flush systems.

Train siren scares man into fatal fall

A man who died after falling in front of an oncoming train at JR Shinjuku Station over the weekend may have been startled by a warning blast its driver gave as it came up behind him, police said.

Killed in the tragedy was Eiji Natsumi, 36, a company employee from the Tokyo suburb of Machida.

Natsumi was struck and killed by a JR Sobu Line train at Shinjuku Station at around noon on Sunday.

Police said Natsumi had been walking along the edge of the platform when a train approached him from behind and its driver let out a warning alarm that startled the company worker, forcing him to lose his footing and fall in front of the oncoming train.

The tragedy caused delays of up to 23 minutes for 14 trains and affected an estimated 9,000 travelers.

TOKYO: New elevated railway rolls into action
A new railway system linking Arakawa Ward with the western part of Adachi Ward started operations Sunday.

The Nippori Toneri Liner links the 9.7-kilometer section between Nippori Station in Arakawa Ward and Minumadai Shinsui Koen Station in Adachi Ward in 20 minutes.

The Tokyo metropolitan government, which operates the railway system, initially expects about 51,000 people to use the line each day.

The metropolitan government spent 126.9 billion yen on the system, which uses elevated tracks and is automatically operated by computers.

East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) is set to introduce "super-green cars," equivalent to first class on international flights, on its Tohoku Shinkansen Line bullet trains, company officials said.

JR East intends to initially connect such luxurious carriages to only three of its bullet trains using new-model cars when the Tohoku Shinkansen Line is extended beyond Hachinohe Station in Aomori Prefecture to Shin-Aomori Station at the end of the 2010 business year. It will then increase the number of trains with super-green cars.

Super-green cars will be more luxurious than existing green cars.

The new-model bullet trains that are being developed are designed to travel at a maximum of 320 kilometres per hour. However, they will be initially operated at lower speeds. Their maximum speed will be raised to 320 kilometres per hour by 2013.
