Advocates object to immigration arrest

Associated Press - February 25, 2009 3:44 PM ET

TAVARES, Fla. (AP) - Civil rights advocates are objecting to the detention of an undocumented Honduran woman who they say was illegally arrested by local police near Orlando and then turned over to federal authorities.

Rita "Fany" Cote, 23, was arrested last week after Tavares police officers responded to a domestic violence call involving Cote's sister and sister's boyfriend.

The officers asked everyone to produce identification and then took Cote to the Lake County jail after they ran her name through an immigration database and found she had entered the country illegally when she was 15. She then was turned over to Border Patrol agents.

Civil rights advocates say immigration law should be enforced by federal agents not local police officers.
