A YOUNG woman brutally assaulted in a racist attack in Aberdeen today revealed her sight has been permanently damaged.

Lucy Newman, 22, suffered a broken nose, broken cheekbone and nerve damage to her left eye in the racist attack.

Doctors say Lucy’s sight will never fully return to normal.

Police today said their inquiries had concluded and confirmed the vicious attacker, who shouted: “Go back to England!” before punching Lucy, has yet to be caught.

However, it was understood CCTV footage from Union Street on January 10 was being examined by forensics experts in the hope of identifying Lucy’s attacker.

Her family today said they were disappointed to hear the police probe had concluded.

Lucy, of Gourdon, south of Stonehaven, said: “I’m only 22 and I’m having problems with my eyes already.

“Two nerve endings in my eye were severed when I was punched and the doctors say they can’t be repaired.

“The doctors said the muscle that controls how my eye focuses is now dormant and – if it does come back – it won’t return to normal.

“I have to go back in a couple of weeks time to be tested and I might end up getting glasses. Reading for any length of time gives me headaches and my eyesight goes really fuzzy from time to time.”

She added a claim has been submitted to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority and she could receive at least £4,000.

A Grampian Police spokesman confirmed investigations into the Aberdeen street attack were ongoing.
