Arizona sheriff parades illegal immigrants in chains
AP Photo/Ross D. Franklin Approximately 200 convicted illegal immigrants handcuffed together are moved into a separate area of Tent City, by orders of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, for incarceration until their sentences are served and they are deported to their home countries Wednesday in Phoenix. |
Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio -- the self-annointed "toughest sheriff in America" -- is drawing the media spotlight again for his latest publicity stunt: parading illegal immigrants in chains and handcuffs. The Arizona Republic reports:
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio marched 220 chained illegal immigrant inmates into a segregated enclosure of Tent City Wednesday afternoon, despite protests from some County officials and civil rights groups who thought the procession violated human rights.
The 220 inmates walked from the Durango Jail complex to Tent City near 35th Avenue and Durango Street in Phoenix about 1 p.m. Wednesday. The inmates were chained at the feet and wore handcuffs while carrying bags full of personal belongings. The procession took about 15 minutes.
According to Arpaio the inmates will not be treated any differently than other inmates with two exceptions: Arpaio plans to have the inmates instructed in U.S. immigration law and have the inmates who violate jail rules put in a chain gang to work to clean areas of the Valley affected by human trafficking.
Protesters and some County officials believe the move was degrading and unnecessary."Shackling and marching fellow human beings for all to see is not in line with the values of the American people. While Guantanamo (Bay) is being closed, another one is being started in Arizona," Kevin Appleby, the Director of Migration and Refugee Policy with U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said.

That just puts more of a tarnish on our image. If these guys commit crimes, convict them, sentence them. But treating them inhumanely is not going to help their cause. Sheriff Joe is another media hound dog. What good does do this do for the American people? Send them back fine but parading them in front of millions is supposed to do exactly what? Guess we haven't learned from our many mistakes.

Way to go Sheriff. We need to do this with all of the inmates so that they will not like being inmates and not commit crimes.
Posted by: BK at February 5, 2009 10:46 AM
Thank you, Sherrif Arpaio. Finally, someone with a set of cahones big enough to let these criminals know that what their doing is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. We need more law enforcement officials like him who are not afraid to be politically correct and are willing to keep America a great nation.

Way to Go, Joe! You are DOING what has to be done to curb the tide of illegal immigrations, if not in the country, then in your county. We need more people in the country like this.

I dont see anything wrong with it. But why not do something to people who deserve it like child abusers. Parading these people isn't doing anything wrong.

Nice photo. The inmates seem to be enjoying the notariety. Reading of immigration law seems appropriate.

Enjoy it while it last xenophobes because this will probably be Sheriff Joe's last term. I really doubt he will be able to get re-elected at 80 years old in 2012 no matter what publicity stunts he pulls. So sit back and enjoy the show because I think it's just going to get more outrageous every year.

YES! we need more of this! Besides they arent being treated any different than the other criminals in that jail. This sheriff is known for his tactics, does an illegal criminal deserve better than an american criminal?
Posted by: MaggieMoo at February 5, 2009 11:08 AM
WAT TO GO JOE, SHOULD PUT THEM IN PINK UNDERWEAR AND WALK THEM THERE AND BACK A COUPLE OF TIMES JUST MAYBE THEY MIGHT WANT TO GO BACK FROM WHERE THEY CAME FROM.
Posted by: dog at February 5, 2009 11:08 AM
Why should we pay for them? He should have put them on a train and sent them to Mexico City and Guatemala and all points in between.

Way to go sheriff Joe, God, how I wish you were a sheriff in Texas. These people are prisoners and they belong in a chain gang, keeps them from running off and someone having to chase them. I only wish every state in the union had a Sheriff Joe. I am actually thinking about retiring in Arizona mostly because of the great man, maybe some relief to be had somewhere from the infestation of illegals dragging this country into a cesspool.

you can tell Kevin Appleby, the Director of Migration and Refugee Policy with U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, to round up all the catholic priests who have molested unsuspecting children and teenagers, and add them to the Sheriff's chain gang

I got an idea...Don't break and enter, Don't forge documents and lie, Don't cheat our system, Don't steal from America because your Country isn't as good...it's the 10 commandments...8,9,10...
8. Thou shall not steal
9. Thou shall not bear false witness
10. Thou shall not covet
Send them home and save their eternal souls, the whole World is not their Catholic Church where they can go once a year and ask a Priest for forgiveness...Get forgiveness from Americans by leaving and according to the Bible paying back twice what you have stolen...

Here's an idea: Offer them to stay in prison for 4 years, straight time, or serve the Army/ USMC as Infantry for 5 years and then get legal residency and then they can file for permanent residence and become productive members of our society? Sounds crazy, I know, but just an idea...Or lock them up, send them home, and then lock them up again when they come back and continue to waste our money like this?
Posted by: G-Man at February 5, 2009 11:19 AM
What, Did the Sherriff Do something wrong? or did you hear the word ILLEGAL Immigrants. So I guess you will not have to join the chain gang if you come into US legalllllllll
Posted by: R.C.Cooper at February 5, 2009 11:19 AM

violation of OUR LAWS when they sneak into the USA. They want to get all the benefits afforded to US CITIZENS, but don't want to do it the RIGHT WAY. Tattoo them and send them back to where they came from, and if they return again take drastic action against them

This is very degrading!! Why doesn't he go do this to child molestors or murderers? People who have actually committed a crime?? He needs to be put off sheriff, someone in Arizona please dethrone him!!!! Get him out of your jail system!! Put more important matters to work, other than some measely immigrants & parading them around like a prize from hunting season!!
Posted by: Argelia Moctezuma at February 5, 2009 11:23 AM
If Sheriff Arpaio were in charge of the Department of Homeland Security we could begin to see some REAL enforcement of our immigration laws.
If everyone understood the costs of illegal immigration to this country and the violence inflicted on Americans by illegal aliens, there would be an even greater outrage than the one that stopped the amnesty last year.
Posted by: rollinson at February 5, 2009 11:26 AM
Until the new Harris County Court House was built all of the jail inmates were taken in a chain gang across the public streets were anyone could see them. This was just the way it was, and nobody thought this procession violated human rights. So if this is the best way to move the illegal aliens to tent city, so be it.
Posted by: exconvict at February 5, 2009 11:28 AM
Last time I checked, criminals don't have rights. There was nothing harsh about this, no one was injured or died. Embarrassment, definitely!!! They're in this country illegally which goes back to my first comment. They are criminals!!!!
Posted by: Jason at February 5, 2009 11:30 AM
G-man there are already programs such as what you mention where folks can get a fast track to green card and citizenship if they join the military. And it doesn't sound crazy, because many of these illegal immigrants came from Mexico, and Mexican Americans have served in the military with great valor and distinction, having won more Congressional Medals of Honor than any other ethnic group. However this Sheriff Arpoho is a big showman, and mainly full of himself. If he keeps getting attention, he'll keep doing more, but nothing that he does makes a difference--it's just a show to appeal to the lowest common dominator.
Posted by: jason at February 5, 2009 11:30 AM
Your right Argelia, this is degrading. However, keep in mind this quote from the article: "According to Arpaio the inmates will not be treated any differently than other inmates". I have visited AZ many times, you see this with other inmates but, as usual, the media is sensationalizing these people. They do deserve the same rights as those in GITMO, and that would be NONE. They are not citizens. Having them here is costing tax dollars; they should be breaking rocks.

Jason- thanks. I know that me and my brother came to this country when we were kids and once we hit 18, he joined the USMC and I, the Amry, both as Infantry and both ended up as Machine Gunners, go figure that. Anyways, we both always appreciated what this country did for us and our family, so it was only right that we serve her in the military. I bet that many of the illegals don't know about serving in the military, since their numbers are low, and that way, they can both get on the fast track and serve this great nation. Wonder how many of these Naturally born chicken hawks ever served?

As Brazoria County becomes more and more saturated with the influx of illegal aliens, we need a sheriff who is on the same page as Sheriff Joe Araipo. I have lost my job three times in a row because of employers who would rather pay an illegal alien less than me. If President Hussein wants to pass a stimulus package, the best one he could come up with would be one that rounds up and deports all the illegal aliens. It is mainly the illegal aliens that have eroded the foundations of our economy. Sheriff Joe knows this, and is approaching a solution to the problem in the only way he can under the circumstances. And the bleeding heart liberals are a major obstacle to the solution of the overall problem.

There is sure a chitload of them! What's so humiliating about the criminals being paraded from one end of the place to the other? Not like we all don't see the illegals parading around all over our cities and towns and not to mention protesting in our streets waving their country of origin's flag! I don't think that Americans being detained in a foreign country for the same crime would be treated any better as a matter of fact this would be a welcome treatment if this is the worst that they would have to endure!

Posted by: Mike VI at February 5, 2009 12:15 PM
The nature of all incarcerations at any county jail are designed to inhibit future visits. (See Rambo 1st Blood) Desperate measures for desperate times I suppose is his thinking. Something should have been done about this long ago but the voters keep sending him back. They're the ones to question. BTW-there ain't too many bleeding heart liberals in Texas, let alone Brazoria county. A Texas liberal may not believe in the death penalty but they'll kill you in their backyard at night. I am a Democrat and so is my wife. She thinks land mines and cattle cars will help the illegal flow rate to lower drastically. I think an active chip in their passport will help w/the rest, but none of this will work with our past govt's polices. Send 'em back and tell to fix their own country or die trying. In the mean time, women here need to demand access to the selective service registration for their gender.

Should they have broken them into small groups and done it 5 at a time taking upwards of 10 hours?
I know, maybe they should have driven them in pattywagons and spent the gas to vill dozens of vehicles to drive 2 minutes.
Or is it because they are being segregated... Because last I check with segregate all criminals from society... Are we complaining that criminals shouldn't be segregated from criminals now?
Take it as it is people, an efficient transfer from point A to point B...

WHAT THIS SHOWS IS A COMPLETE LACK OF COMPASSION BY THIS SHERIFF.............................
To treat individuals so disrespectfully not only instigates the maltreatment of all immigrants but also shows the sheriff's complete lack of compassion for another human being. We cannot assume to know why these prisoners are in chains, yet I would suspect that these men are in the country for anything from crossing the border to work to ... No human being should be paraded around like this. This sheriff lacks the judgement necessary to run the prison. He should be dismissed from duty.

Yeah enjoy your time in the sun closet racists. the NY times had it right when it said racists have been hiding behind the "we're just against illegals" badge. There would have already been an amnesty but you guys exploited 9/11 to hide behind your racist agenda as well.
These people are human beings whose only crime is to want a better life. Many came here as children too without any choice and this is the only country they know. So here is what's going to happen: these people are eventually going to be legalized because it's the right thing to do and they contribute to this country. So you can hold on kicking and screaming the way your parents did when blacks wanted rights, or you can join the side of the good and give these people their freedom.
The choice is yours, but then there are many people in Texas who don't think the slaves should have been freed. This is modern day slavery since when the choice is between your family starving and crossing the border illegally, there really isn't much of a choice.

Did anyone actually read the story?
"Approximately 200 convicted illegal immigrants handcuffed together are moved into a separate area of Tent City, by orders of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, for incarceration until their sentences are served and they are deported to their home countries Wednesday in Phoenix."
These are CRIMINAL illegal aliens, they are being incarcerated to serve a sentence for committing other crimes (like burglary, theft, assault etc.) , not for being in the country illegally. Sheriff Joe is treating them no differently than he would treat a citizen of this country who had been convicted of the same crimes. How did it escape everyones attention that this is not an ICE detention facility, but an Arizona Criminal Justice facility? The media as usual is trying to "make news" by sensationalizing the fact that this group of prisoners happens to be illegal aliens.

I applaude the sheriff for his tactics. The poor illegals...sniff sniff...Bullshit...The reason so many criminals and illegals commit crimes is because of our permissive liberal government. Jail is not meant to be fun...It is punishment!!! If they are degraded, so be it...They should have not commited the crime and they would not be there. Get real. If one came to your home and raped the women there, would you feel so sympathatic? I think not...When we start treating criminals like criminals, maybe they will stop commiting the crimes and returning to the prison system...

...and I'm sure they miss you. When are you going back?

These people are NOT in prison for being illegal immigrants. The are criminals convicted of crimes. Mostly, serious felonies. If they are merely illegal immigrants, they are sent straight back to their home countries. Take a look at the kind of ugly things these men have done before you feel too sorry for them.

You go Joe! Criminal aliens are just that, criminals and illegal aliens. If they don't like it maybe they won't come back.

I think Joe needs to take this show on the road...say to Washington DC for all the Libs to get in a lather about...what a great way to make a point. Keep it up Joe and don't let the whiners stop you!

I don't think Americans are anti-immigration but anti-illegal immigration.
Posted by: Daisy15 at February 5, 2009 08:47 PM
Yes, Sheriff Joe may be a publisity hound. But coddeling these crimminals will not keep them in line. These guys are usually repete offenders. They have no reguard for our laws or our way of life. All they care about is themselves and that is that. So if you make them ashamed, maybe, just maybe they will think next time.

I lost my job in NYC as a house painter to an illegal immigrant who had five roommates and could survive on half the pay. He bragged how he was sending his money to Mexico where his wife was building a house.
Meanwhile I'm out of a job and I'm an American.

IT'S ALL GOOD BECAUSE MANY OF YOU ARE ALREADY CHAINED TO THE GANG OF EVIL, SICK MINDED AND SATAN WORSHIPING HERD. YOU THAT CLAIM THE 7/8/9TH COMMANDMENT, YOU MAKE GOD SICK. WHAT ABOUT THE REST INCLUDING THE 2 NEW COMMANDMENTS. FOR ALL OF YOU WHO PROFESS CHRISTIANITY, TUFF LUCK YOU WORSHIP AN IMMIGRANT WHO CAME TO THIS WORLD NOT BEING OF THIS WORLD. ENJOY YOU STUPID NATIONALISTIC MINDSETS...READ DANIEL CHAPTER 2. GOD'S EMPIRE IS THE ONLY ONE THAT WILL BE ETERNAL!

Its Interesting how so many liberal Americans don't understand what obeying the law means...
Posted by: Tim at February 6, 2009 12:55 PM
IT IS NOT OK FOR PEOPLE TO ENTER HERE ILEGALLY. BUT IT IS WORSE TO MISTREAT THE ALIENS AND HURT THE DIGNITY OF ANOTHER HUMAN. IMMIGRATION LAWS ARE OUTDATED, OBSOLETE AND NEED TO BE CHANGED. THESE LAWS ARE NOT A GOOD EXCUSE FOR HATRED AND ABUSE. THE IMMIGRANTS ARE NOT STEALING ANYTHING, THEY WANT A CHANCE IN LIFE. THEY RISK MUCH TO COME HERE ONLY TO FIND PUBLIC HUMILIATION LIKE THIS. THIS IS NAZISM. SOMEBODY NEEDS TO STOP THIS SHERIFF FROM THIS KIND OF BEHAVIOUR.IT IS INHUMAN AND UNGODLY. IT IS REPULSIVE. I SINCERELY HOPE THAT HIGHER AUTHORITIES INTERVENE. THE PEOPLE WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS KIND OF ABUSE TOO MUCH LONGER.

I agree with this comment:
"I watched this event from ten feet away. These inmates were moved maybe 100 yards from a building to the entrance of tent city. There were 50 heavily armed police officers, two police helicopters, and all of the requisite media circus lapping it up. The whole event was so anticlimactic because it was a non event. In any other state this would be standard day to day operations. Under Sheriff Joe, however, it is an opportunity to be on television. It was quality entertainment."
In addition, these guys are handcuffed and chained like any other criminal is. What's the difference? Also, they did not need buses to move these guys 100 yards. How idiotic would that be?
He has so many illegal aliens to deal with, that walking them 100 yards was much simplier.

Nothing else seems to deter these pieces of crap from living in damned near a jungle and thinking the rest of us are here to abuse as they see fit.
The old stocks and pillories permitting scofflaws to be the targets for tomotoes, sticks, garbage, etc., were effective; more so than any punishment we have now. You know what? No one viewed those as "cruel", only incredibly embarrassing.

"THE IMMIGRANTS ARE NOT STEALING ANYTHING,"
Posted by: Wil
You're right. The Immigrants aren't stealing anything. In case you missed the point of the article, Wil, these are ILLEGAL immigrants who committed crimes in America, which included stealing, as well as rape and murder. Get it? See the caption under the picture? It says "Illegal" Immigrants"...that's the issue here. Um, shouldn't you be helping mommy with the chores today?

Rights? Treating them inhumanly? I'm sorry but once you break the law and get sent to any State or County Prison you shouldn't have any rights. No TV, no cigarettes, no work out equipment and yes they should be in black and white striped outfits so everyone who sees them will know that they are a prisoner. And they should be paraded around in chains and made to work in chain gangs to help clean up the city's around there prison. Any city that has a prison in it should get free labor from the prison to paint curbs, pick up trash or dig ditches. You want rights, don't break the law or enter our country illegally. I think any illegal alien caught in our country should be sent to one of these chain gangs for two years before they are deported. And if they get caught a second time, make it four years and so on. My grandparents came to this country from Europe and they did it legally why can't they?
