Some of the
rules established by the
International Whaling Commission:
___
COMMERCIAL WHALING:
The IWC approved a ban on commercial whaling in 1982, and the prohibition took effect in 1986. The moratorium, however, applies mainly to the larger species. Most smaller whales such as those hunted coastally in
Japan are not regulated.
___
SCIENTIFIC PERMITS:
Under IWC rules, fleets of member states may capture protected whales for scientific research. Japan has issued permits to
take about 1,070 minke whales, 50 fin whales, 50 humpbacks, 100 sei whales, 50 Bryde's whales, and 10 sperm whales a
year.
___
COASTAL COMMERCIAL WHALING:
Japan's coastal whalers catch Baird's beaked whales, pilot whales and Risso
dolphins a
total of 158 animals are projected for this year. These species are not regulated under IWC rules, and quotas are set by the
Japanese government.
___
MINKE WHALES:
Japan hunts minke whales including 120 caught coastally under its scientific program, but the species is off-limits to commercial hunts. Japan in recent
years has argued unsuccessfully for IWC approval to take 150 minkes in coastal commercial hunts.
___
DOLPHINS:
Japanese fishermen will hunt some 14,000 dolphins this year off the coasts of the country. The hunt is not regulated by the IWC, and the Japanese government sets the quotas.
