A Manassas Park woman is recovering from injuries after she says she was beaten by a police officer because she's Hispanic and doesn't speak English.
Agueda Dominguez says she was pulled over by a Manassas Park officer Monday, not knowing one of her headlights was burned out. The officer asked for her driver's license, but Dominguez realized she had left it at home.
She says she refused to sign a citation that she couldn't read, prompting the officer to order her out of the car. Dominguez says she was sprayed in the face with a chemical and thrown against the car and to the ground.
Police Maj. Mark Mathews says both Dominguez and the officer were injured.
The incident comes amid tensions between police and Hispanic immigrants as law enforcement agencies in the Prince William County area take on a role in federal immigration enforcement.
