Man, 85, who tried to kill ill wife gets probation | |||||||||||||||||||
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) -- An 85-year-old California man has been sentenced to probation for trying to kill his wife and himself after her dementia advanced. James Wheeler of Carpinteria also must perform 100 hours of community service after pleading no contest to attempted murder. Judge George Eskin said at Thursday's sentencing that the seven days Wheeler spent in jail was enough. Wheeler's plan of extending a hose from his car's exhaust pipe into their home in September was interrupted by a neighbor who called police. Betty Wheeler died Nov. 12 of an unspecified cause. Wheeler eulogized his wife of 64 years in a memorial service. © 2009 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
