These photos have been taken within the past five years in China, according to the Laogai Research Foundation, which provided the images to ABC News.

Harry Wu established the Laogai Research Foundation in 1992 to gather information and spread public awareness on the Chinese Laogai, or prison system. The foundation publishes an annual Laogai Handbook, newsletters and special investigative reports. Wu has a network of investigators in China who take photographs and report back to the the organization's Washington, D.C., headquarters.
