Human Bodies on Display: Where Do They Come From?

While many of the bodies are posed in very active positions, it's not just about bones and muscles. A human dissector, left, works on the insides of a body sliced in half to better show its inner workings of tissues and organs.

"Plastination makes it possible to preserve individual tissues and organs that have been removed from the body of the deceased," according to von Hagens' Web site. "In order to make a specimen permanent, decomposition must be halted."
