Denkaosan gets another title shot

KITTIPONG THONGSOMBAT

Lady Luck smiles on Denkaosan Kaovichit who is likely to challenge WBA flyweight champion Takefumi Sakata in a mandatory fight in Japan.

The 32-year-old Thai has won the right to meet the Japanese on December 31 after Koki Kameda, the top-ranked contender, refused to take on his compatriot who is from the same camp, Kyoei Gym.

"The WBA has informed us about it and we will sign a contract soon. We are finalising details," said Denkaosan's manager Narit Singwangcha.

It would be the Thai's second meeting with the 28-year-old Sakata after a controversial draw in a championship bout last November.

"We would have won had Denkaosan not been deducted a point in the final round," Narit said.

Denkaosan was deducted a point by American referee Mark Nelson with just 30 seconds to go in the final round.

It could be third time lucky for the Surat Thani native who was knocked out by Puerto Rico's Eric Morel in a championship fight in the United States in 2002.

Narit said he had approached former world champion Khaosai Galaxy to train Denkaosan (48-1-1, 18KOs) who will have a warm-up fight on October 17.

As for Sakata (33-4-2, 15KOs), it would be his fifth title defence after winning the crown from Lorenzo Parra last March.
